Welcome to 12sf, Bill. I too am new. Feel free to jump in and get your feet

wet by starting a new topic. The Szazs threads have been popular the last

week or so. I am partly to blame, but then I like following them and jumping

in with my 2cents. I was going to propose that the list be renamed to 13sf,

put often people don't get my jokes. :-)

> Happy Labor Day, all ye who labor ...

Thank you. And a happy Labor day to all.

Yes. Szasz (or is it Szazs/) is a great man and intellectual who is very

much admired by some people here. He is an influential scholar and teacher

who showed remarkable courage throughout his life in criticisng his

proffesion and his collegues. He made a terrible mistake in his youth. It

was the crazy lazy sixties: Good acid was everywhere, The Beatles where god,

and sex was like a handshake....

(just kidding about the last two sentences) :-P :-)

Again, welcome and don't hesitate to jump into the fray.

Judith,

I really appreciate your words. I must admit, I was reacting with a great

deal of sensitivity....this probably means that I need to 'toughen up'

some..(and, maybe stop 'personalizing'...)

Thanks....:-)

Ellen, Bill:

Ellen, I'm glad you brought up the idea of being " off topic. " I have

to say I appreciate the fact that Ken uses his power as a moderator

sparingly, because I think there is so much value in ideas around the

main idea. To me, context is an important part of understanding any

idea. So I tend to think that most ideas are on topic. Also, I think

the " one size fits all " approach is the single biggest problem with

*A. I think that everyone has to find their own answers, and those

answers come from all different directions, imo. Finally, since you

mention you may not post as enthusiastically in the future, I just

want to say again that I've appreciated your contribution a lot.

Bill, I hope you stick around. I see this group as dynamic and I

think

everyone contributes in a different way. I like seeing how different

people change the nature of the group and I'd like to hear more of

what you have to say.

I'm thinking Pittsburgh must be a pretty happening place, with all

you

12sf folks living in close proximity.

Hi Bill

Of course taking meds does not buy into the disease model - there

thinking is totally illogical, but the DM crowd are almost always

opposed to drug treatment - with the meaningless banality " A drug is a

drug " .

Hey Pete ...

Thanks for writing ...

>does use of pharmaceuticals as an adjunct to recovery necessarily buy into

the " disease " model of the condition itself?<

I wasn't so much asking for myself, but was curious to see how others thought

about this. The " drug is a drug " mentality is SO pervasive. Haven't we all

seen people who got hurt by discontinuing meds they really need for safety

and functionality?

I know I have Bill, and so do the ppl I know who knew the same ppl -

but they *never* interpret it that way - they just see it as bad luck.
