Guest guest
I'm now half-way through this book, and while I'm finding the message much more resounding and moving than when I first tried to read it (I don't think I was quite ready to accept it then), now I'm frustrated. I feel like this book is repeating variations on the same message, and really good have boiled it down to an article instead. I really do agree that besides the message, I haven't found a practical take-away yet. Is there one? I want to try and finish it but think I'm ready to give it up again. > > I just started reading this book: http://www.amazon.com/Women-Food-God-Unexpected-Everything/dp/1416543074/ref=cm_\ cr_pr_product_top > > Actually, I tried to read it a few months ago and appreciated its message but only got about half-way through b/c I didn't think it was going to get me anywhere. Now I think I just wasn't invested in it or ready to hear what it was really trying to tell me, so I'rm trying to read it again. > > Has anyone else read it? Wanted to read it? Guest guest
Don't give up and do read through. Also you will find at the end of the book the epilogue, and appendix A and B. But not as a substitute for the whole book. A long time ago I found what was called the Joy Diet, yes I said the D word, but this is different although incomplete. I have it posted on my refrigerator. " Eat only what you really enjoy. Really enjoy everything you eat. Stop immediately when you are full. " I can think of one thing missing and that is " Eat only when you are hungry. " I also have a copy of the Eating Guidelines, but I don't know where I found this. 1. Eat when you are hungry 2. Eat sitting down in a calm environment(this does not include the car). 3. Eat without distractions(radio,tv, newspapers, books, intense conversations, or music 4. Eat what your body wants. 5. Eat until you are satisfied. 6. Eat(with the intention of being) in full view of others. 7. Eat with enjoyment, gusto and pleasure, As I was writing this 2 things struck me that I hadn't really noticed before. To eat what my BODY wants....not necessarily my cravings or my mind thinks it wants. And eat until you are SATISFIED. Being full and being satisfied are not quite the same thing. Hope some of this helps. It has helped me just writing it. Hang in there. This is a journey with ups and downs and detours and all of it. Let us know how it is going. Guest guest
Tried to send you a response and it got all mixed up. I don't know why and the fix didn't work either. Hope you can read it or fix it at your end and make a copy of the guidelines. Again, I hope you look at the end of the book for a summary but do read the rest. Guest guest
I finished it last night (but I definitely skimmed a lot of it at the end), and did find the second half much more practical. I thought her personality types of " restrictor " and " permitter " were interesting, but much to high-level--working sort of like a horoscope where of course they make sense and apply to you, but that's really b/c they're so generic. So I much prefer IE's eating types to this. However, I really appreciated the methods she laid out for dealing with your " voice " and for meditating to reconnect with your body. With her method, which I tried for 10 minutes this morning, you focus on the sensations in your belly, the idea being that the belly is the center for many physical and emotional feelings in the body. This is supposed to help you learn to connect with your body and understand your physical sensations, and also how your emotions manifest themselves in your body, on a daily basis. Really, to help take you outside of your head, which is something I can really appreciate. Then, if you every lose focus of reflecting on your body and belly, you just breathe in and bout and count to 7 on each out breath to re-focus yourself. I can really see how this would be useful and found my time trying it this morning very interesting. And I also appreciate how it seems to be a more accessibly method of meditation. Have you tried this Abby? I read it and TOTALLY LOVED it. i would be up for discussing it! abbyIE since 11/08 I just started reading this book: http://www.amazon.com/Women-Food-God-Unexpected-Everything/dp/1416543074/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top Actually, I tried to read it a few months ago and appreciated its message but only got about half-way through b/c I didn't think it was going to get me anywhere. Guest guest
Thanks. How did you do that? I'm not great at " specialized " email. Not high on my priority list because I hardly ever need it. Guest guest
Hi, I read this book recently too. The first time I picked it up, I didn't like it and didn't get very far. A few weeks later I decided to give it another try, and loved it! It's what brought me looking for support boards like this one. I don't know that any of the points she makes are necessarily new to me, but they were timely reminders and somehow said in a way that really spoke to me. My biggest takeaways were: 1) how important it is for me to remember over and over again that I want my choices to be out of love for my self, my body 2) that eating whatever I want does NOT mean eating whenever I want or whatever I crave. It means eating when I am PHYSICALLY hungry (everyone learns their own signals, mine is my stomach starting to rumble) and eating what my body wants. 3) when I AM physically hungry, to pause and ask myself what my body wants 4)importance of some sort of mindfulness practice such as meditation because that's the tool that will help when I'm EMOTIONALLY hungry, for me to be able to choose not to act on that feeling but to be able to sit with it instead The two parts I have most trouble with are stopping when I'm satisfied and eating without distractions.
