Guest guest
google owns youtube now actually, I didn't even realize there was still google video around, that is probably from when they were separate sites, thanks for sharing that, I can imagine this happens alot, it reminds me of pre 1896 Freud where he believed his patients stories about being sexually abused and his clients were the upper class, very well to do and socially connected folks in society, and they were implicating their parents, who were paying him, in some horrific behaviors including all kind of child abuse. that's when he switched his story around and suddenly said his patients were relating fantasy due to the electra complex and oedipus complex, which were his fantasy, but became some of his most famous theories post 1897, so that he was able to keep his career afloat and not get run out of town on a rail. the stuff in the video probably happens a whole lot more than people think. it's sickening. > > > > > > Here is a PBS documentary about the bewildering, unreal situation in which the children of very high-functioning but abusive, mentally ill fathers *are not believed* by the court when they finally disclose the emotional, physical and sexual abuse they've endured. > > > > > > The documentary includes a lot of interviews with teenaged children who have been forced to live with or spend time with fathers who continue to sexually exploit or physically batter them after a divorce! Some kids are permanently separated from the non-abusive parent and virtually isolated with the parent who molests and beats them. > > > > > > Its just incomprehensible to me, but it apparently happens often enough that a documentary could be made about it. > > > > > > Warning, this documentary is highly triggering. Guest guest
Yes, I think your analogy is very apt. I myself remember being quite surprised when I first read about that little nugget of information about the history of psychiatry! I was amazed to learn that Freud's original theory was that neurosis and hysteria and other psychological injuries in his patients were often being caused by the patient repressing his or her childhood memories of sexual and physical and emotional abuse *by their own parents*! The guy was brilliant: he hit the ball out of the park on the first swing! But as you pointed out the truth was just too shocking and dangerous for the wealthy, cultured n society he lived in and who supported his work. Outing his own patrons for shocking abuse of their children would indeed have gotten him professionally " lynched " so to speak. So instead of bravely sticking with the truth he was uncovering, he switched his theory to blame the child(ren) for having sexual fantasies about their parents (ie, the Oedipus and Electra complexes.) Truly that was a mind-blowing revelation about Freud's ethics, for me. -Annie > > > > > > > > Here is a PBS documentary about the bewildering, unreal situation in which the children of very high-functioning but abusive, mentally ill fathers *are not believed* by the court when they finally disclose the emotional, physical and sexual abuse they've endured. > > > > > > > > The documentary includes a lot of interviews with teenaged children who have been forced to live with or spend time with fathers who continue to sexually exploit or physically batter them after a divorce!
