Guest guest
Hi Mark and Becky, I found out on June 13 of 2011 and it has not helped that I am under so much stress because of taking care of . And my right ankle hurts with this arthritis or whatever it is on the inside of it. It hurts a lot less when that swelling goes down. The doctor said just try to keep off it and keep it elevated. You said it very well, Mark and I feel bad about your sister. You only can pray for her because she won't listen to your advice. I have a sip or two of Schnapps once in a while. That is about all the alcohol I ever take since I found out. I just like the flavor of the butterscotch or peach and I also like coffee flavored liqueur and we have one something like Kahlua but not so expensive. Guest guest
lets see now, when was the last time I only weighed 167. got to really get the old memory to kick in some gears that are rusty. ok the memory is starting to slowly pick up some waves from long long long ago. maybe my twenty's? no I don't believe I was this little. lets see now. I smell something burning? I think the old rusted memory is over working it self and may be fixen to over heat! got to go farther back in time! can't see this weight in my teens. wait! now I seem to be getting a far away picture of a fat little pig of a boy out on a wrestling mat. yes it is so! I believe now this for sure is me and I had to cut some weight in order to move down to wrestle a lower weight because of the boy there moving down a weight as well. seems like the read out on my over heated memory bank is saying 1973 or is that a 2? well we will go with 72 to be on the safe side. now lets do the math. 1972 until to day of 2012 is? 12 plus 28 equals? 40??? no way! this answer can't be correct! this means the last time I weighed 167 was when I was 15? now my head is on fire! I think my old tired memory bank has over loaded and is melting down! got to go stick my fat pig head in a bucket of cold water fast! Guest guest
one won't hurt that bad at all. actually if you can only have one and be happy with out having more, then more power to you. back in the bad old days, I thought if one was good, then put as many in your mouth as you could fit and the taste was even better! then I figured out that doing it all day long was enjoyable as well. this action did require me to buy a whole bag that would only last one day and two if I was lucky. can you now see how many bad habits from over eating I picked up through the years? Guest guest
I use to smoke off and on, but more off then on. did enjoy pot or grass if you wish to call it that. really enjoyed getting high or stoned if that sounds better. of course this was back in the late 70's that I lived this way. use to think my feet couldn't touch the floor until I had burned one and my head was clear to think straight. What a pile of poop was I thinking back then! haven't got stoned now for more then 30 years. don't miss it a lick. do enjoy my memories of those days though, because now they don't cause me to feel out of control like I felt then. alcohol has never been a problem for me. grass never made me throw up down my leg or on my shoes. grass never gave me a hang over or made my breath smell like a dirty john. a cigarette is what I always enjoyed when having a beer. what smokes were left in the pack when the bar closed got left on the talbe. no beer, no need for a cigarette. glad to hear you have seen the need to give the bad habit up. I say just suck on your thumb instead when you feel like a smoke. it really helps and you won't do it in front of other people because of what they might think or say. I tried it when I decided to give up grass and it really did help me stop craving the joint in my mouth and in my hand. crazy! I know it sounds crazy, but dain if it didn't help me! Guest guest
Hi Mark And Becky, I tried that grass a few times and it never did anything at all. I felt like I had well...hair in my mouth and I never liked the smell of it. Once in a while I smoked one of 's cigarettes and in the summer when he was cutting the grass (the one that grows in the ground outside, haha) I liked how the cut grass smelled and would take a drag from his cigarette and sip of his beer. But then I would not do it for a year or more. I have had no desire for any kind of smoke in years. finally had to quit smoking last year when he got sick. He says he still wishes he had one sometimes. I like how that awful smell does not hang in the air now. Best of luck on your battle with smoking, I have heard that it is stronger than alcohol or drug addiction to overcome. Guest guest
Yes, I know how that is because I always had to have two or three burgers or tacos or pieces of pizza or fried chicken. Now I take one and am satisfied because the alternative is to have none. Guest guest
Haha I weighed no more than 130 until I was 30 and then after my son was born I started gaining. I got as far as 190 I think in 2002. But I am only 5 feet 5, actually a little short of that. I have been keeping from 161 to 169 since I have been monitoring for the last 9 months since I got my talking scale. Guest guest
now stress, panic and that thing they call ainziadie, will I bet I messed that spelling all kinds of up! well any way when stress inters our life for many reasons it will mess with our sugar and not in the good way. I always recall what I read in a book one time along time ago when I felt like the whole sky wished to set on my fat head and push me in to the ground like a stick. God's will won't send you, where his Grace won't protect you. this helped me a lot back then and it still does when I remind my self what it means. some times life does throw everything it has directly at us to see what we are made of. I use to think it couldn't get any worse then I was having it at that moment, but life would show me that it certainly could get worse and it threw more life at me to prove a point. When my Momma had Alzheimer's for 2 years right at the same time I had my heart attack was a very stressful time in my life. everything was out of wack including my mind, but made it through and here I sit! all 325 of me. well probably less then that now, but not going to jump on the scales every day like lots of folks do to know for certain. 325 sounds better to me so when I do weigh in April I would have lost a bigger amount between weigh in times. it is all in your head and this will make my head be loud and proud! Guest guest
Hi Becky, That would be good. If you want, try and find my group and come and join. Maybe we can get some more diabetic recipes in there. It is called My Telespace Recipe Classics. It is moderated so I may take a while to approve your request because I am lazier than they come and do not always log into the system every day, LOL. Guest guest
I think you are doing a great job because of the many things you have to overcome. It makes the things I call problems seem rather small. Keep up the good work. Guest guest
I know for sure that I for many years was a huge over eater. why I thought I had to eat until I felt sick is plum out of my ability to know. hamburgers I could always eat a triple meat, large fries and a large shake and not think I was full. one time when tacos were on sell for 17 cents each, I ordered 100 and ate 57 of them before I stopped to catch my breath. ever ate a whole skillet of fried potatoes? I use to do this when ever I was up set. cookies? who can have a few cookies and be happy? not this pig! I always opened the package and ate it all before I stopped. hotdogs? I believed that the reason why there was 8 buns and 8 wieners was because it mint you eat them all and I did. pancakes? there is a casino here in OKC that has a big boy's breakfast is the name of it. a six egg omelet, six strips of bacon, pile of hashbrowns, 4 large buttermilk biscuits with large bowl of gravy and 3 plate size pancakes. I ate the whole breakfast many times in the past ten years as a diabetic! how crazy and immature is this? I'm the only one to blame for anything and everything that is wrong with my health at this time. I know this is so and it may be to late to stop what is coming down the road, but still I will give it my best shot to do what I should have done ten years ago. we don't know what to morrow will bring, but we do have control over to day and right now! I have to laugh and cry about things I've done that were stupid or I wouldn't be doing well now. I certainly can't change all those days of eating enough to feed at least 25 hungry people in a third world country, but I can only eat enough now for my health and still maybe feed a few people right here in OKC that don't have enough to eat. I know now with out a doubt, that when I was eating all I wanted and didn't care a flip about my health, I was being a very self centered and selfish man. it was all about only me and the hell with the rest of the world. this was my attitude and I didn't even know it during all that time. I see it now for what it was and the truth of it looks right back at me and only me. my attitude to day is, I want to be thin, I desire to no longer be over weight, I desire to eat only enough to live healthy, I won't ever again eat all I want of anything, I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired, I dislike my huge belly, I will remove my thick belly by hard work and good habits, I will take it one day at a time, I will plan each meal before I eat it, I will check my sugar at least 4 times a day and write it down, I will continue to Pray for strength from my God, I will exercise every day unless I'm sick, I will have a good attitude, I won't hate my self if I fall off the wagon to day, because I will get back on the wagon again to day, I will listen to those more that have been down the same path I'm on now, I will continue to mark down each day that goes by that I done it right, I simply will, because for so long I wouldn't! I can assure you all it is in the attitude that we have when we set off to get anything done and be a success at it. if you start by thinking I hate to give up the food I love, or I hate to exercise, or no one understands the things I'm going through and dealing with, or I can't drive, so I can't go walking like they can, or I have no way at home to exercise right, or no one cares or loves me, or I'm just to weak and have no will power, or the best one I said a lot was, I've tried all the different diets and none of them work for long. these kinds of attitudes from the get go is why we all never make it or can be successful. it is the attitude that must be right on in the beginning and nothing else really matters. see this word diet? what kind of bull is this for real? of course a diet don't work! a diet won't work because it is only a quick fix and not a change of habit. we have to change the whole life style habits for ever, for as many more years as we live. it is a life style change that has to happen if you or I are going to be a success at anything. the title diet that all these people use to sale you there quick fix pill or what have you is very miss leading. your diet is how you eat every day of your life. if you are a over eater like I was, then my diet was over eating. if you eat to live and make good eating choices, then your diet is a diet of living healthy. it all starts and ends with our attitude. my attitude for the past ten years would smell up a garbage dump because it smelled this bad! if we blame others and blame the folks around us, then this is because our attitude smells really bad. sour and smelly is how it smells. my fat pig head had to just about buy the farm one night 2 weeks back before my attitude got connected with what was true and real with me before I figured it all out in a split second of time. when my ticker was jumping around in my chest like a herd of butter flies my bad attitude took a hike and I don't give a flip where it got off to, I'm just thankful to God that sucker is gone from my life! now that my attitude is now right and on board with what I know is right to do and what must be done to be a success, it has been easy to maintain and not fall off the wagon. the path now that I travel is wide and easy to walk over because my attitude is where it needs to be. a bad attitude will cause you to change your daily good habits and do stupid things to make room for those things you think you can't live with out, but the right attitude causes you to continue to do what you know is right and you will continue to make good eating choices and the rest will take the back seat instead. in my case, it was very simple when my life flashed before me. change my attitude to the right one or die. I love all you guys and I personally know none of you. I would love to get to meet you all some day in person and hug your necks. lots of you on this life have in different ways saved my life from what direction I was going. I've been on list before that decided to have a get together and have a little reunion so they could put a face or voice with a name. I haven't been a part of one yet that I didn't enjoy my self. maybe now that my attitude is where it needs to be, maybe one day in the future this group can as well plan and make a list reunion happen. it doesn't cost as much as you might think and when you got time to plan and save for it? well you can make it happen. where there is a will, there is always a way. Guest guest
Good luck with your battle with smoking. My sister, who was 6 years younger than me, died of COPD 3 years ago because she could not give up smoking. Even after starting on oxygen, she would unhook it and smoke. She finally stopped, but it was too late by then. I quit smoking when I was 34 and was going blind from the diabetes. I smoked about a pack a week. The swelling n the legs is caused by s moking because smoking blocks up your arteries so the blood flow is compromised. _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Becky McCullough Sent: Saturday, March 17, 2012 5:08 AM To: blind-diabetics Subject: Re: Things I have learned I just gave up cigarettes. I've smoked on and off, but I miss it, but I sure don't miss the coughing and the smell. I heard that smoking causes swelling in the legs. I went back to smoking in the summer of 2010 and really started again in December of 2011. I have quit before. I hope to stay off for good this time. I just put one in my mouth and suck on it until it finally gets too small and dissipates. I probably do that once or twice a week and also my husband has those fruit slice gumdrops and once in a while when my mouth and throat feel really dry I pop one of those in my mouth and it takes sometimes ten minutes for it to finally get small where I can swallow it. I do not really know how much sugar one of those tiny pieces of candy have but I figure one of those would prevent me from eating a small meal that would contain a lot more. Guest guest
That is if the candy is made with sorbitol or mannitol! Not a nice consequence of too much of that. _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Mark Ruth Sent: Saturday, March 17, 2012 4:19 AM To: blind-diabetics Subject: Re: Things I have learned now here is what you do. if the company is staying just a bit longer then you wish and you are ready for them to leave, but they have decided to just stay until dinner. you eat the whole bag of that sugar free candy and relax. in a small amount of time the sugar free will hit you and then they will be more then happy to leave your home in a big hurry! works every time! take it from the pig who knows it does for a fact. folks just simply move away from you and can't seem to get far enough away to fast. Things I have learned I have been a foodie and a diabetc for many many years. I managed to learn a few things along the way- hopefully they will help someone else to learn from my mistakes instead of the hard way !! Whatever you call them- sodas, soft drinks, Cokes, refrescos, root beer, dr pepper , mountain dew sprite, crush - they are EVIL !!! No matter if they are diet or sugar free or straight up, they all have harmful chemicals that can suppress your immune system. They are also addictive. Avoid them and train yourself to love water, teas, coffee, or aguas frescas. Aguas frescas are infusiions made from flowers or fruit. They are more natural and have less sugar than straight juice. When you have something to eat, think about the fiber content. In my experience, if you have something at night with fiber in it there is less likelihood of you crashing from low blood sugar. If there is something you LOVE to eat but it has too much anything, look for a substitute. For example, if you like pickles, lets say... sweet pickles, a better option would be sour dills becaue they are not made with sugar. But if you think dills have too much salt, make your own refrigerator dills which dont need the salt for preservation. Or make a fresh pickle of cucumbers, onion, vinegar and olive oil. and mebeb some hot pepper flakes if you like hot things. Hot peppers are good for making you feel happy due to their endorphin content and are also high in viatmin C and make you feel satisfied as well as pepping up the taste buds. When possible avoid processed foods. You dont need the hidden chemicals or salts or sugars. Homeade tastes better, is cheaper and fresher as well and you can make it to your own taste. Some examples are mustard, blender mayonnaise, salsa, salad dressings like ranch or blue cheese or italian ot french. Try to find textures that mimic those of the things you like but are not good for you, like kale chips instead of potato chips, or sweet potato fries instead of white potato fries, steamed tacos instead of hard-fried ones. Little changes add up yo a big difference ! Often, dialysis patients have high phosphorus (vitamin K) leves in their blood and this cases them to be unable to et many things we all love like chocolate and cheese. I have learned to use cream cheese instead my preferred cheese on burgers or in pasta or sandwiches or other things. Whole wheat pasta is better than regular pasta because is has fiber and your body needs that fiber to ruminate on. Whole wheat crackers and cookies are better. Instead of sugar syrup, use agave nectar or just a sprinkle of cinnamon on waffles, etc. Use the pure fruit spreads instead of jelly, or at least preserves which have more fiber thn jelly and have a great texture. Instead of relying on salt for taste use other spices or a squeeze of lime or lemon or a spritz of vinegar. If you feel the need to put something in your mouth, suck on ice. Take one bite at a time, chew it deliberately, and dont pick up another bite until you have swallowed the previous one. Thank God for each bite or sip a you take it. If you MUST have cake or pie, choose one with fruit and/or nuts for the fiber in it. I am not a dietician nor a doctor, just a lay diabetic who wants to help others avoid the pirfalls I have experienced. We all need a little sugar, just choose your poison wisely. Guest guest
A sip or toor a bite or two of something you like is okay-at least the way you are doing it. _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Lora Leggett Sent: Friday, March 16, 2012 8:03 PM To: blind-diabetics Subject: Re: Things I have learned I really like buttermilk biscuits but don't like drinking it. When I was a child I hated white milk and liked only chocolate. Then when I was pregnant with Debbie they gave me about 9 half gallons of milk on this program I was on called WIC and I thought what the hell am I going to do with 9 half gallons of milk? I did not know Mark to give it to, LOL. Well, all of a sudden I started to like it and although I still like chocolate milk and milk shakes, the white tastes pretty good when it is cold. Well I did go over to 2 percent in recent years. But I heard somewhere in the discussions that we could have half a cup in a day. So I just take a big sip sometimes when making his shakes and I don't pour myself a glass ever. My problem is I do not want to face up to the fact of not having certain foods I like so I just have a oittle taste of this or that. It satisfies the craving without giving me much of it. I do get the Shaky Willies when my blood sugar is not high. Guest guest
I would truly say it is about time I found my way! hard to figure why some folks have to always take the hard way to do easy things? when I pass from this world in to heaven some day, first thing I will find out is why this was so in my case. might get a answer like, you never matured until you were the double nickel! Things I have learned > > > > I have been a foodie and a diabetc for many > > many years. > > > > I managed to learn a few things along the > > way- hopefully they will help someone else > > to learn from my mistakes instead of the > > hard way !! > > > > Whatever you call them- sodas, soft drinks, > > Cokes, refrescos, root beer, dr pepper , mountain dew sprite, > > crush - they are EVIL !!! > > > > No matter if they are diet or sugar free or > > straight up, they all have harmful chemicals > > that can suppress your immune system. > > > > They are also addictive. > > > > Avoid them and train yourself to love water, > > teas, coffee, or aguas frescas. Guest guest
stopped smoking in February of 2011 when he got sick. He never smoked until he was 26 and it was shortly before Debbie was born. One of the things I liked about him when we were dating is that he was a nonsmoker. So he smoked about 31 years. Cigarettes were getting so expensive.
