HI, Ruth,

Okay, good to know. It's too bad fully accessible meters are kept out of the

general market place simply because they can't compete with giant corporations.

These meters will never have the same demand as regular meters. I'm not fond of

government subsidies, but this is a case in point where they could be useful.

Released January, 2012, this debut EBook full-length novel is about a man who

loses his sight, his struggle to find his way, and his growing attraction to a

woman who has a problem of her own. Will Zach be able to climb his mountain

again? Will Jessie find the wandering nomad she thinks she loves? Life is

complicated enough for Zach and Jessie, and a madman on the loose doesn't help.

Hi Dave and all,

I am not doing much with Prodigy meter these days, but did forward your

concerns on to Prodigy and hope it helps to fix these problems. I still

like the meter, but like yourselves wish they would fix these problems. I

will do my best to help in any way I can.

In this case it’s not that it can’t compete as much as it’s hard to make

some of the software as accessible as what’s out there and have the bells

and whistles at the same time. Not that I think that all the bells and

whistles are necessary. I don’t know about you, but when I go to the

doctor, all she has time for and is interested in is the tests and not the

rest of the hooha that some of the other meters have.

I'm not talking about competitiveness from a performance point of view, only the

cost side of the equation. I think it also has to do with the strips, and

perhaps the big name companies are producing strips in such volume, and making

that much more, they can give the big name stores much better deals. Donno.

In part that is true. On the other hand that is how the market seems to be.

For example have you ever noticed how sugar free products cost more or any

other product that takes out something or is healthier. They got us exactly

where they want us. As for the talking meters, yes they are more expensive

because there are not as many of us that need it. It is called capitalistic

greed! I was instrumental in getting the Prodigymeter down to $80.00.

Originally it was supposed to be $200.00 until I explained it to the boss

and that as disabled people, we were sick and tired of being taken advantage

of and paying for our disability which is not our fault. I also explained

in terms that he could understand as a business man, that many blind people

are on social assistance and that if you get $800.00 per month, that this

paid for food rent, etc. and that $200.00 was too expensive and no one could

afford it. He then came back with a lower price, which still made him some

money. Other followed suit but overall, manufacturers are greedy and

exploit the market for all it is worth and because we are disabled, we get

it in the neck more than others because there are not so many of us and they

do have to make their money afterall. They still haven’t seemed to figure

it out that volume will make them their money at a low price with more

people buying than keeping it a high price and not many being able to afford

it. But such is our lot in life it seems.

Hi Ruth,

I disagree about the demand and the market for talking meters.

In the past year there are more and more TV advertisements for various

providers of Diabetic supplies hawking their versions of talking meters.

With the aging Baby Boomers there is a rapidly developing market for things

which talk because folks just flat can not see what they used to be able to.

(LOLLOLLOL)

Now, this may not be true in Canada but it sure is in the United States.

No, it is not true in Canada, because there is only one, unless we are

watching a station from the US. Simple solution! Install the speech chip

in every meter, the price becomes minimal! Have a switch, and use the

option as desired! Problem solved! It doesn't take a rocket scientist!

Hi Cy,

It’s true there are more people that need it up here in Canada as well as in

the States as we all age, However, it always takes one manufacture to get

it all going and then everybody jumps on the band wagon. For example,

Accuchek was asked for YEARS for a talking meter but according to their

executives in power, there was no market. Then Prodigy made one which was

cheaper when for years and years all Accuchek had was the Voicemate and

never bothered to improve it , make it smaller, or or make it more

affordable or available in Canada! Then Prodigy showed them all different,

and everybody wants a piece of the pie! Accuchek could have had it all and

for a lot longer if they had bothered. As I said, it always takes one to

start, make their money, and then everybody jumps on the band wagon to get

their piece of the pie and then flood the market.

Good thinking ! As they say, we get too soon old and too late smart.

In the case of the manufacturers it seems like it’s a trade off greed or

Roche, had the right idea with the compact plus, it had the beeping feature,

but you had to turn it on. The problem was with the strip being too short

baking it very difficult to place the sample where it needs to be!

Good point! The thing is, the companies really don't make their money on the

meters anyway. It's the strips that create the profit.
