Hi Welcome to the group!I'm afraid to say that I think giving up food groups is a bit at odds with IE... you can't learn to trust yourself with all foods if you have forbidden certain ones.

But if you want, you can start with working on hunger and fullness cues, and then work up to adding those foods back to your " diet " a bit later on.But I have to tell you, with IE, I am focused on what I have GAINED, not what I have lost. I find this is a REALLY hard concept to wrap one's head around... the weight loss takes time, but the gains in your self image can be immediate.

All the best to you!AbbyPS My weight has been more or less stable since starting IE.... but the difference in how i see myself and the world is ENORMOUS.

Welcome glad to have you here. I too started out wanting to use IE as an 'alternative' to dieting, lose weight etc. What I found instead is that I have lost my diet mentality, desire to need to 'be' anything for anyone else, and a bunch of food 'rules' that frankly hadn't served me well before. I am not a poster child for 'health & fitness' by no means, but I do feel healthy and happy with my body and life. I hope you can also 'lose' what you need by being here too.

BEST to you, Katcha

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think I am going to do something for Lent that isn't at odds with my IE journey so far.

Abby, I love that idea. Imagine 40 days of something pleasurable and enjoyable? I agree that if you deny yourself the sugar and the flour, your cravings will only increase.

You could always give up saying negative things about yourself, especially with regards to weight, body size, etc. That could be harder to do than giving up sugar perhaps. I think it is between each individual and their belief system.

Isn't the whole point of Lent to give up something significant though?  It's supposed to be difficult, not something easy to give up, like a sacrafice, if I remember my catholic upbringing from 45 years ago. So while you're doing something new and pleasurable for yourself (wholeheartedly recommended :)) you also still have to choose something to give up for Lent though sugar, and other food items probably aren't the best choice while also trying to learn IE.

As I’m not religious, the only thing I’ve done that’s close to Lent is a 40 day yoga sadhana. Each day for 40 days (including weekends) I woke up at 5:45 to make it to a 6:30 am yoga class. It was tough, rewarding and something I will never forget.

Good answer. And there are a multitude of ways to do that.

The point of Lent is not to give up something you love for deprivation's sake. It's to detach yourself from your worldly pleasures for the purpose of deepening your spiritual contemplation. You can accomplish the same thing by, for example, committing yourself to a daily meditation during Lent. Or to anything else that takes you out of your ordinary routine and makes you more conscious of your relationship to God.
