Guest guest
Syndi ~ I'm so sorry you're having a bad time! I've had trigger point injections for MPS twice, both over 12 years ago. I kept notes of all my doctor visits and medications, but of course I was doped up at the time, so they're slightly wacky: The first set of injections were Decadron. I'm not sure how many injections (maybe 5 or 6 or so?), but they were all in my right side of my neck and shoulder. This resulted in " pain, hysteria, & depression for 24 hours " . Immediately after the injection, I started shaking. By the time I managed to drive home (about 15 minutes), I was " dry-sobbing " -- no tears, but otherwise it was like I was crying hysterically -- and that state lasted for hours. No swollen lumps like you described, but OMG the pain-pain-PAIN!!! Sharp, shooty, stabby, electrical pain, and not just in the injection sites, but in the " referred pain " patterns typical of trigger points. After the side effects/trauma of the injections wore off (shudder), my FM/MPS pain nearly vanished for a couple of weeks, and then slowly came back. The second episode of trigger point injections came a few months later. This time, my doctor used Torodal. I'm not sure how many injections or if they were in the same trigger points, but according to my notes, I had no " hysteria, but not much effect on pain. " Yeah, *that* was worthwhile. I have also had several non-fibro-related experiences with depo-medrol injections a few years ago. These consisted of a single injection each time, given with the goal of reducing a mysterious inflammation on my foot (which actually turned out to be a bone spur, only it was made out of cartilage, so it didn’t appear on x-rays). They hurt, but no more than I would expect for an injection into my foot. No idea if they caused any swelling, since the area was already swollen -- there wasn't much at any rate. I don't know if any of this is useful to you. Reactions to treatment can be so individual. It's hard to guess whether you're having weird side effects from the medication, or if it's just the trauma of having 15 injections at once. Anyway, keep us posted on how you're doing! Syndi > I am not certain if the injections I had back in 1995 were trigger point injections or not, they were done on an outpatient basis by the pain doctor whom I did not realize was actually an anesthesiogist (sp), anyway, I had woke up that morning with one of the worst flares that I had had in years --- triggered by my m-i-l in just 3 hours the previous night. I knew we would be spending another 5 or 6 days with her and I had to DO SOMETHING. So, fortunately, they had an open operating theater and the doc was there so they told me to come in. I had no idea what was going to happen -- I was given a local and the doc injected me in about 5 places in my sterum. There was at least one more spot that I could have let him inject but the last one had really hurt and, since he had said I could tell him when to stop so I did. I do not remember having any problems once the general they had given me before he did the injections; but I do know that I was able to spend the next 6 days or so with my m-i-l who can trigger a flare in no time. And I will also say that when we move in June, I plan to check around for another pain specialize, especially as my m-i-l will be about a 5 hour drive from us by then and I know that she can set off a flare even when I speak to her on the phone! Strange the things that can cause a flare!

I did have my seat belt on yet i still hit the dash with my forehead, slammed the right side of my head on the passenger window and was jerked something awful! I went by ambulance to the hospital and ended up with whiplash, cracked off teeth, lumps on my head and my neck popped so badly! I knew i was in trouble as soon as we got hit!! I have had mri's,ct scans,x-rays etc. I follwed up with my neurologist a couple times and had to go back in to see her yesterday because the pain is excruciating!! Over the years the doctors have wanted me to try trigger point injections but i was so scared to have them for fear something would go wrong! I hated the idea of having needles stuck into the back of my head and neck! I decided i had no other choice so yesterday we did the trigger point injections into the occipital area of my head, down both sides of my neck, the back of my neck and all across and into my shoulders. She injected me 15 times!!! OMG....i thought my pain was excruciating b/4 and now i cannot even put my shirt on or lay down or have anything touch the back of my head, neck or shoulders!! I called the doctor ans she said to take 6 vicodine extra strength a day and go back in to see her on monday. I have big swollen lumps on my neck and across my shoulders!! My whole body is throbbing even my face! This is rediculous and all i can do is cry!!!! I hurt soooo bad!!! Has anyone had any experience with the trigger point injections?? Have they helped?? Did you hurt worse after them?? How many did you have at a time?? What did they use to inject you?? I was injected with 40mg of depo-medrol mixed with .25% of marcaine. I take alot of different meds for pain yet nothing is helping at all!!!!! HELP PLEASE!!!!!!! Syndi --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Guest guest
I'm behind in reading this, but if it were me, I'd probably go to the ER. It sounds like some kind of allergic reaction maybe. I have no experience with the injections, though, so I'm not really sure. I will pray you get some relief.
