Guest guest
I've been a member of this group for months, but have not written anything. It really helps to read about other peoples problems and ideas. I have had a problem with food for my entire life and was >100# overweight for over 20 years. I had gastric bypass surgery 8 years ago, but that surgery does nothing to heal the reasons people overeat. After the first couple of years, I found myself struggling almost daily with cravings and started dieting again, which started a new cycle of extremely negative self talk, weight gain, dieting, etc. IE is slowly and surely healing me and I am learning to love myself. I feel a newfound peace and am nicer to myself, but still struggle with emotional eating. At my church, they suggest that during Lent we give up our most precious possession - our time - to help and serve others, rather than giving up a favorite food. This may help me have something or someone else to consider when I am bored or lonely (and looking for food). I am going to try calling someone or visiting an elderly relative when I feel down, and maybe that will take my mind off of food when I'm not hungry, and help someone else at the same time. sxt Subject: Re: IE and LentTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Date: Saturday, March 12, 2011, 2:29 PM Norma, What a lovely Lenten practice! So wise of you not to give up foods when you're working to heal your relationship with food. It seems to me that healing our relationships with our appetites, our bodies and with other people is very much in line with strengthening our connection to God. And even though we strive to do that all the time, I think of Lent as a time to bring some additional focus to that work. Good luck to you! I wish you a fruitful lent (pun intended). April M. April, I appreciated your post about the point of Lent being to deepen our relationship with God. Thanks for the reminder! Because of my food issues, I've decided to do something other than give up food this season: I'm going to try to look at everyone I meet through God's eyes and find a way to encourage them along the way. For most, this may not be a big thing, but it will be a challenge for me. Norma, blogging at http://givingupdieting.wordpress.com/
