Hi Joy,Well, there are no rules, but here's what I think. 1. No, you don't have to wait until your stomach is growling. For some, this may be a later sign of hunger, and may be uncomfortable. My suggestion is to eat as soon as you think you might be hungry. If possible, try to eat consciously. If the food tastes good and is satisfying, you were probably hungry. If it's only okay, or it's not hitting the spot, either you're not hungry or you're not eating the right food. In that case, try waiting a few minutes and then checking in with yourself to see what sounds good.

In my experience, and from what others' have shared, I think it will be become more obvious to you when you are definitely hungry. In the meantime, don't be afraid to experiment and explore what hunger and fullness feel like! (or what eating too much sugar feels like!)

Also, you may find that they change over time. Since I have been doing IE, I have found that my satisfaction/fullness has changed to where I don't like the feeling of " full " anymore. But i think it takes a while of consistently feeding yourself WHENEVER you are hungry for my body to feel safe stopping at merely " satisfied " and not " full. "

2. I sort of already answered this, but no, I don't think you should stop yourself if you want to keep eating. if at all possible, try to eat consciously (ie with the TV off, the book or magazine put away, not in the car, etc.) and to acknowledge to yourself, " i'm not hungry anymore, but i want to keep eating anyway, and that's fine. i give myself permission to do so. " i think over time you may find this happens less often. but as long as you are not " allowed " to overeat, it's a rule and the temptation will be there to break it!

good luck,abbyIE since 11/09

I ate too many sweets yesterday and was a little sick last night...I let myself eat them anyway though, even though I was full. Two questions:

1. Should my stomach be growling before I eat? (I usually don't wait that long)

2. Should I try to stop myself from a strong desire to eat past full or when already full if I have the overwhelming urge to keep going?

3. How do I do this?

Some days I feel hungry all stinking day long and when that happens guess what...I eat all day long :) Then I have other days that I don't get as hungry as quickly. I am starting to see that it has alot to do what what I eat. It is just a super huge learning process and takes lots of time. I am pretty new myself and still overeat from time to time and let myself get to hungry but I have been getting better at listening to my body. I am hungy now and the popcorn I am about to eat smells GOOD! Be blessed, DawnC

I so know what you mean, I too have days when I feel like I am famished and

can't seem to eat enough. And other days, I don't eat or want much food at all.

For me, I have related it to how active I am. The more active I am, usually the

day after I tend to be much more hungry. Great observations!
