Eileen,

Adam didn't even cry until the very end, what a trooper!! Good luck when he starts wearing it and keep everyone posted with his progress! I'm sure it will be harder on you than it is on Adam- believe it or not!

Dear

I can understand how you are feeling as the same kind of thing happened to my sister in law. The GPs checked over in hospital and all seemed fine. At this stage no-one thought anything was wrong. It was hard to tell as was always asleep.

Two weeks later she visited the Clinic sister who was worried about the epicanthal folds, the shape of his ears, the width between his eyes, the flattened nasal bridge and the Asian slope of his eyes. The following week she took to the GP and he said he just has small eyes. But gave them a referral to see a Paediatrician anyway. We live in Central West NSW in a town called Parkes and do not have a Paediatrician here so had to wait a couple of weeks before one came to town. He took photos of and did measurements as well as blood tests (which included chromosome studies) and said he would have a discussion with his colleagues and wait for the blood results to come back and he would let them know in about a week or two.

The Paediatrician phoned and told them has a condition known as BPES. He said he knew nothing about it but for them to look on the internet to see what they could find out. He told them they could ring him anytime with any questions. I don't know what the point would have been as he said he knew nothing about it. He gave them a referral then to see an opthalmic specialist, Dr Tang, from Sydney.

Rob from this group gave me the names of two people who he and his son have dealt with in Sydney. My sister in law asked the Paediatrician for a referral to Dr as he has experience with BPES but she was told he has closed his books on new referrals and is winding down getting ready for retirement.

Anyway this specialist, Dr Tang, is coming to Orange (100kms East from us) on Thursday especially to see . The Paediatrician is also going to sit in on the consult as he wants to know more himself.

So at the moment we know nothing except is 8 weeks old and he has BPES.

I'll be sure to keep you informed.

Kind regards

Kristie

Perhaps the paed meant that he could help with some of the obscure

medical terminology (like what's an entropion) or broader issues (like

longer-term scar behaviour and post-operative care, etc)? Even though

they're not fully au fait with all the ophthalmic particulars in depth,

they should be up on most of the terminology and stuff in general.

D'oh and dang! I've just adopted myself in the last few years,

after my long-time ophthalmic man (Dr ) retired a few years

ago. Now I'll have to find another one. Maybe I'll find one that's not

too old next time...

Did your sister-in-law have any luck getting on to Brett O'Donell? One

other avenue she could try is to ask for a recommendation (i.e.

who would he be passing his BPES patients to when he retires)? But also

see how Tang turns out - he might be pretty good, I haven't heard of him.

Sounds like they (the docs) are making a genuine effort to be helpful,

which is nice to see.

Hey all you beautiful people. Great news.

I did get hired at a computer monitor repair shop in Grove City called

Decision One. I had to take a substantial pay cut to do it but there

are advantages to taking this job. I'll know a whole lot more about

monitors and I'm sure it will lead to something else. Perhaps I'll

be back at OSU before long doing systems work again. That's my

goal. Thanks again everyone for all the energy you sent.
