Guest guest
Holy Cow! That story is crazy, and to think she is only 23! She will have a long life. My nada has repeatedly been dying from something over the years. The first time she had " ovarian cancer " I was 8 and VERY worried! I brought it up to my doctor/her doctor also after giving birth because I wanted them to check for any signs in me at my check up. I was so worried because my grandma also had it and my aunt had the some things removed too form the same area all around my age, so I really thought I needed to be careful. I was talking to him about my " family medical history " or so I thought, when he told me, " no that never happened, she never had that. she lied to you " And that is when he told me all about BPD/NPD and Conversion Reaction Disorder. I about had to change my pants, I couldn't believe my ears. Ever since I have paid closer attention, and noticed all the many times she is " dying " . Now it is somewhat of a joke, we try to guess what she will catch next. Once we were playing the guessing game, and we had the medical dictionary open at a holiday at my grandma's house and dishrag unexpectedly walked in! OPPS! We quickly put it away. Lol! The real funny thing, is that just a few weeks later she was dying of something, but we were all wrong on the guess. My only fear is that I won't believe her when she really is dying of something…..LB > > My step mother has been " dying " from everything since I met her more than 20 years ago. Guest guest
Great story. I've seen other stories of people faking illness or pretending their children are ill just to raise money for themselves. I thought it was interesting that the woman said she was diagnosed as BPD. Makes me wonder if you can believe anything she says. My nada loves to tell people that she's been through the cancer business 5 times. Gets sympathy that way. She's never had cancer of course but she did have some bowel problems and had to have colonoscopies for awhile. She managed to convince people she was being treated for cancer. Also had a little cyst removed from a breast (not cancer) but she tells people she fought breast cancer. Makes me sick. > > My step mother has been " dying " from everything since I met her more than 20 years ago. Recently she " developed " cancer. Guest guest
I think this problem is far more widespread with BPD than is recognized. It's called a " factitious disorder " or Munchaussen's, there are differences from Munchaussen's. My nada had a very complicated health history...complicated by this co-morbidity with PBD and bipolar disorders. If you're interested I wrote a memoir about dealing with and recovering from my mother's illnesses. Here's the link: https://sites.google.com/site/nonborderlinedaughter/ My nada succeeded in persuading her doctors that she had type 2 and then type 1 diabetes, and had one leg amputated as a consequence of creating infection. We also went around the block with " cancer " . My brothers and I are still detangling all the knots to her medical history as it may relate to our own wellness as we age. There are far too few resources online that deal with factitious disorder and BPD, but I'd be happy to share what I've found with anyone who wants to read further. > > > > My step mother has been " dying " from everything since I met her more than 20 years ago. Guest guest
WOW! I just looked up Conversion Disorder, and this describes perfectly one of the mysterious illnesses that she has been dying from for the last 20 years! I'm not really shocked, but at the same time shocked! She told me once, maybe 10 years ago that " her brain is dying " and she had all these tests and appointments but the neurologist couldn't figure it out and didn't know what was happening and they were going to study her (HA!). She has many of the symptoms listed on that WIKI info page on CD. As for her " cancer " I honestly don't know if she has/had it or not. I'm on her $hit list right now because I wasn't supportive enough (I guess the phone calls, e-mails and care package wasn't enough in her opinion). And she has declared that she is never talking me again (big loss). My MIL has been through cancer three times, and we lost her sister in November to cancer(during all the drama over my stepnadas cancer). The difference between a normal person with cancer and my stepnada is significant. I think that we're sympathetic enough. Not to mention the fact that this whole thing started when I made plans with my dad to come to my home for xmas last year (husband was deployed and I was dreaming of a christmas where my girls spent quality time with my dad and maybe created a bond). She didn't want too, and wasn't hiding the fact very well, then she was DX'd with cancer? Could be a coincidence. So, during this time, I apparently " naggeed and badgered " about xmas and wouldn't leave them alone to deal with their terrible illness. *rolling eyes* If I nagged and badgered, it was cause I wanted a straight up answer so I could make plans. They NEVER gave me a yes/no answer to coming here or not until it was too late to get plane deals, it was " well, we understand if you want to make other plans " which in code means " go ahead and make other plans, and I'll always remember that you abandoned me at christmas time during my time of need " . To me, all I wanted was a bloody answer so I could be sure that my kids were with family at Christmas. We live on the other side of the country from family, husband was deployed and there was NO WAY I was spending Christmas here alone with the kids. OMG, why are we saddled with these nutjobs? Guest guest
My nada will do that - read something in the newspaper medical section and claim that's exactly what's wrong with her. We joke about her " disease of the week. " For ages I grew up thinking I'd had surgery for skin cancer. That's what she told me. I even put it on my medical records for years. One time we were doing some paperwork for insurance and they're very serious about medical history so I pinned her down about some questions I had. Turns out she finally said I did NOT have cancer, just surgery to remove a large mole on my hand. Very frustrating for me. Even nowadays she'll use my health problems to garner attention for herself. Ick. > On Sat, Aug 21, 2010 at 6:42 AM, faerydancing96 wrote: > > > > Holy Cow! That story is crazy, and to think she is only 23!
