Mine was 21 years old and I had spent many thousands in the last 2-3 years on keeping it repaired. Far more than the car was worth. It was a case of either I fix it or I am without a car. Finally my grandson said he couldn't live with the idea of my driving that car and he bought me a beautiful used car. Now I realize how insane it was of me to keep that car running. Unless your car is fairly new, your $4,000 will just be the beginning. For your sake I will keep my fingers crossed and hope that it is worth it.
