All of you on Prednisone...Please take my

experience as a lesson.

I did fall a few months ago with the vertigo...just bruised I thought!

After many months of lower left back pain I finally went to the

doctor...yep...cracked rib!!!

I have osteoporosis due to the Prednsone ( keep forgetting that for

some stupid reason)

Any fall...I repeat any fall ...could lead to a fracture for me!

I even fractured a pinky toe by doing nothing at all except stepping

on it !

So...please don't take falls lightly!!!You could have fractured

something!!!

Jane, I hope that you went to the doctor

right away...not like me ( 8 weeks later)

Take it easy and if you haven't been to the doctor and the pain does

not improve

over the week-end...get an Xray!!!! Yes..I'm nagging!!!!

Today, I walked into

the kitchen and was trying to straighten a throw rug with my toe

(didn't want to bend my bad back). I was doing this with my good leg,

then my bad leg (knee) just gave out.....and down I went. Fell onto my

butt and back. I just laid there, knowing I had broken something. My

poor husband who is about at the end of his rope came running. We got

me up from the floor and nothing seems any worse.

No one seen me fall,

that is the main thing. It is always the first thing that I think of.

I go around so slow that I never think it will happen.

I match your instruction and raise it one. Not just those on prednisone.

I'm sorry, but this " think I'll be fine " routine doesn't get it for any

of us. Most of us did that about our breathing for too long. But now we

can't afford other problems. An infection can set us significantly back.

A break of a bone can impair our ability to keep ourselves going and

healthy. None of us can make our lungs suddenly well, but we can fight

with all we've got to keep everything else in the best shape possible.

Don't buy the stories that if I can still use it there's nothing broken

because that is very false. There is no such thing for us as a " common

cold " as its all a threat to our system. I'm determined to do as much as

possible to keep PF (well and possible auto immune) as the only serious

health problems I have. If I slip and fall and hurt my back, I'll be to

the doctor to make sure nothing wrong and then to the physical therapist

to get me active again quickly. I know that every week I'm unable to be

as active as possible I lose a bit.

Also if you are on pred, make sure you take your calcium supplement and I now take residronate sodium. My latest bone scan (I have one every couple of years) showed that I don't have, and am not at risk of osteoporosis. If you don't take a calcium supplement, make sure you have plenty of calcium in your diet. It is found in dairyfoods and green leafy veg. Sesame seeds are also a good source.

Take care of yourselves

What an amazing history, Mike! How you do it would make a great and inspirational book. I'll be your editor if you want to write it. I'll say the prayers for you, but I don't know if I'm in good graces just now.

Re: Falling / Jane

Bruce speaks wisely as usual. I have had between 15-20 surgeries in my life - so many I have lost count. But after each and every one of them, I worked vigorously to bring about healing as quickly as I could - to put the ailment behind me as if it never happened. Besides the IPF of which I have no control over, I have other one other existing condition which I must deal now with since I was approved for a transplant listing. I have had a paralyzed diaphragm in the up position for over 20 years and amazingly my body was able to cope by making just a few adjustments. During that time span several organs in my body were displaced. My heart moved to the right side of my body (freaks doctors out all the time for they can find it on the left), my stomach is located where the lower half of my left lung should be and my esophagus is all twisted about to the point each time

I've had an endoscopy, doctors were freaked out again as they thought I had this gargantuan hiatel hernia that would require emergency surgery. Yet with all this I have done just fine - until the IPF of course. Now I have been told this paralyzed diaphragm could pose a significant risk to a successful lung transplant should that day arrive. As a result, I am scheduled to have the diaphragm (plication) repaired at the Univ of Wisconsin Madison the 10th of this month. It will put the exercising on hold right now as my wife and I (along with my oxygen tanks) have gotten into a routine of weight training and treadmill 5-6 days a week. You can count on me to get out of that bed and into an exercise clinic as soon as I can as I try to put yet one more surgery behind me. It is like Bruce says. You have to do everything in your power to keep your ailments limited and to fight this monster

every step of the way.

Would appreciate any prayers you good people could send my way this week. I will do my best not let you down!

Mike

I agree completely, you cant be care ful enough, a few years back

when I was on 40mg of prednisone i had a fracture in the spine when

I lifted a tub of water , the back had given me a warning the day

before but i ignored it, this time i fell in the bathroom broke the

spine and lay on the floor and couldnt move an inch and oh! the pain

was unbearable, I had to be lifted out of the bathroom by my son and

husband , felt horribly mortified and helpless, fractures can make

you immoblie ,you dont get asingle spot that is painless. now I am

always careful especially of my back.

Thanks for posting this. I too have bone loss from the prednisone and need to remember to be careful.
