I am having an insurance battle for the cheapskates to pay for my son's speech. He has epilepsy/seizure disorder and basically his language did not progress neurotypically after his first seizure.Ins Co. only pays for speech for autism spectrum disorders, genetic/birth defects, or brain injury.

He had a fall onto his head on the day of his first seizure. We of course do not know if he seized first, then fell or the other way around. He was playing in the tv room by himself, being monitored sporadically while daddy was fixing him microwave sausage that morning (I was in the shower and then getting dressed)

Anyway, seizures run in the family. And we have a bunch of metabolic disorders. Never did all the genetic tests, but we ruled out Fragile X.I called in Nov, ins co said they would approve seizures for speech therapy and now are refusing based on needing proof that the seizures are related to either genetic/birth defects or head injury. Well, we have both but of course they did not dig very deep, just denied the claims.

So  I called the neuro office and asked if they could send a note regarding my son's first seizure occurring after head trauma.I get a call back from the office assistant saying she referred him for speech based on Asperger's with mild speech delay (because the MRI showed no structural issues)

First time I've heard anyone say Asperger's in reference to my son (my daughter is dx'd with this and fits the dx to a T but my son is a harder nut to crack, too social for AS I think, plus the language troubles) Anyway, I said oh really, ok... but is that still considered ASD in the DSM, or is the ins co going to try wrangle out of it??? And in that case, would PDD-NOS be more appropriate anyway due to speech delay and then the next question was, ugh, is that(PDD) still considered ASD?

I was just looking for the easy & direct way with the head trauma because he was hospitalized for head injury that day, paperwork indicates seizure after head injury... but if this is how she wants to dx, I don't care, just need his speech covered, he needs it and we are broke... 50$ in copays per week is bad enough.

Anyone have any advice? Can I just send my records of the hospitalizations, med reports myself?-- Toni------Mind like a steel trap...Rusty and illegal in 37 states.
