That reminds me, Lynn. When I had my EMG, it sounded like aliens were

invading. LOL. My muscles were soooo noisy and I had no idea what that

meant until he explained it to my afterwards. :o)

As a vegetarian you were likely almost doing the SBD anyway. :) What would

you normally eat for protein?

Hi There...

I get my protein from tofu as well as various cheeses,

eggs, yogurt and milk and nuts..

As a vegan you would NOT necessarily be adhering to

the principles of South Beach as mentioned since many

vegans eat plenty of high fat sugary deserts and

various other sinful delights..

My sister is a vegan that enjoys her chocolate mousse

cake everyday for lunch, followed by strawberries

loaded with real whipped cream.. The higher the sugar

content the better she loves it..

To be a vegan does not mean you are adhering to any

healthy eating habits.. it only means that perhaps you

are opposed to killing of animals... or that perhaps

that you just do not enjoy the texture of meat..

I tend to use my tofu in a " no stick " wok with lots of

SB approved veggies..

You can search the net and find lots of good healthy

vegan recipes and make them SB approved by modifying

them...

You can also enjoy some protein shakes..

Hi Velvet...

It is fine to stir fry in a non stick wok.. I use mine

all the time.. But I tend to wet what I am cooking

with some low sodium soy mixed with some lemon juice..

As for baking you can always make some delicious

crustless quiche's done with various veggies and low

fat cheese~~~

Hi Steph..

Yes there are certain varities of low calorie

dressings you cannot have...because they have added

sugar..

But there are alternatives that you can indeed have..

I for one do not believe in ruining a great salad by

smothering it in some high calorie dressing..

Robin,Congratulations on taking a HUGE step in starting to eat intuitively! That's awesome! And good for you for enjoying two chocolate chip cookies! And that you ate them consciously!

This is hard and scary but I promise that it DOES get easier! I think the thing that is hard is not the eating as much as the fact that you are facing your feelings and not burying them in food. That is hard work! But you will see great rewards!

Please keep us posted and let us know how you are doing.Best,AbbyPracticing IE since 11/08

Hi my name is Robin and I am new to this group and this concept of eating for hunger. Sounds weird hah? I used to be very overweight and 10 years ago I lost 195lbs and have kept it off with the exception of 20lbs which I keep yo-yo-ing back and forth with. Which is telling you that even though most of the weight has gone away the compulsive eating and bingeing hasn't. I have just been hanging on by my teeth and my jaw is killing me. ;) The only way I manage to keep most of weight off is by fasting or very restrictive dieting between binges. The binges and overeating is almost always healthy food but it doesn't matter. It's all abusive.

I just finished reading Geneen Roth's book " Women, Food and God " and it really hit home for me. I have been practicing intuitive eating for a week now and it is harder then any " diet " . To eat with awareness, to not stuff down or starve away feeling is a foreign feeling to me. For the first time today I allowed myself to have 2 homemade chocolate chips cookies my daughter made yesterday. I ate them without distraction, I was hungry, but I still feel guilty (this is a food I have deemed evil and not allowed) and want to binge. I am not though, instead I am writing to the group. I am up my customary 20lbs and normally I would be fasting right now to make sure I lost the weight before my sister visits next month. She is a personal trainer and very fit, and although I love her to death and she would not judge me, I still feel I inadequate for not being thin enough. So instead of fasting to get this weight off before she gets here I am eating cookies and trying to be kind to myself. Seems like a retarded concept but I get it now.

Hello!

I'm fairly new to IE. While I'm not overweight, I feel as though I was headed

down that path before this book.

It all started 3 years ago when I read " Skinny bitch " (avoid this book! it

ruined my life with food). I was already a skinny bitch but thought I could

improve so I decided to go vegetarian after that. That meant eating a lot of

cheese in place of meat and for the first time in my life, overeating in the

extreme. It's a lucky thing I was already into exercise. I remember having a

" farewell to Mcs " meal. A nice big mac (my favorite). Avoiding meat made

me feel morally superior. I quickly became addicted to chocolate to fill a void,

and ate it until headaches set in.

I finally decided to diet after approx a 10lb weight gain post high school over

a 3 year period (still not overweight, just skewed body preception). I limited

myself to 1200 calories a day or tried to and " failed " so I binged, because I

had already messed up anyway. I gorged on peanut butter when chocolate wasn't

around or caramel icing (two items I never cared much for before the

deprivation!). I avoided restaurants and turned down social invitations until

the lbs came off, which they never did. Food became my obessesion for the first

time in my life. I never cared about calories or fat grams before. I was the

fast food queen in high school - my friends used to marvel at how skinny I was

despite my food intake. It finally hit me after reading IE that I used to eat

exactly that way! When I was hungry I ate and stopped when I was full. It didn't

matter that I ate crap, I was able to stay slim, happy, and SANE, because I

ignored diets and listened to the signals.

So here I am, ready to take back what's mine. It's been up and down so far. I

have a string of good days, and not so good days and some stressors that set me

off. Winter does not help either. Chocolate needs some work as I sTILL go

overboard when I know darn well I'm full and keeping extra around seems to set

off more overeating. Glad for this community!
