Guest guest
You know, recently I was thinking about weight as it reflects health factors. And we hear so much that obesity is the "cause" of health problems like high triglycerides, blood pressure hdls and whatnot... then I read that when people get liposuction and remove fat or bring their waist inches down... it still does not lower any of those health markers!! That kind of blew me away. To me that means that there may not be a causal relationship between weight and these health markers... because now the weight is gone... why would there still be these issues? The only thing that does it is diet and exersize... a healthy lifestyle... with that sometimes comes weight loss but it would appear that weight is not a direct one to one factor. I'd like to suggest that some people who think about losing weight are doing so for health reasons and not out of dieting mentality always. I find when I think of my weight now it's the same type of thinking like I think of other health issues I need to address and find a working treatment plan for. Sometimes when I hear "Don't worry about your weight" or "You can't progress as long as you're thinking about your weight" it upsets me very much because my weight is very connected with my health problems and it has to be as much in the front of my mind as being aware of my diabetes is. Just as it would be absurd to not worry about and work to control my diabetes, for a lot of us, with health issues caused by our obesity, it is absurd to forget about working to control our obesity. For many of us in that category, we came to IE to find a reasonable and alternative answer to a medical issue, similar to how others may turn to accupuncture or medition for pain management. Just as we aren't supposed to speak of addictions on this list, I feel we should also develop a little sensitivity in responding to those who are worried about their weight gain, if not for any reason, then at least when they state they have health issues related to their obesity. Some of us will die if we "forget about our weight" and hearing that we'll never get any where in IE until we let it go just adds to the feelings of hopelessness we already feel much of the time which brought us to IE in the first place. At least it's what I'm hearing in private conversations, just sayin... Sunny Re: excited but really scared - help? Don't worry about the future. That is still a diet mentality. If you are thinking about your weight then you are thinking like a dieter. YOu really have to learn to lose all that before you can really do this right. BUT...that takes time and it is IS VERY scarey at times! That is totally normal. When I first started all I could think was, "Wow, I am soooo going to gain weight eatting all this stuff." And as far as not being able to stop...that is because you have dieted for soooooo long. Your body is still trying to get all it wants now because it is scared it won't get more later. Just remind yourself constantly that you can eat ANYTHING at ANY TIME. I know it feels like you can't stop at this point but I promise...as you lose that diet mentality....it does go away. If you don't worry about numbers at all you will start to eat what you body needs. Just listen to your hunger and don't worry about your weight. And YES...I did gain a little weight when I started. I could feel i t in my cloths. But, with time it will even out and you will be at a healthy weight for you. It may not be the 'goal weight' you had set when you were dieting but that dieting is done so forget that weight now. Guest guest
Well, that certainly is interesting. I'm a bit skeptical about those results though, but only because when I have lost weight in the past, on various diets, so the food choices were somewhat different from time to time, and yet I had to lower both my BP meds and my diabetic meds. My cholesterol has always been amazing, especially when given my degree of obesity, but I guess I just have lucky genes. So for me, losing weight has dropped the BP and diabetic markers. I can go with the "healthy lifestyle" some of the time but other times I am positive the diet I chose wasn't a particularly healthy choice if not downright dangerous. I know many patients (I am a retired nurse) who also had their BP and Diabetic meds dramatically reduced if not discontinued, when they lost weight but I can't attest to the food and behavior choices they made to lose the weight so I have to believe losing weight does make a difference in the health markers. I'm not sure how liposuction would be able to change the medical aspects anyway. I do know that they can't remove much fat at a time without causing a dangerous kind of shock to the body. That's why people can't just go in and have a bunch of fat removed through Lipo and get thin. It's only for removing a little bit from problem spots, reshaping the area, not reducing it by much and that may be why it doesn't change the markers? That makes sense to me. One thing I did find extremely interesting about lipo, that makes sense but I hadn't thought of it until told by a plastics guy, when they remove those fat cells, through lipo, surgery, whatever, those cells are gone forever and new ones will never replace them. Remaining fat cells can get bigger, and the fat has to go somewhere for storage, so you pay to get a flat tummy but your rump may suddenly get larger than it has been in the past, proportionately, but apparently you're born with a set number of the little suckers. Guest guest
sunny that is so true... when we diet we do not lose fat cells once grown... they are there like little dried up sponges just WAITING to be plumped back up... perhaps another reason why dieting is not effective in the long term..To: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Thu, April 7, 2011 5:24:25 PMSubject: Re: Re: excited but really scared - help? Guest guest
What a wonderful visual I just got by reading your description of dried up little sponges. It certainly does make it easier to see what happens when one stops dieting. Sunny Re: excited but really scared - help? Don't worry about the future. That is still a diet mentality. Guest guest
A thin person can be VERY unhealthy just as a big person can be VERY healthy. ALOT more has to do with the issues than just weight. I thank God for that because I will never be teeny tiny but I CAN be healthy! To: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Thu, April 7, 2011 4:36:22 PMSubject: Re: Re: excited but really scared - help? Guest guest
When you have liposuction to remove fat, only the visible fat goes. The fat around your heart, liver, and so forth still remains. Therefore, liposuction is to do with cosmetic surgery, i.e. nothing whatsoever to do with health. Similarly, as you say, it does not change your eating habits, thought processes or lifestyle. That is why liposuction will not improve your health. Paddy You know, recently I was thinking about weight as it reflects health factors.
