We used Natural Factors 3 mg sublingual tablets. I don't think they are time release. They have a minty tasty and I used to tell Stan it was his bedtime minty. He liked the taste and thought of it as a treat. It is important to keep the room as dark as possible. No night lights, dark curtains to keep street lamp light out. Cover clocks that are illuminated. I am not sure that the melatonin by itself would have been enough. Another important factor was getting rid of his acid reflux, stomach discomfort and parasites (tapeworm). He was so badly constipated at one time, I don't think anyone could sleep when they are badly backed up and have a fire burning in their intestines. If you can tell me more about your son's situation/behaviours in general, I will be happy to tell you any similarities to my son and what I did to help him feel better. May not work the same for you, but listening to other people's similar issues and fixes is how I came to figure what would work for Stan. PS 5 HTP may also be helpful. The body will convert it to serotonin and then to melatonin as needed. We started using this recently to try and reduce hand biting and head banging.   We did give TR melatonin, did you give it to him (TR) when he woke and did he go back to sleep quickly & stay asleep? When I first started I was taking a holistic approach, by dealing with inflammation, viruses, and bacteria - not just the constipation, so I will tell you everything we used that eventually led to healthy bowel movements. Grapefruit Seed ExtractOlive Leaf ExtractResveratrolNordic Natural CLO + DEasy Bones Calcium/Magnesium supplement. It's a powder and I mix it into juice.Aloe Vera juice - any kind will doPsyllium husk and plenty of waterPrune juice1/4 tsp non-irradiated turmeric to increase stomach acid and reduce inflammationBromelain - enzyme from pineapple helps with digestionOils like flax, grapeseed, olive,  will help make the stool softer as well.Paragone for KidsGetting rid of the tapeworm also helped. Tapeworms stun the intestines so they don't contract as much. That way they don't have to hold on so hard, and the food travels through slower so they can absorb the nutrients better. This will lead to constipation.Chinese Daily Detox tea to help support the liver and kidneys.Cal/Magnesium plays a big part in keeping his poops healthy looking. If I forget to give it to him he starts to bind up right away. His hair tests also show that he is low in Cal Mag.,Aloe vera juice and prune juice should bring immediate results. What have you tried?,What did you do for the constipation? For constipation you can try Milk of Magnesia, Aloe Vera Juice and Oxypowder. Did you do all of that together at one time? I have tried prunes, prune juice, aloe vera juice ('s), CLO + D, strong probiotics, digestive enzymes, fiber, all different kinds of magnesium, tons of fruit/veggies and water. I never tried oxy powder. Someone had recommended that. The first few days of doing apple cider vinegar with a drop of iodine seemed to really help, but then she went right back to being constipated. Honestly, the only thing that ever consistently works is to give her a dulcolax suppository. It works almost instantly, but I hate to give her something so harsh. I use them as a last resort when she is in dire need. It's been the better part of a year that we've been battling this. We're taking care of parasites right now and we are seeing them in her diapers, so I'm hoping once that is resolved, maybe some of the other things can better do their jobs. - Kirk-To: mb12 valtrex From: recoveringstan@...Date: Thu, 17 Mar 2011 14:16:00 -0700Subject: Re: Not Sleeping! Yes I did them all at the same time. I started with CLO for 1 week, then added OLE and GSE, then added Bromelain, etc.Grape juice also used to get him going right away.Did you do all of that together at one time? Hi everyone... I've read many of your emails and see so much in common

with your children and my son. I would like to have my son see a DAN

doctor. We live in Miami, Florida but I'm not sure who is the real

deal. He is nine years old and his behavior is really getting out of

control with stimming, breaking things, biting himself, fussy, thinks

annoying another child is funny, vocal stims, giggle and then suddenly

whines??The list goes on and on. He is at a three year old level

developmentally. I have had him on a GFCF diet for almost 4 years

because he would break out from head to toe and none of the doctors

could tell me why. He has been rash free with the exception of one

infraction almost two years ago and it helped a lot with language

skills and some attention span but I am afraid his behaviors will get

the best of him. I am now looking to start him on Applied Behavior

therapy but his medicaid doesn't cover it so that is my other mission.

I wonder what tests can be done that his insurance will cover to

determine the levels of bacteria, viruses, fungus etc that maybe

playing a role on his behavior and not sleeping? or even to see from a

biomedical point what supplements he should be taking if he is

deficient. Thanks for your help. I'm thankful this group is here.

I would order a stool test..if you can...but his behaviour sounds like bacteria in the gut, could also be parasites..and of course yeast...is he off colourings, additives, soy and milk? limit sugar intake as it feeds yeast..you may want to try a differnt diet alog with gluten free..TACA has some great resources to help you. The Dan could order tests for viral components too...often alot of this behaviour is gut related..you may also want to test for lyme with Igeneix. It would not hurt to put him on culturelle 3 times a day and olive leaf extract from douglas labs 500mg 1-3 per day..but you may see die off so go slow..you can use activated charcol...2 hrs after dosing if there is alot of die off symptoms and increase in behaviours is how you'd notice it. You may also want to explore if he has pandas. He may benefit from a course of drug therapy.
