Guest guest
Ever since I started Valtrex with Difflucan I noticed a slight paralysis on one side around my sons mouth and cheek area. I had stopped both meds after a month hopeing it would go away but 2 months later he still has it. It's most noticible when he's trying to speak.I googled it and found Bells Palsey a viral condition or Ramsey Hunt (a dormant Chicken Pox outbreak). Is there anything I could do to restore his facial paralysis he's only 3 years old, will this be permanent should I go back to Valtrex to see if it will reverse it...Where's Cheryl these days? Guest guest
Is he on methyl b? This happened to my husband about 9 years ago. (Not surprisingly, right before I became pregnant with my pdd....hm....) He was freaking out - docs told him to try to keep excercising it - that's all he could do. He just happened to come upon a website - the lady there recommened high dose methyl b12 and it worked like a charm. Within two days, he had complete recovery.(this was so long ago, little did we know back then that we'd be reintroduced to it all these years later!) Guest guest
I'm here! :)My suggestion is to take him to a doctor. Don't assume because something happened at the same time you started valtrex that it was the valtrex. There are many things that can cause paralysis - some which aren't pretty. He should see a doctor. It might be viruses, it might not. At 3 years old, I can't imagine anyone won't take this seriously and will do a full work up. If it is Bell's Palsy - it's most definitely possible, I'm not trying to give you the impression that it's not, I don't know - then I would think that antivirals would be even more important to your son because this is typically from an HHV, although not always.*Anytime* something like this happens, see a doctor immediately, I can't stress that enough. The first thing they do with BP in children is treat inflammation ASAP. It works best in the first week of onset and valtrex is actually a *treatment* - so taking him off may have been a mistake. The valtrex may have actually been helping and you saw Bell's Palsy as a sign of getting to the virus in the brain. We can't assume anything with our kids. As much as we know as parents, we still aren't doctors. Paralysis is serious enough that you should see a doctor immediately when you notice.I don't mean to sound like I'm giving you your licks. I just want people to understand that if something seems serious - treat it seriously and go to a doctor. Don't think you can diagnose and treat on your own. It may be nothing - and most of the time it is, but it's not worth the risk if it's not or if the plan of action you would take isn't the right one. At the very least, call your DAN if you have one. You may see an idiot for a doctor or it might be a complete waste of time because there's nothing you can do but it's better to waste *your* time than it is to *waste time*. Bell's Palsy typically resolves. In some cases it doesn't and requires rehab. But I would seriously consider talking to a doctor and putting him back on valtrex and probably adding an anti-inflammatory, assuming it's BP.I hope it gets better soon and I really am sorry that you have to go through this. It sucks. Cheryl ~http://www.gryffins-tail.blogspot.com~~@Gryffins_Tail~ Ever since I started Valtrex with Difflucan I noticed a slight paralysis on one side around my sons mouth and cheek area. Guest guest
Thanks so much everyone for all your helpful replies!!!!Question: How could my little 3 year old catch Lyme disease? We're not outdoorsey people.Hi Cheryl,As always, thxs so much for your advise. I will say, looking back I guess I panicked! Last Dec. my son turned 3, started Pre-School, he caught Croup cough virus, the skin on his stomach had a big rough patch, he had a constant runny nose, then caught Bronchitus and all of the kids in his class were consistently sick. His Pediatrician Dr put him on a Antiviral medicine called Tammi Flu, then a Steroid, then a Nebulizer followed by an antibiotic. Just got crazy, the Dr asked to stop Valtrex Difflucan while on the meds he prescribed, so I stopped everything, including the vitamins, probiotics, B12 shots, Gluthadione Transdermal cream Enhansa...just stopped it all, he was so sick, cranky from all the meds. Oh and the constant fevers, it was just insane he couldn't catch a break. I just wanted his little body to take a break from it all. The antibiotics was scary, because he hadn't gotten any in his whole 2 year old of life, nor any vaccinations...I just don't trust anything anymore! The paralysis on his face would come and go...it's not as visible but when he trys to pronounce certain words he twists his mouth...best described like Popeye and he locks his jaw, kind of like the old fashioned wolfman. I'm constantly massaging his little face jaw and have an appt with the Neurologist next week....not sure how they'll help but he's always day dreaming often and I'm hoping they aren't mini seizures. I've stopped all vitamins, probiotics, difflucan Valtrex for 3 months now...have lost faith in what I'm doing. My DAN's prices have gone up to $300 per hour!!!! + all the tests they want us to do would all come out to $900. Plus all the ABA therapies at $500 per month, all on one income...can't help but think how hard it was for you everyone else on this forum! Someone on this forum mentioned Parasites may be a possibilities and Google mentioned it could be Ramsey Hunt, dormant meassles or chicken pox. Not sure where to go from here??? I have been looking at this GAPs diet which sounds promissing. Again, I wish I knew whom to turn to or where to go from here....I'm feeling like I'm running out of gas...thanks again for your response. Guest guest
I mean the blood work a DAN would run but that a regular pediatrician would poo-poo as being unnecessary. Know what I mean?I mean, I had a hard time getting my ped to run a CBC on my kid, and he had bruised up legs that resembled petechiae, for goodness sake; he only did a physical exam when my son was two and complained of penis pain (should have been referred to a urologist or pee test run)!! Guest guest
Hi Irma,My son did the Valtrex/Flucanozole trial and developed pain in his hands and feet. He also had some spasm in his arms. We stopped both medication immediately but the pain in his hands and feet lasted for several months after that. The spasm didn't occur again. It was less and less frequent and intense as time went by.Theses side effects are not listed in the typical side effects of Flucanozole/Diflucan but deep in their website I saw that similar symptoms were recorded during clinical trials. It sounds different from what your son is experiencing but wanted to mention it, just in case.My son improved a lot on Valtrex but we had to stop because of all the serious side-effects he was experiencing. The Valtrex gave him serious gastro-intestinal problems. We have been doing the GAPS diet for a little over 2 weeks now and stopped all supplements and DAN protocol treatments. At first my son regressed but in the last few days he is much better. Not as good as on the Valtrex but I am hoping that he will continue to improve.I highly recommend reading Dr. -McBride's book: The Gut and Psychology Syndrome. From all the book I read (and I read many of them), it's the one I found most convincing. Gen Irma- You should to join the Pecanbread group,it is for those on SCD,those in the group post lots of recipes, questions etc.We did SCD for a little while I do think it works but it was too much work for me. I do plan to give a shot agin in a couple of months.I have met several parents who had great results on SCD. I find the GAPS Diet to be a more updated version of the SCD Diet with a detox introduction diet followed by lots of home made veggies, yogurts, Keifer, dried fruits, animal fats, nuts, homemade meat fish stocks and juicing included. The Diet was introduced by Dr Natasha Cambell McBride, a Russian Neurologist who started a family in the UK to then find out her son was diagnosed with Autism. She then got her Degree in Nutritional Science and helped recover her son. She also pays honorable tribute to the late Ms Gottschal Dr Haas whom shared the healing benefits of the SCD diet. Her theory is to detox the gut, followed my healing it, sealing it and she recommends this diet for two years and then slowly introduce starchy carbs, Dairy, Wheats...etcYou can google her on Utube. My gut feeling (no pun intended) tells me to go this route. She recommends minimal vitamins, and no meds because she says the foods themselves will help heal and naturally eleminate the toxic pathogens in the gut lining.I'm quite new to this diet but feel I've plateaued with GF/CF diet.
