You need to educate your insurance company. If in fact you need the fully

audible meter like the Prodigy Voice. As far as I know, the Prodidgy Voice is no

more expensive then the Autocode at the retail level, but no matter, if you need

a fully audible meter, you can get it covered by talking to the right people.

You might need something from your doctor as I think about it.

Prodigy Meter

Hi Everyone, well as I've said I would, I went to the Diabetes Expo, and

talked to the guys at my pharmacy there. I asked if, I could change my meter to

the Prodigy Auto Code. Seeing my insurance only covers that meter. To make a

long story short, when I got hone, my Accu-Chek testing supplies were waiting

for me. I'll have to wait and see what happens.

You should be able to get the PV with no trouble. Assuming you have sufficient

sight loss and can not read a screen, have your doctor write a letter for your

insurance provider. By law, you qualify for a fully audible meter such as the

Prodidgy Voice.

Hi , I keep hearing that, " Prodigy Voice is the best or, second best

talking meter there is " . But, I don't need a talking meter, just one that

displays both, the time and date in larger or, bolder type.

I guess it depends on the Insurance company, but under my Humana Gold Plus

plan, the Prodigy Voice is fully covered with no co-pay as are the strips.

The only diabetic supply I have a co-pay for are the Lantus Solo Star pens

and that’s only $7 for a box of 5.

Rick,

You have a great plan. I have to pay a $45 co-pay for my Humalog pens for a box

of 5 (a 30-day prescription,) but for the Lantus Solo pens, since I only take 10

units per day, I have to pay for a 90-day co-pay of about $150 for a box of 5

pens. And, I also will probably be paying 15% or 20% co-pay for strips when I

change suppliers the next time I get supplies.

What's your monthly premium, if you don't mind me asking?

Dave,

It’s taken directly out of my SSDI check every month. As I recall, it’s

around $98 or so. I’ve noticed with these Humana HMO plans, coverage and

co-pays can really vary from one area to another. Not sure how they come up

with their criteria but the co-payments here in Broward county Florida where

I am can be different from say Orlando Florida. I do agree however that

it’s a great plan. I’ve had Humana Gold Plus since about 1995. I’ve never

had an issue with them and coverage has always been very good.

I don’t pay anything additional. Maybe you should check out Humana Gold

Plus. True, it’s an HMO, not PPO, but the coverage is great and not bad at

all if you find a good primary care physician. My doctor is part of a group

called Continued Care that will even provide transportation if you need it.

Check out Humana, you have nothing to lose.

Dave,

I’m no expert, but the main difference is that with a PPO, you are free to

choose any doctor you want as long as they accept your plan, and you don’t

ever have to get a referral to see any specialist you want. With an HMO,

you have your primary care which you are free to choose as long as they are

within the plan’s network. Same with specialists, they have to be in the

plan’s network but in some cases you need a referral first which normally

has never been a problem for me. Same goes for pharmacies and other

services. They have to be in-network.

Subject: Re: Prodigy Meter

I can't change plans until the fall, and that will be for next year's plan.

I will definitely look into Humana /Gold. I've actually been with them at

one point, but it wasn't a Gold plan as I recall.

My plan is a PPO. What's the difference between this and an HMO?

Prodigy Meter

Hi Everyone, well as I've said I would, I went to the Diabetes Expo, and

talked to the guys at my pharmacy there. I asked if, I could change my meter

to the Prodigy Auto Code. Seeing my insurance only covers that meter. To

make a long story short, when I got hone, my Accu-Chek testing supplies were

waiting for me. I'll have to wait and see what happens.
