jo, can I ask his age and how much you are giving him? Also, are you using any of the companion supps and if so when in relation to the iodine are you dosing? Many thanks,GayleTo: mb12 valtrex Sent: Sat, March 5, 2011 8:35:33 AMSubject: Iodine Questions?

I started my son on iodine a couple weeks ago and am seeing really good progress with him.

My questions is though, I am seeing some stimming and was wondering if anyone thought it might be die off. I hesitate to give him charcoal since he has problems with constipation.

When I backed off the dosage one day, he went back to his old just sit on the couch all day self. Lately, he has actually been playing with toys. You can see him using his brain.

Thanks!

Hi jo,

How much iodine (Lugols?) are you giving him? what other supps is he taking and

how old and weight? What does he eat?

Stimming is probably die off. Did he stim before or just since the addition of

the Lugols iodine?

Hi Cheryl and Gayle, my son is 13, severely autistic with grand mals, not

controlled with meds. He has never been vaccinated. He has severe allergies,

having grand mals as a reaction. I muscle test his foods to make sure he gets

no food he will have a reaction to. This is not accurate of course.

I did not know I was supposed to give him other supplements along with the

iodine. His allergies are so bad, this is not an option for me to do for him.

He is on biotics research liquid iodide forte. The back of the bottle says,

iodine(as potassium iodide) 1 drop is 150 mcg. This was recommended by a

chiro, 15 drops a day. I did find online that some use this at 8 drops 3 times

a day.

This is the only thing I have ever used for my thyroid that has helped me. I

was amazed that after being on it for a short amount of time, that my hair

started coming in thicker, the thinning areas grew in and the hair on my arms

came back.

I am thinking it is die off. I backed off his dosage one day to 2 drops and he

sat on the couch all day, that is how he spends most of his day. When I upped

it the next day, he went back to playing with his puzzles, something I haven't

seen him do in 2 years. He is also making elaborate shapes with his blue thomas

tracks. You can just see his brain working.

He has also been hitting everything and drooling. I just gave him charcoal, so

if it helps, I am going to assume it has been die off and push through this.

Thank you for any help you can offer me.

jo, I'm afraid I'd be of little or no help. The iodine stuff is only 20 days old in this house. My son has soooo many of the common symptoms of hyopthyroidism except that he's disturbingly thin (as 's discussed). My mom has goiter with normal labs. The thing your son and mine have in common is a highly reactive nature to treatments. My son is a Herxheimer reaction champ. Low and slow is our way of life. He'll be on 1 drop of Lugol's 2% for at least a month before I even think about 2 drops. I gave Lugol's too close to an epsom salt bath the other night and he had way too much detox, too fast and things were very tense for hours afterward. Cheryl will have so much more guidance. I'm giving a multi for teens with Se, Niacinamide, vit c

and I'm hoping its enough of the companion elements. When I eventually find a way to sneak ACV into him it will be in a toddlers dose. I don't doubt there are parasite issues but I know we have to rid very gently with this kid. Sure hoping the charcoal helps your guy today and that he's having a die off reaction versus allergic so that you can pick up and continue watching him make gains again. Hi jo, how do you give the charcoal? In juice, or can your child swallow capsules? My 6 year-old doesn't swallow capsules yet, and he can feel the charcoal in juice and he wont drink it, but he desperately needs it. I just can't figure out how to get charcoal into this child.

Ooh charcoal has been tricky in the past. Luckily my son does not have any

issues with textures. We used to use just the smallest amount of water that we

could to mix it, open the caps and put it on a large serving spoon. We would

have drinking water ready too. Sometimes it would take 2 or 3 of us to get it

in him but we did it.

One would have the spoon at his mouth, one would be behind him holding his head

and one would plug his nose so he had to open his mouth. He never choked once

and it worked every time. Then we would give him water.

I hope that helps.

,When I give charcoal it's 1 or 2 caps at a time and they are 280mg each (Solaray brand). If we're in the middle of a herx (which typically lasts a couple days), I drop all supps down to the very basics and try to give charcoal a couple times per day 2 hrs away from any other supps. I also do less complex, easily digested foods at that time. Everything I learned about managing/helping this kid I learned on this board!GayleFrom: Hammes

just jumping in--when I first needed to do charcoal with my kiddo, I was stumped at how to get it into him (he was 4 and not swallowing pills yet) a a good friend suggested putting it into applesauce (he had done it with her child)

---turns it black--but we called it cool lava apple sauce and he liked it.

Good luck to you!

I have a son like yours, with grand mal seizers triggered by food allergies, the best solution is to remove that item as it is causing shock to the body. taurine can also help with seizer thresholds. have you checked those out? if to low or to high can increase seizer activity, and selenium being high can effect things as well

you can control seizers as well through diet

Subject: Re: Iodine Questions?

Hi jo, Sorry it took me so long to respond. I had to think about this for a bit. Cause i have never been around anyone having grand mals and the thought of it is very scary to me. I cant imagine what you must go thru. I have only had one friend whose son had seizures and not grand mals so my experience is very limited and I wouldnt want to say something that could make the sitution worse and since didnt have seizures i never really studied it that much. You are giving a very weak solution of iodide only. It can help some. Most the Iodine docs say that the body needs both the iodide and iodine. I have never used the iodide only so i cant comment on the difference how it would feel. If he is having bad die off from it i would just stay steady (it does get better) or change to Lugols at a very very small amount. There are some that use both the SSKI (the product you have) and the Lugols solutions. The dosage is small enough that the companion supplements wouldnt necessarily be needed if he was getting adequate nutrition, salt and water. When you say the allergies cause the grand mals is that the only reaction or are there other allergic reaction type signs? Does it happen quickly after eating it or later? Trying to determine if it could be a stomach issue or intestine(leaky gut). And when you say he sits on the couch all day, does he stim while sitting? Watch movies? Does he get irritated if you make him get up?I think what Gayle said is very good. Slow slow slow. Do you think his gut is the problem? Does he have digestion issues? Does he have OCD ? What other behaviors does he have? Has he been tested for PANDAS? Virus? Parasites? Thyroid ? Free T3 and T4? TSH? Has his B vitamin levels been checked? Minerals?Something that sticks with me is that DMG with B6 and Magnesium has been used successfully in people whose seizures are unable to be controlled with meds. Its been a while since i studied the DMG so google it and see if you can find some info relating to it and seizures. He is non verbal right ? Any words? Is he mostly quiet or does he babble or scream? Does he get giggles? Sorry if i am not remembering everything about your child, its hard for me to keep track of what peoples issues are and things they are using and symptoms and so I like to be sure. What does he choose to eat? Or does he just eat what you give him? Have you tried bypassing the gut, transdermal use of Magnesium? Have you added the Natural Salt, if so how does he react. Do you use salt? What kind?Is he taking anything else now?Trying to get a better picture :-) Cheryl > > >> > > I started my son on iodine a couple weeks ago and am seeing really good progress with him.> > > > > > My questions is though, I am seeing some stimming and was wondering if anyone thought it might be die off. I'm not jo, but before my boys could swallow capsules, I gave charcoal in

homemade pearsauce. Activated charcoal is tasteless and odorless. You can hide

it in anything you want as far as taste and odor goes. The only drawback is

that it is black. It is just a matter of whether or not the color will bother

him.

Thanks a lot for the charcoal suggestions, guys! I should have mentioned my son has always had texture sensitivities and has never tolerated soft, creamy or wet foods, which makes it so hard b/c I can't mix his supplements into anything but juice. At this point he will not take applesauce. I've been able to hide the color of the charcoal in an opaque lidded cup but he can feel gritty texture and then he won't go near it. Is everybody's charcoal gritty? Maybe there's a brand w/ a finer texture?

Hi Christel, I do not feed him foods he is allergic to, the problem is, they

change almost daily and so inadvertently, he does get foods he is allergic to.

I have had him on both Taurine and selenium for seizures but he only gets to be

on them a day or so before he start reacting to them. He is a tricky tricky

boy.

Thank you for your thoughts.

I know a mom (I don't know if she's on this list or another) who mixed it with a

spoon of chocolate coconut milk ice cream. Don't let the look fool you,

charcoal is naturally sweet.

No need to respond if you don't like this advice. Take what you want and leave

I don't know what your dietary situation is, but you could try peanutbutter, almond butter, applebutter or sunbutter. Also, coconut yogurt is quite "soupy" not thick and stiff like regular yogurt or pudding. You could probably mix the charcoal right in it and let him drink it through a straw. Hope you find something that works. -tammy

At this point he will not take applesauce. I've been able to hide the color of the charcoal in an opaque lidded cup but he can feel gritty texture and then he won't go near it. Is everybody's charcoal gritty? Maybe there's a brand w/ a finer texture?Soraya  I'm not jo, but before my boys could swallow capsules, I gave charcoal in homemade pearsauce. Activated charcoal is tasteless and odorless. You can hide it in anything you want as far as taste and odor goes. The only drawback is that it is black. It is just a matter of whether or not the color will bother him.>> Hi jo, how do you give the charcoal? In juice, or can your child swallow> capsules? Thanks Gayle!Sent from my iPhone

,When I give charcoal it's 1 or 2 caps at a time and they are 280mg each (Solaray brand).

Gayle, That's really good advice. We have to go low and slow on everything . How much charcoal do you give? Thanks,Sent from my iPhone

jo, I'm afraid I'd be of little or no help.

Hi Cheryl and Gayle, my son is 13, severely autistic with grand mals, not controlled with meds. He has never been vaccinated. He has severe allergies, having grand mals as a reaction. I muscle test his foods to make sure he gets no food he will have a reaction to. This is not accurate of course.

I did not know I was supposed to give him other supplements along with the iodine. His allergies are so bad, this is not an option for me to do for him.

He is on biotics research liquid iodide forte. The back of the bottle says, iodine(as potassium iodide) 1 drop is 150 mcg. This was recommended by a chiro, 15 drops a day. I did find online that some use this at 8 drops 3 times a day.

This is the only thing I have ever used for my thyroid that has helped me. I was amazed that after being on it for a short amount of time, that my hair started coming in thicker, the thinning areas grew in and the hair on my arms came back.

I am thinking it is die off. I backed off his dosage one day to 2 drops and he sat on the couch all day, that is how he spends most of his day. When I upped it the next day, he went back to playing with his puzzles, something I haven't seen him do in 2 years. He is also making elaborate shapes with his blue thomas tracks. You can just see his brain working.

He has also been hitting everything and drooling. I just gave him charcoal, so if it helps, I am going to assume it has been die off and push through this.

Thank you for any help you can offer me.

does he tolerate b vitamins? Specifically B6? My husbands seizures are

controlled by: B6, Taurine, and vitamin E.

B vitamins and any fish oils are a huge no for him. They cause massive grand

mals that last for days!
