I love that smell of steaks and burgers on the grill that drifts around

outside in the summer.

When I do hot dogs on the roller unit they get that smell like the fair and

it drifts all over the house.

Call From The Doctor

Hi All,

I got a call from Dr. and he is not too happy. My blood sugar was

169 which I did not think was that bad. But my A1C was 11.8 and he warned

me

that I had better watch it or I will end up in the hospital.

I would like some advice from Nurse in particular and all the

rest of you can do whatever to whip me into shape.

Thanks.

Is that all? My wife takes this and something else. This one you mention was

added to my wife's regime later on. I think it's something like a longer acting

medication.

I have learned to keep my temptation harnessed, so now when we're at

friends or relatives, they may just ask once or twice more before giving up.

I guess you could say that we are finally getting them educated.

Re: Call From The Doctor

when this happens you got to have the control you have to have to stay on

track. way more times then I care to remember I gave in to having more. they

don't understand why and how you must eat the way you do. I think they all

mean well. we who are the diabetic must be stronger then they are. it is us

who gets hurt and not them if we give in. hate to make them believe there

cooking sucked, but better they think that if you can't convince them other

wise. the price you will pay is much higher then there feelings. but after

you have ate with them a few times, then they will figure it out and all is

well that ends well.

my dear old grandpa who was also a blind man, once told me when I was 16

years old to always hold back part of the truth and real facts from any female.

he said they will mostly believe what they wish to believe, so by not telling

all you know is best for you in case you need to use it later down the road. he

said this isn't really telling a lie. it is simply telling just enough to keep

you out of big trouble. he said no matter how old I lived to be or how many

females I was ever friendly with, I would never figure them out or totally

understand the way there minds worked. He said take the easy road with the

ladies in my life and just except them for how God made them. he said females

are lots different then men and a man would need to be a female in order to

understand them. took me many years to understand what my grandpa was talking

about. at sixteen all I cared about was girls and I wasn't much caring how they

thought or looked at life. my grandpa was only clouding up my thinking at that

time. he did say after I lived at least 20 more years it would all become clear

to me. then he said I would have a son of my own and could pass on the advice.

well I never could have kids of my own and don't have any, so guess I just have

to tell any one who will listen. maybe a fellow here on the list can pass it on

to his son and man kind will be better off in the long run.

this reminds me of any time I sit out side in my easy chair and hear the

birds all singing and being a happy bird, I always feel like I'm in a grave

yard. this is why I have never liked a bird in the house. would hate for my home

to remind me of a grave yard. we got a nut house here in OkC called green acres.

just doesn't seem fitting to me to call it such a pleasant name like green

acres.

It's a long lonely road sometimes. Most people simply don't appreciate the

opportunity to be re-educated. Which is what it comes down to. A new way of

thinking, a new way of eating. Hopefully, some of the people in our lives we

connect with will catch on, but usually they don't. I will say, my mother-in-law

is making slow progress, and this is thanks in part to my wife who is also

finally beginning to catch on. A typical Easter meal (thought of this since it's

coming up) might have the usual, ham in our case, but my mother-in-law could not

think of serving a big meal without 3 or 4 sources of carbohydrates. There might

be mashed potatoes, corn, stuffing, and dinner rolls. Plus dessert! But she is

starting to see the light, and it will be interesting this coming Sunday to see

if the carb count is lower.

well he was born in 1898, so this may have had a thing or to to do with the

advice he probably got from his daddy. he also told me back in the 1800's there

was a post in the middle of the town square and they called it the whipping

post. he said a man could tie his wife to this whipping post and spank her with

a switch no larger then his thumb if she hadn't been doing what she was suppose

to do. this is where they got the term rule of thumb. they said a woman was a

man's property like his plow or his cow and land. my grandpa never said he had

to ever drag my grandma to town and tie her to the whipping post in the town

square. simply because she had passed away before I was born. maybe she would

have had a different story to tell if I could have talked to her. I don't

believe you can believe all an old man tells you about the good old days! kind

of like walking up hill to school both ways? however, I have read in some books

about how they lived 200 years ago and there really was a whipping post in the

middle of towns for wives and slaves who got out of line. I also read where

women really were thought of as a man's property and not his equal as it is now.

obey the man is what was expected of the woman way back then no matter what he

told her to do, but now in the times we live even the word obey has been took

out of the wedding vales. I wonder though, was it a female or a male who pushed

to have it took out????

Hi mark andall.

My favorite from that list isof course bacon.

I do not like bacon under cooked though as in

still flabby fat on it, but ido like it to be flimsy.

Yummy.

And i was told that meat doesn't matter in a diabeticdiet, but I know

the fat don't do the heart any good really.

I've never tried grilled pineapple though.

It is really hard for the doc to prescribe more medication unless he knows

at what time of day your BG goes up. That is why you need to do BG other

times of the day besides mornings. Also, keep a record of them on the

computer so he can look at it when he comes out to visit.

and I eat at home most of the time. We do eat out a couple of

times during the first two weeks of the month. We live in a town of six to

seven-thousand. There are two places that deliver, sometimes a good thing

and sometimes a bad one.

I do remember back in 1979 when I was diagnosed with diabetes, I was

with a couple of friends and of course they wanted to stop at Dairy Queen.

We were at the window placing our orders. I ordered a plain hamburger,

small fries. I had been so thirsty for a chocolate malt, so I decided to

treat myself to one. As soon as that part part of the order was out of my

mouth, a woman standing next to me said, " I don't think you're suppose to

have that. " I turned to look to see who had spoken and there was one of the

nurses who had taken care of me while I was in the hospital. I had it

anyway. I was twenty years old, feeling good again and of course, thought I

was invincible, even being a diabetic.

Hi Lora,

No, I am not on the list for a pancreas at this time. My diabetic

doctor says I have really improved in taking care of myself over the last

one to two years. I do feel good most of the time. I live in Southwest

Iowa, however, I see a doctor at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where

I had my kidney and pancreas transplants done. They are all on the same

computer system at NMC, so when my labs are done here at the hospital in

town and the results are faxed to and received in Omaha, the transplant

doctors can see them, along with any medical people I see.

As far as my A1C goes, the doctor I see asked me if I feel better than I

did a couple of years ago? I answered yes. He said keep your A1C down and

I think you will find that you will continue to feel that way. So now when

my labs are done, they perform an A1C every third month, I call Kim my

transplant nurse and if it has crept up, it's time to do more blood sugar

checks and eat better.

Re: Call From The Doctor

Hi ,

Are you still on the waiting list for the transplant? What do you do that

id different to bring the A1C down?

will I got this covered. I'm only on the second marriage and plan for it to

be my last as long as I live. the first wife don't give a flip where I am or

what I'm about, so she is no problem. the rest how ever I'm very careful in how

I answer there questions or what I tell them. seems to me in my limited

understanding of females in general, that they got memories like a steel trap.

everything that goes in hardly ever gets out. of course this isn't no long true

when they get Alzheimer's as my Momma did. once back in the mid 80's I happen to

be in the hospital with my BP to high. I happen to have a nurse that I knew from

my party days. she remembered me and the way I explained to her that I wasn't

ready for her and her 3 kids to move in with me. she said I was very mean about

it. I explained how she was kind of pushy about the request and how I had way to

many cold beers to be held in restraint. she had no for giveness in her then or

when I seen her in the hospital that time. I say now after looking back on that

meeting that a nurse with a memory of a bad time in her life shouldn't be

allowed to give the person a shot who was the cause of the bad memory and the

pain she said she had from the broken heart. just saying how sorry you are for

ten years in the past doesn't always work well for those females who carry the

hate with them and allow it to grow in strength. I believe she may have enjoyed

way to much the shot she had to give me that day. it most certainly did hurt

bad, but I sucked it up and never got her in trouble for it. the next day I

never seen her any more and then later I got to go home. I do recall the time

that night at the bar that she was talking about, but while under the influence

of to many beers and the fact that she was looking for a sucker like me to move

in with was to much for a young man as I was then to handle in a gentlemen's

manner. she said way back then I acted like a pig that evening. so as you can

see I was thought of as a pig years before the handle was actually hung on me

for good. I did learn after that to be very careful what I tell any female

because of there steel trap memory's.

Call From The Doctor

I got a call from Dr. and he is not too happy. My blood sugar was
