When Noah had

his they had him fast after 8 P.M. the night before. He was scheduled at 11

a.m. and was not done until 1 or 2 p.m. The gastro that did it said that he

was sorry for making him fast that long because he did not realize that he

would be done so late. Noah was starving when he came out.

Hope it helps.

Subject: Prep for

ERCP?

Hi All,

Could someone tell me if you are supposed to fast

before an ERCP? and

how long before the procedure? I'm going to

have one tomorrow at 2:30

pm and the hosipatl said they would call me with directions

but they

haven't and I don't want to fast all evening if

it's not necesary.

I'll try the hosipital again, but I just got

caught up in their phone

tree. Sorry, that this may seem like a

quaint question for those of

you who have had a ton of these.

Thanks,

>Hi - I'm surprised your M.D didn't give you any info on this.

I had to fast the night before (my ERCP was in the early morning, so

it was no big deal to fast). If your appt. is at 2:30 I would think

you'd want to fast a minimun of 4 hours. There are plenty of other

members who have more experience on this and could give you more

accurate info. Good luck.

Hi ;

According to this article:

http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/ercp/index.htm

" Your stomach and duodenum must be empty for the procedure to be

accurate and safe. You will not be able to eat or drink anything after

midnight the night before the procedure, or for 6 to 8 hours

beforehand, depending on the time of your procedure. "

According to this article:

http://www.gicare.com/pated/epdgs20.htm

" The only preparation needed before an ERCP is to not eat or drink for

eight hours prior to the procedure. You may be asked to stop certain

medications such as aspirin before the procedure. Check with the

physician. "

- Others seem to have covered the fasting issue - What hospital

are you going to and is this your first ERCP?

One thing that I had trouble with was the Versed/fentanyl drugs for

sedation and pain. I took a long time to wake up/recover and the rest

of that day felt really anxious and feelings of despair like a drug

withdrawal. I couldn't focus at all on anything. Even for days/weeks

afterwards I still felt the effects. I had the same effects with the

same drug combination used in a colonoscopy.

My last ERCP to clear a blockage in August 05 and I strongly expressed

these concerns and they switched to propofol (same drug used for

complete sedation by anesthesiologists during surgeries - Just less)

The propofol was like night and day. The effects were gone within 1 hr

of waking up. This requires an anesthesiologist there so they had to

actually reschedule my ERCP because none were available the afternoon I

was in there.

Yes, you need to stop eating and drinking at midnight the night

before an ERCP. If you've had sedation before and had nausea

problems, you should remember to ask for anti-nausea medication.

(Some people do fine without it, but others have reactions to the

sedatives.) Since your ERCP is in the afternoon, if you have any

medications to take, you could have them in the morning with a sip

of water. At the very least, you want to stop drinking/eating 6

hours prior to the procedure. That was the protocol at all three

hospitals where I had the procedures done - Fairfax Hospital, Fair

Oaks Hospital, and town. (I had 11 ERCPs before liver-tx.)

I hope that you tolerate the procedure well and that the results are

good.

results will determine if I'll have sinus surgery.
