Hi ,

Welcome to the group.

I just became type 2 in September of this year.

Becky

Hello, I'm a new member

Hello,

My name is Childs. I have Type 1 diabetes and I am totally blind.

I have been diabetic since October 1979. I had a kidney transplant and a

pancreas transplant, the kidney in 1995 and the pancreas in 1996. My kidney

is still going strong, but the pancreas stopped working in 2000.

I am glad to be a member of this group and look forward to a lot of

great information.

Greetings again, Alan!

I'm 56, and have been type 1 (insulin dependent) since age 11 in 1967.

Pat will chime in no doubt, and as far as I know, she's the reigning queen of

type 1's on the list, as she is a tid bit older than me and has been type 1

since she was less than 2 years old if memory serves!

Again, welcome!

Dave

Hi Dave,

Since age eleven, I'll bet you have seen a lot of changes in medications

along with other things. I was nineteen when I was diagnosed. I lost my

vision at age thirty-four.

Thanks again,

Hi ,

Thank you for the welcome. I have always been curious about how an

insulin pump works and how they have it hooked up. Does it keep your blood

sugars well controlled? Thank you for the welcome and I am glad to meet

you.

Welcome to the list. I'm 29 (turning 30 in two months, yikes!) and have

had Type 1 for 20 years, since age 9 (in 1991).

I live in BC, Canada and use an insulin pump to manage my diabetes.

Hope you enjoy the list!

Hi Sugar,

Thank you. Well, no problems with the kidney, but my pancreas quit

after four years and I went right back on insulin. It's nice meeting you.

I lost my sight at age 33. I read one time how most people have a re-growth of

retina tissue and/or the capillaries in their early 30s. With a diabetic who

hasn't had good control, these new capillaries are brittle and burst, causing

hemorrhaging and other problems. This is diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic Retinopathy is what caused my blindness. I was working as a

nursing assistant. One evening I was writing in a chart and while rubbing

my right eye, I looked back down at the chart and with my left eye, I was

seeing wavy lines on the chart. After visiting the eye doctor, I was sent

to a specialist for laser treatments. An eye surgeon fought for three years

to save my sight.

Very similar to my experience. I lost my sight in one eye a year before losing

it in the other. I had a total of 5 surgical procedures on my eyes, and I forget

how many laser treatments. It took a total of 2 years. This was in the late 80s,

when much of this was barely out of the infancy stage I think.
