Hi Vicky,

UCTD stands for undifferentiated connective tissue disease. This designation is used when a person has symptoms of more than one type of auto-immune connective tissue disease but not enough symptoms of any one disease to fit neatly into a specific diagnosis. For instance I have some symptoms of lupus, scleroderma and polymyositis/dermatomyositis but not enough symptoms of any of them to be diagnosed with one disorder over the others.

My rheumotologist has said that at this point it's unlikley I'll ever fit neatly into one diagnosis. There is so much still being learned about auto-immune illness....someday they will understand all this better but for now much of this is a mystery.

Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disease. This is a diagnosis when

there appears to be a connective tissue or autoimmune disease through a

combination of symptoms and blood tests but no specific factor ties it

to a specific disease. In some cases an Autoimmune disease will develop

more fully as time goes on and be identified. In other cases, treatment

may either delay or prevent that from happening. Or, on its own, it may

remain at a moderate level for an extended time and remain

undifferentiated.
