I would totally be into this! Feel free to email me off-list to set

something up - alicezillah@...

And I want to stay on this wonderful list too... I am learning so much. I

feel like I have friends out there that I've never met. Thank you all for

the inspiration, perspective, humor, wisdom, and sharing so honestly of

yourselves...

veg intuitive eaters

Hello fellow vegetarians!

It seems that there are quite a few of us on this list. Are any

vegetarian list members interested in branching off and starting a

small discussion group specifically on the fun of being veggie or

vegan and an intuitive eater? I'd LOVE to talk vegetarianism with

others without the obesity and diet talk!

Cheers,

, I would like to join a group like that. I find many vegans/vegetarians I know to be hostile to body diversity and many without outright troubling eating disordered thinking. I am also in the Animal Rights groups who have a large percentage of people who openly use obesity shaming as a tactic to further their agenda. It would be nice to have like minded people to keep the tone positive.JennaFrom:

I think it's a great idea!I'm not a vegetarian or vegan, nor do I hope to be, but for those who are... I think it can definitely fit in with the IE way of life. And I have known a number of of vegetarians and vegans in my life have used their label as a way to hide eating disorders, so the idea of IE PLUS vegetarian/vegan is awesome!

One thing that i think would be great, too, is talking about being " veg " (shorter than typing " vegetarian or vegan " every time) is how it doesn't have to be a 100% of the time thing.

Best,AbbyIE since 11/08, and an inadvertent vegetarian much of the time

I would join that group :)

Thanks!

Thanks Abby!

I'm actually interested in ethical vegetarianism, which is pretty much an all or nothing thing. I'm more and more vegan each day, but won't be 100% vegan because I want to live in this world without great difficulty.

I think "veg part of the time" would be a nice discussion on this list, and then those who are totally/strictly vegetarian can discuss this. I think I will start a new list, and will let you all know tonight so you can join if you wish.

This is not to split the group AT ALL, but to talk about a very niche situation...those of us who eat vegetarian for ethics/belief AND follow an intuitive eating path.

YES on the animal rights groups. I feel out of place when I go because obesity is considered such a hot-button topic. And then when vegan and diet get mixed together, I get upset.

Ciao!

While I understand that you are 100% committed to vegetarianism, and I do respect that, surely someone who eats meat only once a month would be recognized by the " ethical vegetarian " as making a significant committment to animal rights (or whatever issue you hold paramount), compared to the person who eats meat daily?

Like, I understand it's a " all or nothing thing " for you... but I hope you can see it might not be for everyone? Personally, I have seen that the all or nothing viewpoint scares away some who might otherwise be interested... Especially as this is an IE group, where we try not to make ANY absolute, black and white rules.

I don't want to start a political debate, and since it's your group, it's your call... but I hope you will consider making the group inclusive to ALL who are interested, even if they don't measure up to the high standard you set for yourself.

Best,Abby

ps because I think that some who eat vegetarian MOST of the time ALSO for ethical reasons may feel unfairly excluded... not for ANY of us to judge who is or is not committed to an issue... but I DO think it's fair that to say that the group will be discussing veg issues, and not focusing on the issues of those who eat meat occasionally. does that make sense? to focus on the issues, and not on the behavior of the individuals?

Abby, Good points! I was vegetarian from 13 to about 22 then I gave it up because I was living in Asia in places where is was very difficult to be 100% meat free. I was then eating meat from 22-30 thought kinda of constantly racked with guilt about it. The years prior to going 100% back to vegetarianism I started eating meat only from Amish farms that I knew were treating the animals as humanely as possible. To eating meat only on the weekends. It was actually my BF who I met and was vegetarian and his influence that got me back into the place that is right for me. SO I agree totally that those on the edge can be pushed over by friends and community members where that is the norm. It is so powerful. I think the group can include the almost Veg and the Veg lifestyle

considerators.JennaTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Mon, March 14, 2011 3:12:14 PMSubject: Re: Re: veg intuitive eaters

Hello Abby and Jenna,

I respectfully disagree. I would like a space to discuss vegetarianism and intuitive eating with those who also believe that killing animals for food is wrong, or who have chosen vegetarianism for other ethical reasons. I'm against meat broth, fish consumption (which is pescaterianism, not vegetarianism), etc. Eating meat once a month is not vegetarianism. It IS an ethical lifestyle, and I applaud you for that, but it is not vegetarianism.

In other words, I am not criticizing anyone's choices. I'd just like a space for those of us who never eat meat to convene and discuss intuitive eating from a vegetarian perspective.

This is not about "measuring up to high standards". I'm not setting those standards for anyone else. I'm just offering a nice space for those of us who believe a certain way to meet together and talk. I've been excluded from a forum because I'm not 100% vegan, and I RESPECT that. It's totally cool for those who are vegan to want their own safe space to discuss the ethics, concerns, etc. of being vegan. I get it.

Thanks for understanding,

,I understand your ethical lifestyle, I share them too. I am a huge advocate for animal rights and I do extensive animal rescue work within my city along with a vegetarian lifestyle. Our voices are often small compared to the greater and loud majority who see nothing wrong with treating animals like things and commodities rather than living creatures. That being said, and while I respect and understand your position I am at heart an integrationist. I have turned many semi-meat eating people into full blown vegan/vegetarianism who were leaning that way and needed a final push. Excluding people who are interested, if on the fence, works against our ultimate goal, leading people to an ethical lifestyle. And anyway, how are we to know every person in your group is 100% vegan,

vegetarian? They could lie. There is no way to monitor this and in fact I appreciate the honesty and openness Abby shared with the group about where she was in this process. As a vegetarian I have felt at times that I cannot discuss that I still drink milk and eat yogurt among vegan friends. I have my reasons for doing so... they oftentimes just are vegan but do not rescue work like I do, for them it is more a cerebral choice while mine is in my hands, my rooms, my late nights trapping animals who are abused....who is to say who is more ethical in these cases? While I understand completely your desire to to create a space that honors you and others and are welcome to it. I need to rethink joining a group that excludes interested people.Peace,JennaTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Mon, March 14, 2011 6:06:09 PMSubject: Re: Re: veg intuitive eaters

That is what is the power of online Groups - common interest discussions!

Whenever I have thought of vegetarian eating, it didn't last for me because I

enjoy omnivore eating too much. And while I do have a sister in-law who is

pretty much vegetarian because she reacts so strongly to meats (especially

chicken), for me an all veggie option sounds too much like 'clean' or 'healthy'

directions which are way too EXternal driven for keeping me INternal focused

which I believe IE aims me for.

Enjoy! Katcha

I was vegetarian for 2 years, and vegan for about 4 hours... haha (allergic to

soy and have a nut-free home due to my ds' ana-allergies and just couldn't do

it)... Then I had a miscarriage last March and started hemorrhaging. I had to be

transported over land and sea for emergency surgery, and really struggled to get

my blood composition/levels back to normal. I started eating fish and

immediately felt 100x better. So... technically I'm pescetarian now. :)
