Guest guest
So what did people think of the show? Generally, I'm an Oprah fan, but I do have to say that I felt like she was taking over from Geneen. There was one question from the audience early in the show where Geneen didn't answer at all. Only Oprah did! I did wish she'd let the expert be the expert and not make herself the center of the show. Those gripes aside, though, I thought it was good. A lot of the answers were straight out of the book (maybe all of them, I don't know yet since I haven't finished it), which is to be expected, I suppose. But all in all, I could really relate to almost all the questions and the responses were interesting. I'm definitely saving this on my TiVo so I can return to it again some time in the future. Guest guest
I agree with you, Josie, about Oprah. I was actually very dissapointed in the show because of how much Oprah talked, especially about herself. I felt like Oprah was somewhat disrespectful to Geneen for not allowing her to be the expert, as you say. They could have easily aired several more questions if this were not the case. I felt the same way when Geneen was on a few months ago, and my susupicion is that Monday's show was actually taped a few months ago at the same time as the first one, but just aired at a different time. I thought Oprah was a little over the top with some of her comments . . . not a keeper for me. Guest guest
Yeah, I also thought that there weren't enough answered questions... It seemed that they just got through a few, and it was so sparse. That said, better than some fluffy show about a celebrity!
Guest guest
Sorry to be jumping in on this late; the last few days were killers for me. Ok, so this is really obsessive behavior (I'm not counting points or calories, so this behavior needs *some* outlet!), but on the second time I watched the show (I'd taped it), I used a stopwatch and the "pause" to time when Geneen spoke and when Oprah spoke. I didn't count Oprah times when she was acting as host only--introducing the taped segments or reading quotes from Geneen's books or asking questions. I only counted when she was talking about the book or her own experiences. Results? Geneen spoke 10.3 minutes, and Oprah spoke 13.8 minutes. That included 1.5 minutes at the end that could be called Oprah's wrap-up as host. The only time I thought she was out of line was when she took over answering the question of the African American woman who was the last to ask a question. And at that time, Oprah took a full 2.5 minutes, and got a little preachy, in my opinion. I did notice that Geneen works really hard never to be preachy. Her long experience with retreats has served her well in question-answer sessions. I feel it was a very good show, with a nice balance of taped segments and live questions from the audience. Oprah spoke a lot, yes, but I'm not sure even Geneen would want people to think of her (Geneen) as the expert. She wants each of us to be the expert on our own bodies. I looked at her reactions to Oprah speaking, and she was smiling broadly, and I didn't detect frustration. There were two times when I think she wanted to say something but didn't get it in, but that happened to Oprah, too. I also noticed that plenty of women in the audience had tears glistening in their eyes, so obviously they were moved by what was going on. I was, too. I admire Oprah for devoting two whole shows to this important issue, and for being willing over and over again, under massive public scrutiny, to put her private struggle out in the open, to say that things she tried so hard in the past just didn't work.
