Guest guest
PDD-NOS and Aspbergers all fall under ASD. To: taca-usa ; mb12 valtrex Sent: Wed, March 16, 2011 4:48:55 PMSubject: Anyone know status of Asperger's on DSM? I am having an insurance battle for the cheapskates to pay for my son's speech. He has epilepsy/seizure disorder and basically his language did not progress neurotypically after his first seizure.Ins Co. only pays for speech for autism spectrum disorders, genetic/birth defects, or brain injury. He had a fall onto his head on the day of his first seizure. We of course do not know if he seized first, then fell or the other way around. He was playing in the tv room by himself, being monitored sporadically while daddy was fixing him microwave sausage that morning (I was in the shower and then getting dressed)Anyway, seizures run in the family. And we have a bunch of metabolic disorders. Never did all the genetic tests, but we ruled out Fragile X.I called in Nov, ins co said they would approve seizures for speech therapy and now are refusing based on needing proof that the seizures are related to either genetic/birth defects or head injury. Well, we have both but of course they did not dig very deep, just denied the claims. So I called the neuro office and asked if they could send a note regarding my son's first seizure occurring after head trauma.I get a call back from the office assistant saying she referred him for speech based on Asperger's with mild speech delay (because the MRI showed no structural issues)First time I've heard anyone say Asperger's in reference to my son (my daughter is dx'd with this and fits the dx to a T but my son is a harder nut to crack, too social for AS I think, plus the language troubles) Anyway, I said oh really, ok... but is that still considered ASD in the DSM, or is the ins co going to try wrangle out of it??? And in that case, would PDD-NOS be more appropriate anyway due to speech delay and then the next question was, ugh, is that(PDD) still considered ASD?I was just looking for the easy & direct way with the head trauma because he was hospitalized for head injury that day, paperwork indicates seizure after head injury... but if this is how she wants to dx, I don't care, just need his speech covered, he needs it and we are broke... 50$ in copays per week is bad enough.Anyone have any advice? Can I just send my records of the hospitalizations, med reports myself?-- Toni------Mind like a steel trap...Rusty and illegal in 37 states. Guest guest
I would stick to the head injury approach. Not sure how it goes where you live, but in British Columbia, Canada last I heard Asperger's was still on the DSM for ASD but was soon going to be removed. PDD NOS is part of the spectrum, but many times funding for support in schools is not provided if that is the dx. I agree speech issues would rule out Aspergers. If you have the paperwork that you feel will get you coverage, it can't hurt to make copies and send the info yourself. The doctor may not send the same supporting information.Good luck.I am having an insurance battle for the cheapskates to pay for my son's speech. He has epilepsy/seizure disorder and basically his language did not progress neurotypically after his first seizure.Ins Co. only pays for speech for autism spectrum disorders, genetic/birth defects, or brain injury. He had a fall onto his head on the day of his first seizure. Guest guest
We went natural with Aspergers and speech delay/difficulties. My son had 1 seizure at 5 weeks, then a terrible fall at 11 months. An ND [Natural Dr] is not covered by ins. but the ins co was giving me such a fight about his issues. We were going to have to spend so munh money we figured let's try the natural route. With exception of a some sensory issues, he is a normal little man! If I can help you let me know,,,,,hang in there,,,,you have options:} This took a year with supplements, cheleation and diet change Always Call Christie Gravatt We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience! Guest guest
Thanks Christie. We are doing diet, supps, and homeopathy right now. Everything is helping in some way, I guess ;-)The speech is really giving him confidence I think, so I want to keep it.His 20 sessions are just up this week, and the speech place won't let me continue at co-pay rate (only cash) until I figure out what's what from ins. We also are starting RDI, and he has had OT therapy for SPD. Throwing everything at this kid LOL he's had more therapies than my dx'd ASD kid...
