Hi Deb,

Glad to see another newbie here! You asked to share how the IE is going, and I

say - it's OVERWHELMING. It feels like swimming without a lifejacket, and my

lifejacket is counting calories. I have not written them down today and I have

no idea now much I have eaten and whether I am over my limit yet or not. It's

scary stuff. I've been watching my stomach all day, asking whether I am hungry

all the time, not trusting it to tell me first. Only now I am seeing my calorie

control as a perverse way to address eating. I have a long way to go, lol, but I

am inspired.

Tell us about your progress!

Blessings,

Nastia.

GREAT way to live your life but I'm not sure how the weight loss occurs. I'm

only 3/4 of the way through book. Can you clue me in?

Hi, Deb, and welcome to our group!

I think most people who start IE want to lose weight, but ironically if that's your main goal, it tends to get in the way. I found it difficult at first to put this goal aside since I have a considerable amount I'd like to lose (about 50 pounds, having lost 30-some on WW already), but quite recently I finally put my scales away since I'd decided not to weigh myself and the scale was only making me feel lousy. I also tore up my old WW weight loss chart that hung inside my medicine cabinet and replaced it with a nice outdoors picture of a place I'd like to hike.

It's been a couple of months since I weighed myself, and so I can't say *for sure* that I've lost, but I am fairly certain that I have, because not only are people commenting (including my husband, who doesn't notice unless there's a considerable loss), but also I am now fitting easily into the smallest clothes I own, clothes that I've not been able to wear for, oh, 15 years or so. I feel great and food is a non-issue. I'm exercising and enjoying it for the first time in my life: I walk several times a week and do Nia two or three times a week, not because I feel I "ought to," but because I'm having a great time moving. I literally never think about food until I'm hungry, instead of obsessing about it nonstop. I haven't binged since I started IE, though occasionally I do eat more than I need to satisfy hunger, but even those incidents are getting less frequent. I like feeling not stuffed; I never thought I'd say that.

I'm also addressing issues that I've put aside for years, and loving how this is going. I feel great.

I hope this works for you as well as it has for me. If I accomplished no further weight loss than I already have, I'd be fairly content, and that's priceless.

All best,

Laurie

Deb,

I am very new here also and waiting for my Intuitive Eating book in the mail.

If I can get things on the right track for myself with IE, I hope to support

others, in my ministry, in their journey with this same issue. Thank you for

your encouragement, it means a great deal! (I am the pastor.) I am sending it

right back to you ... " You go girl! " Hope you are having success for today in

listening for and waiting for hunger and enough.

Blessings,

Carolyn

Laurie,

Your statements " I feel great, " and " food is a non-issue, " are amazing and are

exactly what someone like me ... one who is presently at the REALLY struggling,

pre-beginning stage of the IE journey ... needs to hear!

When I was treating my eating disorder as an addiction and I eliminated

sugar, flour, sweetener from my diet for a long enough period of time ... I

actually did get to that period where I could say those same things. But, that

was a couple years ago now (my goodness the years of struggle add up)! I think

because I finally actually know what freedom from the battle with food is (as

much mental as physical) ... I ABSOLUTELY MUST get back to finding the peace

that is presently alluding me. It is surely the way that life is intended to be

lived.

Fortunately I can still run, in fact I just returned from a 40 minute run with

friends. I have also started to bike, too bad it has taken me so long to get my

bike out the door. Now the winter weather is around the corner. brrrr But, I

am so glad that I started on the road to fitness back in 2001 and by 2003, when

I turned 50 I ran my first half marathon ... since then I have done about 8.

Who would have ever thought that I wouldn't immediately be able to state how

many half I have done!!! Certainly not me. I would have thought that to run

one, would have been some type of miracle. So, I am most grateful for this

level of wellness that I have achieved. All that to say that I have still not

overcome this battle with food and presently have 40 to 60 lbs to lose. If I

lost 40, I would be so much closer to a healthy weight and likely 60 would have

me at a place of needing to lose no more.

I knew from reading Geneen Roth's books that in beginning the IE journey that it

could be possible that people would put on food when all foods suddenly became

permissible. Well, guess what ... it happened!!! My food habits could be

likened to a 'runaway-train!' So, yesterday I needed to purposely derail it

because seriously, it was not good. I was in so much pain (mentally and

physically) from the bingeing that I knew I needed to do something. I have

started a cleanse for a few days which will hopefully help me to turn this

situation around. I am hoping that the cleanse made from organic protein and

vegetables will help me to be able to reduce the cravings. Wouldn't you know it

this weekend is Thanksgiving in Canada! :) Well, I am very thankful for oh so

much and when I hear of some stories of others who have so many challenges in

their life it is truly frustrating that this is still plaguing me. So, maybe

come Monday I will be able to eat a little of our Thanksgiving dinner. I'll

see.

Blessings, and again thank you so much for this post and others that I have

read. I look forward to your words of wisdom and experience, you are an

inspiration.
