Guest guest
The link isn't working for me. I feel like they're similar but BPD favors emotional demandingness whereas N favors superiority demandingness. If that makes sense! Guest guest
The link works but you have to copy the second line in all the way up to the php: http://www.narcissisticpersonalitydisorder.yolasite.com/are-you-involved-with-a-\ narcissist.php I find the narcissistic difference is that they are more in control, more emotionally developed but of course massively self-centered. The borderline is more childlike and their manipulations come from that place, but the narcissist is more " you will, slave! Guest guest
I like the way different " flavors " of bpd were broken down in " Understanding the Borderline Mother " . That book covered the multiplicity of behaviors well, by combining bpd traits with other personality-disordered traits: " Hermit " = Borderline pd + Avoidant pd " Waif " = Borderline pd + Dependent pd " Queen " = Borderline pd + Narcissistic pd " Witch " = Borderline pd + Antisocial pd (earlier referred to as both " sociopathic pd " and " psychopathic pd " ) I agree that the " Hermits " and the " Waifs " will appear to be more childlike, and the " Queen " will demand to be put first and will treat other people like servants, but there is nothing " childlike " about the " Witch " . My nada displayed borderline diagnostic trait #8: " Inappropriate anger or difficulty controlling anger (e.g., frequent displays of temper, constant anger, recurrent physical fights) " and #6: " Affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood (e.g., intense episodic dysphoria, irritability or anxiety usually lasting a few hours and only rarely more than a few days) " and #2 " A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation " more than any of the other traits. I think of her as a " Queen/Witch " . It seems to me that a low-functioning " Waif " bpd (can't keep a job, frequently suicidal, negligent and/or exploitative mother, emotionally and financially dependent on children) is so different behaviorally from a high-functioning " Queen/Witch " bpd, (well-thought-of at her job / in pubic, but has unrealistic expectations of marriage and parenthood, displays resentment, hostility and jealousy towards others (you're either a servant or a rival) and is physically violent and emotionally abusive toward those who are smaller, weaker, or dependent on her, in private) that they might as well be different disorders. I hope that when the American Psychiatric Association revises the next edition of their Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, they'll break down bpd traits by high-functioning and low functioning, and by the Queen, Witch, Hermit, Waif co-morbidities, creating a more workable checklist for determining a diagnosis. -Annie > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Below is a great checklist to see if the person you think has BPD really > > > > > has > > > > > BPD AND narcissistic disorder. Guest guest
Even though my mother does fit some of the characterisitcs of narcisism, it doesnt feel quite like her. I dont thing she really thinks she is more capable/better/more intelligent than everyone around her, I think this is just what she wants OTHERS to think. She thinks if others think this, they will want her around and think she is important. This seems to be apparent in her complete avoidance of anyone who doesnt think such of her. I think that makes her uncomfortable, and she is afraid of being exposed as a fraud - a narcisist wouldnt be afraid of that, as they truely beleive they are the ducks nuts. Ive seen her at dinner parties with people who dont like her/call her on her lies - she squirms like a paedophile in church. Mums main concern in life is her " reputation " , what others think of her - more importantly, that they respect her immensely and think the sun shines out of her butt. I think she knows that she is unable, unstable, a bad mother, a terrible employee - and everything she does is calculated to prevent anyone knowing. Hence the character assasinations, constant harping on about others, and threats of violence and abandonment if us kids ever told anyone what she was like. I think this is why in the last few years, she has started accusing all her daughters husbands/partners of sexual abuse if they have children. She knows we are old enough to tell them what she is really like, she has no form of control over them, so she wants to remove them from the equation. She is motivated by fear of sorts - not by an overbearing sense of importance. > > I like the way different " flavors " of bpd were broken down in " Understanding the Borderline Mother " . Guest guest
Yeah. BPD nadas seesaw back and forth between self-loathing and trying to make everyone agree with everything they think--ostensibly because they are so good and right, but really because their tenuous sense of self-worth just collapses completely if everyone around them isn't nodding their heads and applauding every second. --LL. *this post has been trimmed*
