Guest guest
I got a buddy name Don. he is 67, totally blind and just found out he is type 2. he loves pasta and hates veggies. he also hates the idea of sticking him self to check his sugar. I'm trying to get him on the list, but until then I would really appreciate it if you would give him some advice and I will forward the pst to him. he doesn't have a meter yet and isn't sure what to buy. I believe he said his average sugar for the last 90 days was around 360. he didn't say what his A1C was and I know he isn't sure what it is anyway. I've told him what he should do and not eat, but until you are actually a diabetic most folks ignore this kind of advice. not liking veggies is going to not help him. I told him you guys won't miss lead him, but you won't lie to him either. appreciate all the help you can give to Don. thanks.
Guest guest
Well, Mark, he can take the easy route and avoid managing his diabetes, and most likely suffer at least one of the severe complications diabetes is known for. Heart and other vascular issues, kidney, and liver problems, which ultimately have severe symptoms and often can lead to death. Not to mention not feeling good as his body slowly deteriorates. If he's running up in the 300's much of the time, he will most certainly experience some consequences. You said he is 67. Unfortunately, he has already lived most of his life, and modifying his life style to conform to one that appeases his diabetes will be a very difficult challenge. If he can wrap his head around the idea he needs to manage his diabetes, and not simply let it run its course, he'll be making a very important first step. You say he doesn't like vegetables. Are there any he can eat? Even one? Also, he'll be able to eat pasta, but probably less of it. The same with any unhealthy food/carbohydrate. If he wants to live his life feeling as good as he can, he'll have to come around to accepting his diabetes, and his role in managing it. There's no magic wand, only a determined spirit to make some changes. Guest guest
Mark, It is going to take him a while to get used to the fact he is diabetic. Keep being his good bud and encourage him to join the list and bring up his fears. I hope his doc will send him to diabetic education classes. Do keep reminding him that he will feel much better when he gets his BG level down. _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Mark Ruth Sent: Saturday, February 04, 2012 8:47 AM To: blind diabetics Subject: need your advice for a friend please.
