Thank you for your Compassion:Myanmar UpdateCelebration Video On May 2nd, a massive cyclone struck the coast of Burma. The impoverished and vulnerable Burmese people were not warned by their military rulers. As a wall of water swept the low lands of the country, as many as 100,000 were killed and 2 million more lost their homes. The survivors continue to face hunger, lack of medical care, and the threat of epidemic and deadly disease. Humanity Healing has been working to raise awareness for the International Burmese Monks Association through our website and networking sites and funds for the Relief Effort through Avaaz. The monks are the fastest way to bypass the military junta and get aid directly to the victims through their existing network. So far, over $2,000,000 USD have been raised! The International Burmese Monks Organization, including many leaders of the democracy protests last fall, launched a new effort to provide relief through Burma's powerful grass roots network of monasteriesâ€"the most trusted institutions in the country and currently the only source of housing and support in many devastated communities. The International Burmese Monks Organization will send money directly to each monastery through their own networks, bypassing regime controls. The UN estimates that less than half of the 2.4 million people victimized by the storm have received emergency assistance.
