Guest guest
I take Lyrica. The thing it has helped with the most was the neck and shoulder pain I've had for 30 years. As far as the other pain; I don't see that its helped that much. However, I'll keep taking it because it eliminated the worst of my pain for the first time. I think my fibro is still giving me the worst of my symptoms these days. It's difficult to tell between Lupus and fibro especially since my pain and fatigue have been consistent for 3 years. I think my Lupus is relatively quiet and the fibro is kicking my butt. I'm not even convinced I know everything that's wrong with me yet. Anyone feel like that? I was reading about the Lyrica and I was on it but I stopped taking it because it was costing me $65 for a 30 day supply. If you go the Phizer site you will see what it is used for and they just started using it for Fibro last year, thats why I dont like that commercial. Guest guest
Angie, I agree about the lyrcia. For those of us it helps it is wonderful. The fact that scientists were not looking for a medication for fibro is besides the point. Many medications are found to work for things other than what they were orinigannally designed for. People now take a baby asprin to prevent heart attacks. That is not what it was initally rx for. I don't think we should not use it because it is for pain. Coming up with meds for a disease that they don't know what the cause is is very difficult. They are coming up with meds thattreat symptoms. If people disagree with taking meds that were not designed or approved for fibro they would only take lyrica as so far it is the only one for fibro at this time. Personally I'll keep all the meds the drs rx for me for my symptoms as some relief is better than no relief. JudyMer ---- Angie wrote: > I take Lyrica. Guest guest
I have to agree with yu Angie. I have this darn Crohns and multiple post traumatic pains from my fractured shoulder and arm and neck. then came the pain in my hip. turns out to have a osteophyte right in the femeral groin area. I just started the Lyrica and Lexapro a few months. the tramadol i have been taking for almost a year, and the flexril for more than ten years. I just suppose the media attempts to diagnose people and they should leave it to those who really know what and who they are. Sort of like engineers vs doctors. nurses vs paramedic's. painter vs photograhpogy. Diane --- Angie wrote: > I take Lyrica. Guest guest
Lupus patients take Plaquenil. It was originally developed to combat Malaria. It is one of the most important drugs a Lupus patient takes, it slows down the immune system so that it doesn't attack itself as much. For those that don't know, Lupus is when your own immune system attacks your whole body. There are no drugs for Lupus. So all the prednisone, Ultram and dozens of other drugs commonly prescribed to people with Lupus were all intended for other things. I don't see that as an argument for or against taking a drug. Alot of things are initially developed for one thing but wind up being useful in other thing. Lupus has been around since the mid 1800's yet they've never developed a medication for it. It used to be an automatic death sentence; but now it can be managed relatively well in most cases. Where would we be if we never took a medication not specifically developed for Lupus??? Guest guest
As a society we are addicted to meds the 3 leading causes of hearing impairment is not OLD people, is aspirin, lasix (for your kidneys and heart) and anything ending in mycin (its an antibiotic). We always think that with old age comes hearing loss but in actual fact its the drugs. Side effects are a bi*ch. Re: We need to take a stand.... Guest guest
You are so right. I was really trying to make the point that the public seems to think Lyrica is strictly a fibro drug. That is why they are knocking it so hard. But yes, I am so thankful for any medication that helps any chronic illness no matter what it was created for in the beginning. hugs, Debra V. Guest guest
well we all know the public only hears what they want to hear, and the media only shows a minute or two to get a message accross. only those who are in direct connection to something that truly understand. ot. my dad is still POW MIA from Vietnam. 2 years ago MSNBC aired a segment of an excavtion being done in Vietnam showing how our teams look for our MIA's who are unaccounted for. I saw the airing and with in seconds knew they were speaking of my father's case. Did MSNBC call me the primary next of kin... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo. I blew in them like the next hurricane. Anybody who can, listen to that program on NPR that someone posted the link. It was excellent. I wish you could have heard the one doc's response to Berenson, when Berenson was whining about all the side effects that Lyrica has. The doctor said, in effect, that you don't tell a person with cancer to not get chemo because it has side effects! I was greatly encouraged by that program. There are many doctors out there who are working on and researching this disease. The two docs on that program calmly sat and shot down Berenson's points one after another. He complained that they don't even know how Lyrica works. The docs sat there and explained how it works. I wish you could hear how disparagingly Berenson spoke of overweight middle aged women. The implication is that we (said OMAWs) can't be trusted, and are just using up medical resources. He said that people with fibromyalgia are going to the doctor so much and using the health care system disproportionately. Well DUH! Did it ever occur to them that when you're in pain a lot, you go to the doctor a lot hoping to get some help?!? The two docs, and the woman from the Fibromyalgia Association, made him look like the hack that he is. Here's the link. It's a 50 minute program. Well worth the time. http://wamu.org/programs/dr/08/01/15.php#18786 Z
Guest guest
My personal opinion about the whole lyrica uproar. Since the commercial started airing in Nov. and I was officially dx in early Dec., it has made a difference in how my hubby and family, some friends, preceive this monster. It made it much more real for them and my having it. Doesn't the commercial say it has been approved for the treatment of fibro? Not made for. I have also been taking Requip for restless legs for years, that commercial also started airing sometime last year. The drug is for Parkinsons. But hey, it has stopped my legs from kicking all night. I'm presently not taking lyrica, but I would give it a try. It seems it has helped many in the group. And I think the commercial that has aired has given us all more hope in being understood and that it is a real disabiling disease. Judy / WI Angie wrote: Lupus patients take Plaquenil. Guest guest
Yep Judy, I am a newly diagnosed fibro patient. and was told by my internist back in August 07 i was tired and overwelmed from the pain in my hip . I had been to 3 ortho doctors and told yep you have degenerative joint and OA . and if you were older we would do a hip replacement. I have Multiple chemical/medication allergies. and told them i was also allergic to lidocaine's (caines). which they finally agree to me on after i was given a synthetic local while have a MRI under floroscopy, my b/p dropped to 70/58, pulse went to 200, and i tunneled and thought i was screaming at them. to shorten the saga. i told my pc look. something is wrong, i should not hurt all over, and i don't feel right. she sent me to the rheumy doc. and she put me on Lexapro and sent me to be also checked out by the neuro guys' and they are the ones who said Lyrica try. I have had one increase and actually can say even though i hurt, there are certain parts of my body that has lessened in pain and what i call muscle lumps. lyrica given first for diabetic neuropathy pain. i have taken, up to 1500mg of neurontin for spasms and never got drowsey. topomax up to 300 mg 2x a day and never got even drowsey either. antiseizure meds to stop the signals between nerve and muscles they said.. oh they even tried botox in the back and shoulders. lol. they just need to keep using it for aging.
