I can only speak for myself here, but I find that once I put the fork down, all the feelings/emotions I had been numbing myself out of experiencing via overeating began to come up. I wept a lot and did a lot of grieving over my childhood, etc. etc. I find that compulsive eating arrested my development, and giving the behavior up required a period of time needed to "catch up to myself".
