Hi don,

Welcome to the list! My name is Danny, and I was

diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic in 1960. I try to

control my blood glucose levels with diet and

insulin. The good news is that it can be done,

and the bad news is that it is a continual battle.

HI, Don,

I'm guessing you were diagnosed with type 2? That is, not type 1, or insulin

dependent diabetes.

Yes, some type 2's can slip out of a diagnosis by losing weight (usually) and

through a change in life style. Which might mean a change in your diet, adding

exercise, and in general, improving your health.

Tell us a little more. Do you need to loose weight? Are you type 2? Roughly how

old are you? Will making changes in your eating and adding exercise be difficult

modifications?

well sir Don, looks like you finally made it. since I know you quiet well, I

won't give all the information I know on you, if you don't tell all you know on

me. there are some mighty fine folks here on the list and they do know there

stuff. if you will just give these guys and girls a chance they will show you

the right trail to take. controlling your sugar with a diet is the best plan and

with exercise which I know you dislike as much as I do. the saw bones told me I

was a type 2 diabetic ten years ago and I know during the past ten years I have

done good as far as my diet goes only half of that time. you know very well

about my heart attack in 07 and more then likely the out of control diabetes had

a lot to do with it. I know you aren't as over weight as I, but my heart doc has

said that even 20 pounds over weight is bad for any diabetic. maybe it is lucky

for you that you were 67 when you found out you are a type 2. I was 44 and I

still haven't lost the 125 pounds that I need to. of course it is all my fault

and no one else to blame in my case. these fine folks here on the list have done

there very best to point me in the right direction, but it is simply my old bad

habits of many years of bad eating habits and the dislike of exercise that is

slowly destroying my body. If you can follow there grate advice better then I,

then you can not only control your diabetes, but you can stop it from destroying

your organs. I know you don't dig a list that has a lot of traffic and I don't

think this one does, but remember that the post here can and will save your life

if that is important to you. my A1C was 13 back in September of 2011. then the

saw bones increased my met Forman to 1000 twice a day and it has came down to

under 8 when I checked the end of December. this is better, but still not as low

as it needs to be. your A1C is I think the most important number you have and

you need to have it checked every 90 days at first. I know you won't like this

fact, but us type 2's can end up taking insulin like a type one does, if we

ignore diet and exercise. it may take ten years or so before this happens, but I

do believe from what these guys have been telling me that it does happen. I sure

would hate for you to have a heart attack like I did, because the cab fare to go

see you in the hospital would cost me a arm and a leg. best for you to do as

they tell you, so you can help me to do what I haven't done well so far. seeing

as how you are much older then me, well I know I would pay more attention to

your advice. I can talk the talk, but I haven't walked the walk yet for very

long of a stretch. I continue to fall off the wagon kind of like a alcohol or

drug attic. I'm looking for a over eaters club here on my side of the City so I

can join and that and this list may keep me in the wagon. I don't believe you

have a over eating problem as I do. you just dig eating things like pasta and

bread that are really bad for a diabetic. I know you said you would never drink

diet pop, but maybe you could try the flavored water and like it ok enough to

give up your regular Dr. Pepper?? I'm still having lots of trouble giving up my

milk and Dave tells others on the list how milk is as bad as sugar pop. he

really hurts my feelings when he says this. I know he is right because milk has

13 carbs in only a 8 ounce glass. my glass of milk at breakfast when I drink

milk holds 24 ounces. this is close to 40 carbs in just the glass of milk! I

believe there is some on this list who don't have 40 total carbs in the whole

day and I have it in just a glass of milk one time! now I know you hate milk and

this is a good thing for you. you don't like coffee, but you do like hot

chocolate. well best you give that up unless you might try the kind that has no

sugar? I think it is pretty nasty my self, but then I dig coffee and don't drink

the stuff. I'm sorry for this ramble, but I know you don't like rambling your

self, how ever these guys need to know some about you and this post tells about

us both. you and I both live in OKC and have been buds for at least 20 years. Cy

is also on the diabetic list and you may know him as well. I think there is a

few more, but can't be sure if you know them well.

Hi Dave:

Yes, I am type 2, just having been diagnosed two weeks ago. I am 68 as of

Feb. 25. I have given up Dr. Pepper and other soft drinks, which is tough.

My new favorite drink is water.

I have started exercising on treadmill and stationary bike, which I hate.

But, listening to my Plextalk or tape player makes it less boring.

I hope to lose 50 pounds. My nutritionist has given me guidelines on diet.

And, my good friend Mark has given me a list as long as my arm of things I

shouldn't eat. It makes it really hard when the foods I love are no no's

and the foods that are " so called " good, like salads and raw veggies, I

can't stand.

Don,

Depending on your personality, I might advise you not feel you have to " fix "

everything at once.

Take time to adjust to a new life-style. You can expect to be quite healthy in

the years to come, and rushing into your new way of living will not be greatly

effected, whether you adjust over the course of a year, or 2, or even 3 years.

The main thing is to make changes that stick. Flash in the pan adjustments will

accomplish nothing. Consider this new season in your life as stepping up a rung.

Unlike people without diabetes, who give little thought to long term health, and

who can continue over-indulging in high sugar foods and all the unhealthy foods

out there, you have now gained wisdom and knowledge. You are able to ask for

diet Dr. Pepper as you step up to the counter, or sit in a restaurant, knowing

you are the smart one. It's the people who go on day after day, eating ten times

as many calories and carbohydrates as they need, who are unfortunately in the

dark.

Thanks Dave:

Well, I dropped Dr. Pepper awhile before I was diagnosed. Maybe I saw the

writing on the wall so to speak. I'll probably never ask for a diet Dr.

Pepper because I don't like the taste. The only diet drink I like is water.

(smile)

I have several relatives and friends who are diabetic and I was married to a

type 1 for a while. So, It's not a total shock.

Thanks to all who responded to my message. Sounds like a friendly bunch on

this list.

We drink diet soda in our house. Our son prefers it over the much sweeter

regular soda. If you don't mind going without Dr. Pepper, then you're good to

go. But, in time, and it might take many months, you might find you don't mind

diet soda if you stick with it.

A key word is moderation. I probably drink 2 sodas a month. The fears you hear

concerning sugar-free products are most of the time built on this or that study

showing how rats who consumed 800 gallons of Dr. Pepper in one day died.

I like that stuff my self, but if I drink to much in a day my cramps in my

legs and feet that night are really bad. I've noticed when I go a few days with

out drinking any at all, my cramps aren't bad at all and some nights not at all.

can't say for sure if it is the drink that causes the cramps to be worse or what

ever else. but I do think there is some kind of a connection.

I like it because it's only 5 calories per glass, and I usually always have a

I will pay more attention, though about cramps.

Hi Mark and Don and All,

I have not given up entirely on milk. But I try to keep it around a half

cup and sometimes splurge and have a cup in a day, so 4 to 8 ounces and the

milk is 2 percent.

I am in the blind weight watchers group too but that has more traffic than

this group does. But there are very nice people in both groups and I need

the encouragement. I just weighed myself tonight after about a week and a

half and I weigh 167.4 pounds. I think I should probably lose about 30 or

35 pounds. But sometimes I just get discouraged. I have kept portion

control down pretty well but still find I am having a piece of candy or a

cookie here and there. Lora

I always thought diet soda or pop as we call it tasted weird and it had an

after taste. But I have found the cola is not too bad and the ginger ale is

good too. Around the Detroit area we get Vernor's and its diet one is not

half bad. When was in the hospital they had a real small can of pop

in the nurses' station called Shasta I think. I can't find it in the

stores. Of course in February and March of last year I had the regular

because I didn't know I was a diabetic. But when he went back to the

hospital in July I asked them for the diet one and it was good. These were

8 ounce cans of pop I think or 6, they are like regular pop cans but half

size. But I get the Vernor's or the Faygo in the 2 liter bottles and I can

make them last 3 or 4 days, where before I was going through 1 to 1 1/2 of

those big bottles a day of regular Big K or Faygo pop of various flavors.

No matter how far off the wagon I get I have never gone back to that since

becoming a diabetic, or at least finding out.

That's probably the biggest thing I did for my health and for my finances.

They were only about 80 cents when I got Big K but I had so many of them.

Now some weeks I forget to tell my brother to get it and I just make Crystal

Light and have a little milk or chocolate milk. I know it is never going to

be as bad for me as all that regular pop day in and day out.
