Guest guest
wow. i really hope your onto something. we have tried every treatment under the sun too, and finally we think that the clostridia-that she tests possitive for- was causing all of the bad reactions that she has had. I'm wondering if my child was misdiagnosed with autism but really having the condition called Maple syrup urine disorder. He always smells like maple syrup, Sweat, breath, urine. He always smells sweet like that. People with MSUD can't metabolize leucine, and my sons amino acid test came back with having problem with leucine. If you have a variant of MSUD (there are different severeties) and it goes untreated it can cause brain damage.!! It may explain why nothing ever worked for him.....and we tried every autism treatment under the sun.. Thoughts???? Anyone else's child smell like this???? Guest guest
Yes! My little guy! (nt with some sensory issues). I always thought it was because he ate pancakes. constantly...and he's a slob...lol. My pdd son for the longest time would not stand too close to him and refused to sit next to him at meal time because of "that smell". It's very faint. Like, you can't smell him coming into the room but if he sits on your lap and gets very close, you can smell a faint, sweet aroma. It has gotten better...his brother is more sensitive to the smell than anyone else in the house and he doesn't complain about it as much as he used to. But I know EXACTLY what you mean. And I've never heard of this, so now I'm off to google! I'm curious to know if this could be part of the cause of his sensory issues. Guest guest
wow. There's really not a whole lot of info on MSUD out there. Just hundreds of links with the same exact info. I don't think this is my son's issue (though when he sees the dan in the spring, I don't think it would hurt to check). This is pretty serious stuff...Lord knows you're about to become very skilled in diet control....please keep us posted. -Tammy To: mb12 valtrex Sent: Sat, February 12, 2011 2:58:29 PMSubject: Re: MSUD instead of autism.? Guest guest
Symptoms of parasites include constipation diarrhea gas and bloating irritable bowel syndrome joint and muscle aches and pains anemia allergies skin conditions nervousness sleep disturbances teeth grinding chronic fatigue abdominal pain Herb Classifications To understand how herbal medicines work against parasites, you may want to have some knowledge of herbs and their classifications. Herbs can be placed into three general classifications according to the primary reactions they produce in the body. These three classifications are detoxification, symptom relief, and building and toning. Each classification is further broken down into subcategories that define specific properties. For example, in the detoxification classification, there is an alternative subcategory. Alternative herbs are those that purify the blood. Hepatics is another subcategory, which includes herbs that affect the liver. Will I experience any side effects or detoxification symptoms? Most people look for parasites in their stools, and many do see them. Not everyone does, however, Positive signs are a " pokey " feeling in the abdomen or an " itchy " or " crawly " sensation on the skin. You should remember that in the process of cleansing, there may be some discomfort; parasites are not easily dislodged. Some users' skin has broken out, and others feel nausea or somewhat tired. You may also notice increased bowel movements, looser stools, and more frequent urination. Jos-hua, Medicine Man notes that usually we can also experience excess gas (flatulence) which has a sulfur smell to it. These are the dead parasites building up in the colon, waiting to be eliminated and flushed out of your body through home colonics. Also, Jos-hua notes that certain area's of the skin seem to eliminate oils and smells during a parasite cleanse. In his personal case, the skin on his chest, around and below the thyroid gland emanates a peculiar smell when parasite cleansing. If I have been taking a herbal colon cleansing supplement, do I need to do parasite cleansing?Colon cleansing does have a cleansing effect, and it is a necessary prerequisite against a wide range of parasites. What you will enjoy is better results in your parasite cleansing efforts, quicker and longer lasting results. A clean colon, bloodstream, lymph and liver will help in assisting in the elimination of parasites from the body; that's why it is so important to start parasite cleansing only once the preliminary measures are taken (i.e., a good overall system cleanse or two), otherwise parasite cleansing can become a waste of your time and money. What else can I do to help the cleansing?Beyond herbal parasite cleansing there are other alternative parasite cleansing therapies that HPS encourages. Find out which ones for adults, which ones for kids in our HPS 7 Day Wonder Cleanse, Level 2 and Level 3 programs. That's where we take care of the parasites for good. They'll have no choice but to pack their bags and head south for a vacation! Is there anyone who should not parasite cleanse?Pregnant or lactating women should not be parasite cleansing. I found stuff online that said fenugreek can make you smell like maple syrup, but nothing on milk thistle! Add To Favorites! Reply FCK TinyMCE elsielou Notifications AgreeDisagree Re: Sweet Smell? by prettysoulful 5 year 364 elsielou,Have you been tested for diabetes? Sweet urine is also associated with ketones in the urine from diabetes out of control. Not to be an alarmist, but it could be possible that the smell and the milk thistle just happened to come around the same time. Milk thistle, however does have an effect on the pancreas, which for most is suppose to be positive, but if a person has undiagnosed diabetes, then they should only use milk thistle under medical supervision, so I'm not sure what effect it could have on the overall condition. I'd suggest you either go immediately to your doctor for testing, or discontinue the milk thistle and observe your urine and body odor. Add To Favorites! Guest guest
Disorders That Cause a Sweet Smell on the Body By Corinna Underwood, eHow Contributor Disorders that Cause a Sweet Smell There are a number of metabolic disorders that may cause a fruity smell on the breath, a sweet smell on the skin or a sweet smell in the urine. These disorders are treatable, though some may be signs of deeper underlying problems. Maple Syrup Urine Disease Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is a metabolic disorder that is genetically inherited. It causes an inability for the body to break down the amino acids valine, leucine and isoleucine. This causes a build-up of harmful levels of these substances in the blood. Symptoms include loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, urine that smells like maple syrup, seizures and coma. Treatment involves a diet free of protein, intravenous intake of sugars, fats and fluids. Hemodialysis may also be used as a means of reducing the level of amino acids. Lactic Acidosis Lactic acidosis is cause when the level of lactic acid in the blood stream increases faster than it can be removed. Symptoms include nausea and weakness and a sweet, fruity smell on the breath or skin. Treatment is focused on amending the underlying causes of the disorder. Blood tests are necessary to check electrolyte levels. The most common cause of lactic acidosis is intense and prolonged exercise, this is due to the fact that lactic acid levels increase as oxygen levels decrease. It may also be caused by AIDS, cancer, respiratory failure, kidney failure and sepsis. Diabetic Ketoacidosis Diabetic ketoacidosis is a complication of diabetes. It occurs when there is insufficient sugar in the body to be used as a source of fuel and fat is used instead. Ketones--byproducts of the breakdown of fat--begin to build-up in the body with negative effects. Symptoms include weakness, frequent thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, loss of breath, nausea, vomiting and a sweet or fruity smell on the breath or skin. Treatment involves increasing the dosage of insulin and replacing lost fluids. Simple Dementia Testswww.sHopkinsHealthAlerts.com Free s Hopkins Dementia Guide. Guest guest
Hello there, Kate, Yes, this is, I believe, the underlying reason. I believe it is parasites that cause the adrenal glands to be over stimulated with their by-product: ammonia, and that leads to constant movement, making a chemical build-up which expels from the body at a slower rate, leading to this sweet smell. My son has this sweet smell at times also.

Guest guest
Thanks !!! Would this still hold true to being a possibility if on his oat test he came up with very low ammonia?? Guest guest
Kate, As far as I can see, the organic acid test is only based on an average discards through the urine. The blood is what would need to be tested for a more accurate report- and the accuracy is still debatable. Ammonia Also known as: Plasma Ammonia; NH3 Formal name: Ammonia Related tests: Liver panel At a Glance Test Sample The Test Common Questions Ask Us Links The Test How is it used? When is it ordered? What does the test result mean? Is there anything else I should know? How is it used? The ammonia test is primarily used to help investigate the cause of changes in behavior and consciousness. It may be ordered, along with other tests such as glucose, electrolytes, and kidney and liver function tests, to help diagnose the cause of a coma of unknown origin or to help support the diagnosis of Reye's syndrome or hepatic encephalopathy caused by various liver diseases. An ammonia level may also be ordered to help detect and evaluate the severity of a urea cycle defect. Some doctors use the ammonia test to monitor the effectiveness of treatment of hepatic encephalopathy, but there is not widespread agreement on its clinical utility. Since hepatic encephalopathy can be caused by the build-up of a variety of toxins in the blood and brain, blood ammonia levels correlate poorly with the degree of impairment. ^ Back to top When is it ordered? An ammonia test may be ordered on a newborn when symptoms such as irritability, vomiting, lethargy, and seizures arise in the first few days after birth. It may be performed when a child develops these symptoms about a week following a viral illness, such as influenza or a cold, when the doctor suspects that the child may have Reye's syndrome. When adults experience mental changes, disorientation, sleepiness, or lapse into a coma, an ammonia level may be ordered to help evaluate the cause of the change in consciousness. In patients with stable liver disease, an ammonia level may be ordered, along with other liver function tests, when a patient suddenly " takes a turn for the worse " and becomes more acutely ill. ^ Back to top What does the test result mean? Significantly increased concentrations of ammonia in the blood indicate that the body is not effectively metabolizing and eliminating ammonia but do not indicate the cause. In infants, extremely high levels are associated with an inherited urea cycle enzyme deficiency or defect but may also be seen with hemolytic disease of the newborn. Moderate short-lived increases in ammonia are relatively common in newborns, where the levels may rise and fall without causing detectible symptoms. Increased ammonia levels and decreased glucose levels may indicate the presence of Reye's syndrome in symptomatic children and adolescents. Increased concentrations may also indicate a previously undiagnosed enzymatic defect of the urea cycle. In children and adults, elevated ammonia levels may also indicate liver or kidney damage. Frequently, an acute or chronic illness will act as a trigger, increasing ammonia levels to the point that an affected patient has difficulty clearing them. Normal concentrations of ammonia do not rule out hepatic encephalopathy. Other wastes can contribute to changes in mental function and consciousness, and brain levels of ammonia may be much higher than blood levels. This can make correlation of patient symptoms to ammonia blood levels difficult. ^ Back
