Guest guest
Bruce, don't sweat the heat. That's just Texas being Texas and surviving it is what makes Texas tough. Or so they think. Texas and 100 plus degree days goes all the way back to the ice age when I was a kid on a small family farm in Fannin County, about 75 miles nortrh east of Dallas. No air conditioning. No ice. From the age nine till high school graduation, I picked cotton every day from early August through September, from sun up to sun down. Well, not every day. We stopped at noon on Saturday, bathed in a #4 wash tub that sat in the sun all day so the water was plenty hot, then piled in the wagon and let the mules pull us the four miles to town. If I had an extra dime, which was not often, I went to the movie huse which had, as I recall, something called a sump pump which pumped water in a continuous circle while fans where blowing air over it. It cooled the movie house enough to make you feel like you were on the far side of hell and a bit closer to heaven. I can remember hitting the fields around five o'clock and already sweating. I don't regret the experience. It was the greatest impetus for going to college. I haven't picked cotton since I was 17. Jack79/IPF - UIP/dx06/05 Maine Heat.....Heat.....and more Heat Ok, just venting as I'm about to go out. Yes, I knew July and August were months one couldn't do anything here. But, still....knowing and then being back in it are two different things. Think I'm going to head to the mall and just walk around inside it a bit. Otherwise, cabin fever is going to take over. So, here's today's headline: The forecast high for today is 104, with 106 on Sunday and 104 again on Monday. But some forecasters expect it to be even hotter — 107 on Sunday and 108 on Monday. Or the warning: DANGEROUS SUMMER HEAT IS EXPECTED TO INTENSIFY THROUGH THE WEEKEND WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES RANGING BETWEEN 103 AND 107 DEGREES SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY. THESE HOT TEMPERATURES WILL COMBINE WITH MODERATE HUMIDITY VALUES TO PRODUCE HEAT INDEX VALUES BETWEEN 105 AND 112 DEGREES. THE HOTTEST DAYS ARE EXPECTED TO BE SUNDAY AND MONDAY. Ok, should be use to it. Every day recently has been either 104 or 105. Every day in July was over 95. Maybe this will be another one of the August's where every day is over 100. Oh I can't wait for September.
