Guest guest
If you are going to eat within 15 minutes of your injection, you should give it before eating. This way, the insulin will start working about the same time the carbs you eat start entering your blood stream. Pumps can be prescribed for anyone, but if you are on MediCare, they sometimes deny pumps for type 2 people. There are ways to get around this and your prescribing doctor or the pump vendoer can tell what has to be done. I am totally blind and use a pump and other people on this list have pumps also. _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Sharon Lash Sent: Friday, March 02, 2012 7:34 AM To: diabetics Subject: About Insulin Shots I would like to know does it matter if you take the shots before or after meals? Guest guest
I will admit, I never inject my Humalog before I eat. I do however take it immediately when finished. This is because waiting allows me to be assured of what I've eaten, so I match my insulin more precisely with my food intake. Perhaps technically, my bg spikes for a few minutes as I am eating, without having the benefit of the Humalog, but in all the years I've been treating my t1 this way, and in particular, in recent years, I have had excellent A1C's usually a little above or a little under 6.0. Guest guest
If your BG is too h igh at bedtime, you need extra insulin to get it down to a normal level. Many diabetics (and non-diabetics) have a rise in BG in the early morning. It is called the dawn effect. If your BG at night is high, it will then be higher in the morning. An insulin pump is is about the size of a deck aof cards. There is cartridge in it that holds about 300units of insulin. At one end a small bump sticks out of it. That is where you attach the tubing. The tubind has a very thin catheter on the end, which gets inserted into someplace on your body (usually the abdomen) The pump is programmed to constantly put small amounts of insulin into your body, as your pancreas does. There are several buttons on the pump which are used for progaming the ppum and one button is used so you can give yourself extra insulin (called a bolus) when you eat any carbs. It is very important that you learn to count carbs when eating. My pump which is from the Roesch company, is a transluscent blue. But they come in other colors and there are several pump companies in the US. _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Sharon Lash Sent: Saturday, March 03, 2012 3:40 PM To: blind-diabetics Subject: Re: About Insulin Shots What is the purpose of taking insulin before bedtime?
