The dial will no longer twist. I know about how long a pen will last, and when

I'm on the last day, I click the units I'll need before I take the shot to make

sure I don't run out at the time I need it. I'll discard a pen if it only clicks

2 units, but I'm loathe to waste any more than that.

Knowing When a Pen is empty

Hi.

I am Sharlene Kraft. My husband Bob and I are both blind and we have become

the caretakers of my sighted brother who is a diabetic. He has had two strokes

so his movement is limited.

We have been learning more about diabetes than we knew before.

He takes Lantus daily and Humilog before meals, both by pen.

The question we have is how to know when the pen is empty. Does the dial stop

turning when there are no more units, or can it keep turning and not giving any

units.

Thanks for the answer to this, and I'm blad to be here.

Sharlene.

In both pens either Humalog or Lantus the dosage knob will not turn no further

when it reaches the end of the units of insulin in the pen with the exception

being the maximum dose at any one time is 60 units of insulin per dose.If you

can turn the knob for 60 clicks, there may be more insulin in the pen.If you can

turn the dosage knob for only 59 clicks, there is no more insulin in the

pen. Before injecting a dose it is important to prime the needle usually

requiring two clicks of the pen, then pointing it toward your palm and pressing

the knob downward. When you feel the drop of insulin on your palm the needle is

primed. Now click the knob the number of units you need for a dose, then

inject.Sometimes the initial use of a needle may require five or six clicks of

the knob before the needle is primed. The purpose of priming the needle is to

prevent the injection of air, when what you want is the insulin.hth, Harry

Thanks Harry and Dave, I'm glad to know that.

Welcome Charlene. That is quite a responsibility. Is your brother able to

move at all or talk?
