robert, are you totally blind and need a voice activated meter, question.

Glucose meter

Hello list members,

I am new to the list members. My name is . I live in Georgia. I need

to ask a question. I never owned a glucose meter. I am blind. What is a code

when using a glucose meter? Some meters have a code and other does not.

Since I am blind what is the easiest to use. Thanks very much. All answers

will be appreciated. Those who have use both types of glucosemeter explain.

For those of us who are blind, or have a major visual impairment, there are

essentially only 2 choices for fully accessible, audible meters. One is the

Prodigy Voice, and the other is the Solo V2.

There are a few differences with them, but not too many. I've used both, and am

presently using the Solo V2 manufactured by Biosense. Go to the below link to

read about it:

http://solometers.com/

The other one is the Prodigy Voice, manufactured by DDI, or Digital Devices Inc.

Go to the below link to read about it:

http://www.prodigyvoice.com/

While each of these companies says there is software available to download data

from the meter to present to your doctor, or to review, note that neither

company actually has working software at this time.

I will be doing some beta testing for Biosense for the Solo V2 software in the

near future. The software currently available at their web site is all but

inaccessible.

Digital Devices has been saying they will have software for the Prodigy Voice

for years now, but it has yet to appear.

One feature I like with the Prodigy Voice is the repeat button. After performing

a test, and you want to hear the reading again, simply press this repeat button.

The Prodigy Voice strips are thicker than those for the Solo V2, and the score

line on the end of the strip to be inserted into the meter is easier to detect

with the Prodigy strips than with the Solo V2.

Perhaps some others will chime in with their thoughts and opinions about the

meter they use.

First, welcome to the list.

Second, neither talking meter has to be coded. In fact, I don't think there

are any meters that are coded anymore. It is a matter of preference which

meter you like the best. I use the Prodigy meter as it is easier for me to

get strips for it rather than the Solo. But then, maybe I just have not

found where to get the Solo strips. Also, you will have to ask your

insurance company which brand they will cover.

Someone asked:

" I have never heard of those. Where are they from? "

Me:

If you mean where one can get them they have sales in the u.s. If you mean

where they are made it looks to me they are from taiwan like the other

meters that are fully accessable with speech. Here is their page again

with contact info if you would want to know more.

I finally looked up the info on the link you sent Dan and then called them.

Most of those meters have to have a code key with every new bottle of

strips, but the newest one V22 does not have to be coded.

I did not find out price as she said it deepened on whether or not you had

insurance. As I presently have about 500 strips for the Prodigy Voice, I

really don't need a new meter. I still have not purchased strips for the

meter I bought from Gray. There is such a thing as being

over-metered!

The original Prodigy Voice came in a soft case, and if you sneezed, the meter

reacted! But, I learned to deal with it and it proved to be a good meter for me.

When I ended up getting the newer and supposedly improved model, which was much

less prone to be activated, I still ended up using the older one. It's been a

good while now, and I don't remember my reasons.

Re: Glucose meter

Hello,

I don't know about that, as I only read the manual and learned from a

trusted source about the first Fora meter being, in essence, a clone.

The problem of pressing the buttons has a lot to do with the case the

meter comes in.

Someone shared:

" The Fora meters are made in the same factory in Taiwan as the Prodigy

Voice. They used to be one company. The Fora V20 is a clone of the older

Prodigy Voice. I'm not familiar at all with the others. " Me:

As I have suspected the Prodigy originally was a sales branch of the taiwan

manufacture of the electronics with custom cases. It appears the recent

rash of speaking meters, many not fully speaking, use the same electronic

innards from the same company but ad various levels of speech access.

The Fora now seems to have established its own sales here. There are 3

fully accessable models more recent then the v20 with all the functions and

features the other companies have now too.

I wonder if the fora software is accessable for screen readers? It

includes the function to send results to your doctor over the internet.

This feature, the ability to send the readings to a desired destination is

intriguing. With the other 2 meters, the Prodigy Voice and the Solo V2, it is

presently impossible for us to access the data. If the FORA can send this data

via the Internet, is it possible to access it some other way also, such as

outputting to a spread sheet?
