Guest guest
Everyoe has a different " norm " . It is best to see an endo, especially if your GP is putting you on insulin. Are you having low with this amount of insulin? People do gain weight with insulin, but usually only if it too much and they are eating to cover the lows. What has the insulin done with your BGs? _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Rick Alfaro Sent: Thursday, March 15, 2012 12:24 PM To: blind-diabetics Subject: A couple of questions Hi. I'm still new at this so have another couple of questions. 1. Is weight gain a possible side effect when taking Insulin? I'm only currently taking ten units in the evening of Lantus. I seem to be gaining some weight and I haven't really changed my diet or eating habits so I'm wondering if it's a side effect as it can be with Metformin. 2. Currently, it is my primary care physician that is managing how much Insulin I should take and when. Is this ok, or should I be requesting and endocrinologist? I'm thinking that since my dosage is so small and only once per evening, I'm ok with the primary care for the time being but was curious as to what the norm really is? Thanks. Guest guest
Rick, I used to see an endocrinologist, but stopped probably 10 years ago. I discovered resources like this list, and my own experiences were what I needed to go to the next level. And this is because there is so much variance from one diabetic to the next. Yes, there are some things we will each have in common, but when you get to the fine tuning of your specific condition, you'll do far better to listen to your meter, eat nutritionally, exercise, and keep your readings as close to normal as you can, which should lead to A1C results most doctors don't normally see in their diabetic patients. Guest guest
I seem to be responding quite well to the small dose of ten units. My readings in the morning are anywhere between 80 and 110 after having taken the ten units the evening before. My readings in the evening before taking the dose are anywhere between 140 and 208. I'm also taking Actos 15mg once per day along with 500mg Metformin and 5mg Glyburide twice per day. My A1c wasn't coming down from 9% before starting the Insulin. I won't know my new A1c until my next appointment which is in May.
