Guest guest
Harry, good to hear from you! This is a real puzzle to me! All along we get told that a lower A1C is better, and now you are being told that a higher is better! This is a real head scratcher to me! I am going to stick to believing in Santa Clause! Smile! A1C Today I made another visit to my indocrinologist, Dr. Welch, who was alarmed at my reading of the A1C taken today, which was 5.8. She expected it to be much higher. I remember on my first visit to her when my A1C was 5.7 she stated she would be quite pleased if it was 6.5 or higher near 7.0 or even a little higher. On the other hand I was quite pleased with the 5.8 reading, and I still wonder why she was so distressed, since it seemed to me to be quite good. She just said I needed to run a higher A1C due to my medical problems. I thought running high A1C's and glr's was the root cause of things like heart trouble, kidney problems and such. She was so alarmed she immediately placed me on a CGM continuous glucose monitor, and gave me a loan of a one touch glucose monitor to keep track of my glr and foods and liquids I consume daily for a week. Maybe she can explain why to me next visit. Apparently, she does not trust the readings of my prodigy audio code monitor, which is incompatible with the software on her computer. Any how this one touch monitor is supposed to be compatible with the readings on the CGM and the software on her computer system. I will let you know what the results are next week, when she will have some readings she can trust. Guest guest
Is this One Touch meter a fully audible meter, Harry? Or are they assuming you, as a blind person, don't check your blood sugars anyway and no doubt have someone sighted help you all the time? Guest guest
Someone offered as a reason a doc wants a higher a1c: " I wonder if this is because of the studies in recent years that showed that tight glucose control raised mortality rates among Type 2s with heart problems. Might be worth looking up, although I think I also read that the research methodologies might have been flawed. " At first one of the ideas was that previous heart problems were higher and among those they would have problems anyway. Then additional stat analysis showed that those with the problems even though they were in the lower a1c arm did not in fact do those things to lower it. So there rate of the problems were similar to those in the regular care arm anyway. Being put in the lower a1c arm had no benefit if they did not make the effort to lower it. I think the more usual reason for some docs to suggest a higher a1c is fear of lows with insulin use. But one can imagine that more carbs to raise a1c means more insulin and the greater chance of the roller coaster effect. This is where large amounts of insulin is chasing large amounts of carbs with higher chance of a low when the insulin kicks in. Which means more glucose etc. and the effect feeds on itself. With the roler coaster one can have a good a1c. An average with swings of 90 and 110 is the same as for an 60 and a 140. I think this list is where someone told about having a good a1c but with this effect it was the high on the swings that caused the subsequent complications over time.
