Very interesting. Thank you for sharing.I had never heard of this before, so I thought I would share. My son just had a bunch of bloodwork done. Included was a serum zinc level and an RBC Elements test. The serum zinc is at a normal level (high normal, even), but his red blood cell zinc is deficient. So he is getting enough zinc, but it isn't going into his red blood cells. His doctor is putting him on MTP because one of the things it does is help get zinc into the blood cells.I'm wondering if this might be why we haven't seen some of the reported benefits of zinc supplementation. If it isn't getting into his red blood cells, then it isn't getting into other cells and is just taking a ride in his serum, right? :)Anyway, I didn't know if this might be helpful for someone who has been supplementing zinc but not seeing the expected results from it.

What is MTP? That is interesting. I haven't seen much in the way of results from zinc. Maybe that's why. I know my one daughter has issues with using b12 (it just hangs out outside the cells).- Kirk-To: mb12 valtrex From: cathcall@...Date: Thu, 17 Mar 2011 21:38:30 +0000Subject: Interesting Zinc Information

Good question! Haha. My doc told me the long name, but I didn't write it down

and then he just referred to it as MTP. I can let you know after it arrives. I

do know that it is a protein - not an amino acid, but an actual protein. He

wants us to give one capsule every other night at bedtime. It can be given with

food, but not with food containing protein. So I can't give it with his bedtime

yogurt and will have to wait 30 minutes after snack to give it.

Like probably everyone else here, I am really proficient at Google, but I

couldn't find anything on MTP from my first cursory Google search. I will

search again when I have more time.

Maybe it is metallothionein-like proteins (MTP)? Mimoza

Okay, I got the notes in email today. Here is what the doctor wrote:

" Although the zinc is fine in the serum, it is low in the red blood cell. This

would make me thing that he is absorbing the zinc

but not putting it into the cells. This would have me question if he is showing

a metallothionein protein dysfunction. To treat this we give an amino acid

supplement called MTP-2 (metallothionein promotor) Give him 1 capsule of MTP-II

175mg at bedtime, away from Taurine

and food with protein. "

Verbally he did say it is an actual protein because I had asked if it was an

amino acid that had been tested (we had also done an amino acid test) and he

said it isn't an amino acid, but an actual protein. I also have to email him

back to ask how often I give it. On the phone he said every other night, but in

the notes it doesn't specify that and just says " at bedtime. "

I had found some info on metallothionein protein transport (I think from

Pfeiffer?), but I wasn't sure that was right so I didn't read it all. I will go

do some more checking now. :)

How old is your son? Is this a prescription? Just wondering if it's something I can try for my daughter. Also, do you know if it specifically just helps with zinc absorption or with absorption in general? Thanks!- Kirk-To: mb12 valtrex From: cathcall@...Date: Fri, 18 Mar 2011 15:23:57 +0000Subject: Re: Interesting Zinc Information
