wow. i really hope your onto something. we have tried every treatment under the sun too, and finally we think that the clostridia-that she tests possitive for- was causing all of the bad reactions that she has had.

I'm wondering if my child was misdiagnosed with autism but really having the condition called Maple syrup urine disorder. He always smells like maple syrup, Sweat, breath, urine. He always smells sweet like that. People with MSUD can't metabolize leucine, and my sons amino acid test came back with having problem with leucine. If you have a variant of MSUD (there are different severeties) and it goes untreated it can cause brain damage.!! It may explain why nothing ever worked for him.....and we tried every autism treatment under the sun..

Thoughts???? Anyone else's child smell like this????

Yes! My little guy! (nt with some sensory issues). I always thought it was because he ate pancakes. constantly...and he's a slob...lol. My pdd son for the longest time would not stand too close to him and refused to sit next to him at meal time because of "that smell". It's very faint. Like, you can't smell him coming into the room but if he sits on your lap and gets very close, you can smell a faint, sweet aroma. It has gotten better...his brother is more sensitive to the smell than anyone else in the house and he doesn't complain about it as much as he used to. But I know EXACTLY what you mean. And I've never heard of this, so now I'm off to google! I'm curious to know if this could be part of the cause of his

sensory issues. Man oh man, you never know what you're gonna find around here!

wow. There's really not a whole lot of info on MSUD out there. Just hundreds of links with the same exact info. I don't think this is my son's issue (though when he sees the dan in the spring, I don't think it would hurt to check). This is pretty serious stuff...Lord knows you're about to become very skilled in diet control....please keep us posted.

Hi,Since I started on the diet and the OXY-OXC, I smell sickly sweet all the time! Even my urine - almost like a candy floss smell! Anyone else experienced this? Add To Favorites!

No, only Milk Thistle. I found stuff online that said fenugreek can make you smell like maple syrup, but nothing on milk thistle! Add To Favorites!

elsielou,Have you been tested for diabetes? Sweet urine is also associated with ketones in the urine from diabetes out of control. Not to be an alarmist, but it could be possible that the smell and the milk thistle just happened to come around the same time. Milk thistle, however does have an effect on the pancreas, which for most is suppose to be positive, but if a person has undiagnosed diabetes, then they should only use milk thistle under medical supervision, so I'm not sure what effect it could have on the overall condition.

I'd suggest you either go immediately to your doctor for testing, or discontinue the milk thistle and observe your urine and body odor. Add To Favorites!

Lactic Acidosis

Lactic acidosis is cause when the level of lactic acid in the blood stream increases faster than it can be removed. Symptoms include nausea and weakness and a sweet, fruity smell on the breath or skin. Treatment is focused on amending the underlying causes of the disorder. Blood tests are necessary to check electrolyte levels. The most common cause of lactic acidosis is intense and prolonged exercise, this is due to the fact that lactic acid levels increase as oxygen levels decrease. It may also be caused by AIDS, cancer, respiratory failure, kidney failure and sepsis.

Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a complication of diabetes. It occurs when there is insufficient sugar in the body to be used as a source of fuel and fat is used instead. Ketones--byproducts of the breakdown of fat--begin to build-up in the body with negative effects. Symptoms include weakness, frequent thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, loss of breath, nausea, vomiting and a sweet or fruity smell on the breath or skin. We have been thinking of doing a parasite

cleans using natural herbs. Can we use parasite cleanings at the same time as

doing Valtrex, Fluzol and Flagyl. Would this be too much on the liver, kidneys

or body? I have been told my son has a parasite problem. Any insight would be

appreciated.

          Yes, this is, I believe, the underlying reason. I believe it is parasites

   that cause the adrenal glands to be over stimulated with their by-product:

    ammonia, and that leads to constant movement, making a chemical build-up

which expels from the body at a slower rate, leading to this sweet smell.

           My son has this sweet smell at times also.

       As far as I can see, the organic acid test is only based on an average

      discards through the urine. The blood is what would need to

          be tested for a more accurate report- and the accuracy

           is still debatable.                      Ammonia

How is it used?

The ammonia test is primarily used to help investigate the cause of changes in behavior and consciousness. It may be ordered, along with other tests such as glucose, electrolytes, and kidney and liver function tests, to help diagnose the cause of a coma of unknown origin or to help support the diagnosis of Reye's syndrome or hepatic encephalopathy caused by various liver diseases. An ammonia level may also be ordered to help detect and evaluate the severity of a urea cycle defect. Some doctors use the ammonia test to monitor the effectiveness of treatment of hepatic encephalopathy, but there is not widespread agreement on its clinical utility. Since hepatic encephalopathy can be caused by the build-up of a variety of toxins in the blood and brain, blood ammonia levels correlate poorly with the degree of impairment.

When is it ordered?

An ammonia test may be ordered on a newborn when symptoms such as irritability, vomiting, lethargy, and seizures arise in the first few days after birth. It may be performed when a child develops these symptoms about a week following a viral illness, such as influenza or a cold, when the doctor suspects that the child may have Reye's syndrome. When adults experience mental changes, disorientation, sleepiness, or lapse into a coma, an ammonia level may be ordered to help evaluate the cause of the change in consciousness. In patients with stable liver disease, an ammonia level may be ordered, along with other liver function tests, when a patient suddenly " takes a turn for the worse " and becomes more acutely ill.

What does the test result mean?

Significantly increased concentrations of ammonia in the blood indicate that the body is not effectively metabolizing and eliminating ammonia but do not indicate the cause. In infants, extremely high levels are associated with an inherited urea cycle enzyme deficiency or defect but may also be seen with hemolytic disease of the newborn. Moderate short-lived increases in ammonia are relatively common in newborns, where the levels may rise and fall without causing detectible symptoms. Increased ammonia levels and decreased glucose levels may indicate the presence of Reye's syndrome in symptomatic children and adolescents. Increased concentrations may also indicate a previously undiagnosed enzymatic defect of the urea cycle. In children and adults, elevated ammonia levels may also indicate liver or kidney damage. Frequently, an acute or chronic illness will act as a trigger, increasing ammonia levels to the point that an affected patient has difficulty clearing them.

Normal concentrations of ammonia do not rule out hepatic encephalopathy. Other wastes can contribute to changes in mental function and consciousness, and brain levels of ammonia may be much higher than blood levels. This can make correlation of patient symptoms to ammonia blood levels difficult.
