Guest guest
Ok, here it is. This is the treatment that our ENTS reported cut down their rate of sinus surgery by half. And YES, it IS DISGUSTING and GROSS but IT WORKS!. Probably most of us should be doing it -- ok, ok, I'm gonna start too. See my post yesterday about the E. tube/sinus drainage, etc. NASAL SALINE IRRIGATION 1 liter (quart) of warm water (distilled is preferred) 2-3 heaping teaspoons of salt Hawaiian or sea salt or canning/pickling salt NOT table salt 1 teaspoon Arm and Hammer Baking soda pure bicarbonate Nose should be irrigated 2-3 times a day with a bulb syringe, large medical syringe or water pik with irrigator tipi (available at Long's-- our local drugstore). Stand over the sink and squirt the salt water into the nose in such a fashion that you are able to spit some of the saline out of your mouth. Aim the stream of saline as though you are trying to squirt the back of your head, NOT the top of your head. It is acceptable to breathe saltwater directly into the nose. Warm salt water is preferred as it is much more comfortable. The amount of salt added will depend on your tolerance. However, the more salt that is added the greater the decongestant effect. The bicarbonate is a buffer and will allow the salt water to be less irritating. The BENEFITS of hypertonic saline irrigation are three-fold: 1. It is a solvent. It cleans mucus, crusts and other debris from the nasal passages. 2. It decongests the nose. Because of the high salt concentration, fluid is pulled out of the membrane. This shrinks the membrane which improves nasal air flow and opens sinus passages. 3. It improves nasal drainage. Studies have shown that salt water cleansing of the nasal membranes improves ciliary beating so that normal mucus is transported better from the sinus through the nose and into the throat. If you are using a nasal steroid such as Beconase, Vancenase or Flonase, you should always cleanse the nose first with the salt water before utilizing the nasal steroid. The nasal steroid is most effective when sprayed onto clean nasal membranes, and it reaches deeper into the nose after cleansing and decongestion. Guest guest
Hum, I think Carolyn better leave this one off the recipe list . LOLOLOL Of course, my family is so desperate for good food, they might actually enjoy it after some of the things I've fixed in the past. :-) But really Carolyn, thanks for sending this. My boss suffers from MAJOR sinus problems and I'm going to copy this and give it to her. Also, may I send this to the autoimmune club please? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Carolyn, thanks for the recipe.
