Guest guest
Hi Bruce - Thanks for your detailed comments. I did some online research on that particular model, my daughter drove me over to look at it and I was able to purchase it for $500! You are correct about it being a bit much for me to lift in/out of my Chrysler Concorde, but when I get to CA, I have a Chrysler To & Oc Minivan (both used) that will have a lower back area and no 'lip' to have to lift it over, as the sedan does. We put a bathmat over the edge of the trunk/bumper and I was able to leverage it against the edge of the trunk and let it slide down to the driveway. I used it today shopping with my daughter...I would never have been able to last the 2 hrs. if I had been walking. And since my children are in 3 states (CA, CO, and NC) now I can take it with me to use at each place. This way, I'm able to enjoy all my children and grandchildren! I checked with American Airlines, and apparently some (not all) aircraft have a compartment on board with space for one folding scooter; otherwise it must go in the baggage cargo. I think that I'll either stitch a large bag or perhaps can find a GI duffel bag of the proper size to protect it from the baggage handlers. I'm delighted to have it! Oh, it has two wheels in front,m but they are only about 10-inches apart. I was able to tool around easily...now I'm looking forward to being able to go to museums, galleries, and antiquing, etc. with the help of my newfound handy mobility! Also my children gave me membership to a program where I can attend classes in any of the 3 states, but I had gotten to a point where I was unable to walk from a parking area to a class...this opens new vistas for me...how good does it get? :<) Oh yes, and my pulmonologist here in Raleigh, said that I apparently have NSIP PF at a moderate level and that there are several differnt kinds...two that move fairly quickly and then a moderate, and a slow version. Thanks again for your input - Warm regards - JoanM (now in NC; next week in CA for about 6 mos.)
Guest guest
Joan Even when they have to put it in baggage you can wait to check it until you reach the gate and ask for it to be returned to you at the gate when you disembark. That will generally get it some protection too. If they do damage it, they are responsible and there are places that specialize in airline scooter repairs and even furnishing units while its out. Its great you got it. Don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it while traveling. I just love to see people doing things to keep enjoying life as well as they can. I don't use my chair much yet but I'm sure glad to have it for the times I will need it and the places I couldn't enjoy without it. > > > Hi Bruce - > > Thanks for your detailed comments. Guest guest
Kathy The new prices on all the scooters and powerchairs are high. However, there are always used ones available. I got a powerchair for $500. I found it on craigslist. Also some on ebay but not necessarily local. I just checked local craigslist out of curiosity. Pride 3 Never Used-$725 Merit Electric Scooter-$950 Repost Mobility Scooter Never Used-$500 ePower by Vitacare-Almost New-$500 Pillar Deluxe Blazer Model (Older)-$250 Electric Power Scooter under 6 Years-$300 Electric Power Chair-$700 Pride Rally (purchased 2001, used 3 months)-$200 Jet 3-$950 Brand New Electric Scooter Still in Box-$875 Merits Power Wheelchair-$400 Power Chair-$275 Power Wheel Chair=$295 Now I also saw some in craigslist at $2000, $2500, and $3500 used. But we see the new prices from $2000-6000 and go into shock. However, there are plenty of good used ones. Unfortunately, many are purchased but little used. > > > > > > > > > Hi Bruce - > > > > > > Thanks for your detailed comments. Guest guest
Bruce, What do you know about "THE SCOOTER STORE" they advertise that if medicare denies you get it free. I wonder if medicare actually pays for one?? any idea? Oh yes are you going to come over in Sept ?? Gonna have FUNNNNN. No agenda... just the porch.. grill. gab and hugs of course.. Love and Prayers, Peggy   IPF  2004,  Florida"Worry looks around, Sorry looks back,  Faith looks up." Guest guest
Peggy I hate their ads but actually like The Scooter Store. I have used them to adjust my chair and check it out. I've also visited their physical store. Rest assured they are very careful not to give any chairs away. The ad implies they have some magic toward your approval. Now, they do know what it takes so they can be sure you and the doctor write things up correctly and do the right things. The medicare requirement is that you need a chair to get around inside your home. Then they will determine what chair meets those needs (they of course aim for the cheapest they can although you can sometimes work into an upgrade with you paying the difference). It is difficult for a respiratory patient to qualify and requires a doctor who is really on your side. Never hurts to talk to The Scooter Store or others. Here is the basic information: Q: What are the Medicare requirements for mobility products?Medicare requirements change frequently but have more recently become more stringent. The following information is provided as a courtesy only. It is the customer's responsibility to verify the accuracy of the information. Scooters A prescription A Certificate of Medical Necessity (CMN)* Medicare requests that the physician ordering a scooter be one of the following specialists: Physiatrist, Orthopedist, Neurologist or Rheumatologist In order to fill out the CMN for a scooter and be considered medically necessary, the following coverage criteria must all be met: The patient is unable to operate a manual wheelchair within his or her residence and would otherwise be confined to bed. The patient is capable of safely operating the controls for the scooter. The patient can transfer safely in and out of the scooter, and have adequate trunk stability for safety. The patient's condition must be such that a POV is required for the patient to get around WITHIN his or her residence. A POV that is beneficial primarily in allowing the patient to perform leisure or recreational activities will be denied as a non medically necessity. Power Chairs A prescription A Certificate of Medical Necessity (CMN)*Medicare requests that the physician ordering a scooter be one of the following specialists: Physiatrist, Orthopedist, Neurologist or Rheumatologist In order to fill out a CMN for an electric wheelchair and be covered the following criteria must be met: The patients condition is such that without the use of a wheelchair the patient would be bed or chair confined, and The patient's condition is such that a wheelchair is medically necessary and the patient is unable to operate a manual wheelchair. The patient is capable of safely operating the controls of a power wheelchair. The patient requires the use of a wheelchair to move around their residence. The patient has severe weakness of the upper extremities due to a neurological, muscular, or cardiopulmonary disease or condition. The patient's condition is such that a power wheelchair will be needed long term. The patient's condition is such that without the use of a wheelchair would be bed or chair confined. Because part of Medicare criteria is that the patient be unable to operate a manual wheelchair, if Medicare has previously covered the rental of a manual wheelchair, the manual wheelchair must be returned to the company that supplied it before Medicare will cover the cost of an electric wheelchair. >> Bruce, What do you know about "THE SCOOTER STORE" they advertise that > if medicare denies you get it free. Guest guest
Peggy I just figured I'd need one and get benefit from one long before qualifying and although I couldn't have afforded the retail price of a new one (plus a lift for my van), decided that a used one was well worth it. > > > > Bruce, What do you know about " THE SCOOTER STORE " they advertise that > > if medicare denies you get it free. Guest guest
Just got my invacare power chair this week. Medicare paid for it all. The local company took what ever medIcare would assign. I had to buy a lift for my van at $2,577. installed. Guest guest
Yes, my scooter was $500 but lift was $3200.....oh well. State of Texas paid over $1000 of the lift by not charging sales tax on the van. But i put the chair in the back and the liquid reservoir in the second row of seats and I can go anywhere. Glad to hear you got one although sorry you qualify because of the condition that means. Did it take you long to get approved? I'm sure your Polymyositis helped too as they like autoimmune diseases better than lung. Well, that and the PH. Guest guest
The paper work took about 3 months for the approval. Some of that was due to errors on the forms, my salesman was not the smartest. Had to have a independent therapist check me out. She said that my lungs would give out before the mositis would get me. I got a swing arm lift, just mailed off the paper work for the $1,000 back. Guest guest
No, I didn't get a new van but got one with 24,000 miles as I didn't figure I would put that many miles on one. The savings on the cost far offset the mobility reimbursement. I sort of wish I'd gotten the lift you got although the one I got is fine. It is nice that the incentives are out there, whether sales tax or mobility reimbursements. Also, the costs are deductible as medical expenses so some tax benefit. I'm going to end up with medical expenses of around $15,000 again this year. > > > From: Peggy pac1773@ > > > Subject: Re: Re: Easy Travel Scooter > > > To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. com > > > Date: Saturday, August 2, 2008, 8:50 PM > > > > > > > > > Bruce, What do you know about " THE SCOOTER STORE " they advertise that > > if medicare denies you get it free. Guest guest
Kathy Go to craigslist and choose Orlando and then under buy enter a search for " scooter " and another for " power chair " with it set to all buy and sell categories. You will find around 7 or 8 nice chairs in the $500 range. Also some very inexpensive lifts that make me feel sort of stupid with what I paid for mine. In your area there are far more than here due to the age of the population. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi Bruce - > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Thanks for your detailed comments. Guest guest
Bruce, I too think that was the smart thing to do. If you waited you may not be able to do leg work later on. Love and Prayers, Peggy   IPF  2004,  Florida"Worry looks around, Sorry looks back,  Faith looks up."
