Any > hospital grade pump is completely sterilizable (is that a > word?). The scenario was for reusing home pumps, not hospital grade pumps that are rented. Rental pumps are designed to be multiple user pumps, but pumps like the PIS, Nurture III, etc, are designed to be one mom pumps. Give Medela a call and ask about their pumps. The ones that are normally rented (Lactina, Classic) are intended to have multiple users, and are autoclavable and sterilizable. The PIS, and the Mini-Electric pumps are not. The potential for milk to get into areas within the pump exists, and using a second-hand pump (one bought at an auction, garage sale or from a friend) has the potential to pose a health risk.
