Guest guest
Sixty grams of carbs are a lot. I usually don't eat any more than 45 grams and often less. Glad you are hanging in Harry! _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Harry Bates Sent: Thursday, January 19, 2012 4:16 PM To: blind-diabetics Subject: carbs consumed recommended by indocrinologist Dr. Welch, my indocrinologist recommends 60 grams of carbs per meeal, breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is too much for me along with her recommendations for insulin use, which is 18 units of Humalog for breakfast, 18 units of Humalog for lunch, and 27 units of Humalog for supper. I find that consuming 45 grams of carbs at each meal to be just fine without shooting my glr's sky high. Of course she has a formula for me to inject more insulin, if the pre-meal glr is over 100 by 50 points or more. For each 50 points over 100 of glr pre-meal ai am to inject an additional unit of Humalog. If I only consume 45 to 50 grams of carbs per meal, it usually works out just fine. Just plugging along here, Harry Had we never seen the stars, and the sun, and the heaven, none of the words which we have spoken about the universe would ever have been uttered. But now the sight of day and night, and the months and the revolutions of the years, have created number, and have given us a conception of time, and the power of enquiring about the nature of the universe; and from this source we have derived philosophy, than which no greater good ever was or will be given by the gods to mortal man. Guest guest
As I mentioned in an earlier message, take a look at several things: Blood sugar readings (including the A1C), body weight, and general nutrition. If someone eating 60 grams of carbohydrate per meal can keep blood sugar readings within targeted ranges, and they can maintain a healthy body weight, and the diet is a healthy one, then 60 grams is okay. My guess is however that for most type 1 diabetics that many carbohydrates will be hard to manage, requiring higher doses of insulin and/or a lot of physical exertion to burn them up. Guest guest
Yes, Dan took at least 50 pounds off and is firmly convinced that if you lose the weight you will lose the diabetes. He is managing so well the doctor took him off insulin and I think also some of the medication. I know for a fact I have trouble managing it if I don't have my medication. I have not taken off weight but am keeping it within 7 pounds one way or the other. I know I don't test enough. When I know I've been bad I shy away from testing. carbs consumed recommended by indocrinologist > > > > > > Dr. Welch, my indocrinologist recommends 60 grams of carbs per meeal, > breakfast, lunch and dinner. Guest guest
It's my brother, is my husband. He is not a diabetic but when they put him on the feeding tube in the hospital they gave him insulin. So when we came home he got a lot of insulin but after a while every time he tested he was within the right numbers and did not need it. So I have a bunch of insulin in the fridge but I am still on the oral medication, the glyburide. I am having a so-so time managing my diabetes but so far the doctor did not want me to start insulin. I guess it has a long life in the fridge but I have no idea what one would do with 3 things of insulin. My brother Dan is 8 years younger and in 2009 he felt really bad and took himself to the hospital. He had sugar past 600 and a heart condition. He has taken off more than 50 pounds, gotten rid of the insulin and is trying to get rid of the oral medication. I wish that was true for me. I don't really have a lot of weight to shed but 20 or 30 pounds would not hurt me, that is for sure. They gave the insulin because they said there is a lot of glucose in that canned food that he got with the feeding tube. He is totally off of that now but I have over a hundred cans of that stuff too. The suppliers cannot legally take it back so I don't know what to do with it. I also have a couple bottles of megace that the doctor prescribed to stimulate his appetite. So I have no idea what to do with insulin, megace, and cans of feeding tube food. --- Original Message ----- To: <blind-diabetics > Sent: Friday, January 20, 2012 4:11 PM Subject: Re: carbs consumed recommended by endocrinologist Only a type 2 can " lose " the diabetes. Guest guest
Ask the local hospital if they collect insulin to send to third workd countries. Guest guest
I do that a lot. I am OK if something is not where I can come into contact with it all the time. Do any of you know how bad it is to eat those little hard pieces of butterscotch or a a gumdrop once in a while. I find my mouth feels like Dragon Mouth sometimes when I get up. I sometimes take a sip of mouthwash and swish it around. But other times I grab one of 's gumdrops and it takes me a long time to swallow the gumdrop or the butterscotch hard candy. I wonder if it is better to do that than to go eat something because it lasts a long time? I just don't know the calories or carbs on those little candies. carbs consumed recommended by >> indocrinologist >> > >> > >> > >> > >> > >> > Dr. Welch, my indocrinologist recommends 60 grams of carbs per meeal, >> > breakfast, lunch and dinner. Guest guest
Small hard candies have minimal carbohydrates. Unless you eat one after another, you'll be fine having one as you describe. But as I always promote, do some extra bg testing when you eat something different to see in fact exactly what they do to you. Dave ~~ Win a copy of a newly released EBook!
