Guest guest
Hi, Connie. Start gently. Try waiting long enough, just once, to feel a little bit of hunger. Reassure yourself that you will feed yourself promptly as soon as you feel a little bit of hunger. If you've dieted a lot your system may be afraid of getting hungry because it thinks you're starving. When you feel just a bit of hunger, eat something absolutely delicious very slowly and mindfully. If you do this only once a day, that's progress. The more you do it, the better you'll get at it, and the more your deprived system will start to trust that you're going to listen to it. Yes, you might gain weight during this phase of things. But take the longer view - this is a process. You can't play the violin just because you decide to - it takes a lot of practice over time. And on the way you may make some awful noises. But there's also no way to fail at it as long as you keep practicing. I gained weight at the beginning and was terrified/horrified/mortified, but kept reminding myself that a diet would only end up making me fatter and more miserable. Now my weight seems to have stabilized, although I haven't begun losing yet because I still need more practice with this. But I've gotten comfortable with all kinds of goodies in my house. And I'm comfortable feeling hunger more of the time and even more intensely than I was at the beginning, because I'm starting to trust that I will be well fed every single time I need to eat. Gently. Good luck. April Hi all and Happy New Year.. I just got the IE book couple of weeks before New Year's and am attempting to live by it. However, it's not really "working", so to speak.... While I understand the program, the freedom, the no-restrictions-thus-no-need-for-binge mentality, I am still, frankly, not eating when I am hungry and not stopping when I am full (which is impossible, because I'm not hungry to begin with). I'm afraid I'm going to gain even more weight and am starting to panic, thinking, "I better start dieting now..."" Help! -Connie
Guest guest
Hi Nora, I have found that if I eat "Super Greens" by Dr. Al Sears--they're part of his "Primal Force" supplements--my appetite gradually calms down over a period of a month. Taking PureVinol resveratrol supplements also gives me a feeling of well-being that aids me in exercise. I've begun exercycling in the house. I'm at 6 minutes-wow! I'm aiming for about 24 minutes sometime within the next 6 months. A GREAT motivational book--just ignore the dieting tips--is "The San Francisco Weight Loss Method." I'm not dieting in any way, despite the fact that I have diabetes II, but no calorie counting or detailed carb counting or any other dietetic plan. I just listen to my appetite and stop eating when I have "enough." The supplements I take tremendously aid me in that noble end! My blood sugar seems to be gradually gradually normalizing. It still peaks if I have a lot of carbs--and knowing that fact, all by itself, motivates me to eat somewhat less carbs! best wishes always, Mike Rael, MS Subject: I'm new to this...To: IntuitiveEating_Support Date: Thursday, January 6, 2011, 10:00 PM Hi all and Happy New Year..
