Thanks alot . No, I have not gotten that far yet with the physician

testing. I will see how he does in special ed. They say it is symptoms of an

Autism Spectrum Disorder .... then it say " likely a pervasive developmental

disorder NOS rather than autism " . Goodness all this psych stuff is confusing.

LOL.

Thanks sweetie for all your support.

love and hugs,

Hi Debra,

Have you had a doctor test him? My neice has a son with autisim but he has a

severe case. Do they have special dr.'s for these children? Please keep me

informed as I would like to help you in any way I can.

I'm sure he will qualify for social security and medicare. The dr. will provide

the needed information..

Hugs to you.

These diagnosis are all different. lay people dont know it but Medicine is all

about the DSM IV book. If you tick enough boxes on one of the labels in the book

you have that syndrome. Austism has different boxes to PDD and so on. People

think that medicine is this fancy career in which Dr's just randomly guess and

its not, they have one book and every symptom is from the list in that one book.

Hi Debra, I try to stay very middle of the road in this group, because I

don't want to offend anyone. nor does anything I know or believe have much to do

with what goes on in this group. I think we are just here to support one another

anyway we know how, and be a cohesive group fighting a horrible monster,

fibromyalgia.

Here comes the But.

It has to do with your child being dx somewhere on the autism spectrum. And I

wanted you to know that there are a lot of caring, concerned, intelligent,

compassionate, knowledgeable doctors and other people who work with children and

adults who have a dx that fits somewhere on the Autism Spectrum. I have worked

with children and adults whose dx fits somewhere on the Autism Specturm and

their families and educators for over 30 years. And so I speak from experience

when I say that I have known many of those doctors and specialists who fit that

description.

Yes, just like with our disorder in which there are reactions or symptoms that

can be checked off of a list, there is a list of symptoms associated with Autism

or PDD NOS. With Fibromyalgia we have points on our body that react a certain

way when pressure is applied and a particular place or number of these places is

the main criteria for the dx of Fibromyalgia. When determining the dxof whether

or not to place someone on the Autism Spectrum there are diagnostic criteria

that are used to decide if and where to put that someone.

As an aside I want to say that the reason something is called a syndrome is

because it has a checklist of symptoms that are used to dx it, instead of say a

blood test or an X-Ray that definitively dx the illness. That is why

fibromyalgia is actually called a syndrome and why anything that fits on the

Spectrum of Autism is called a syndrome. If and when someone comes up with a

definitive way of dxing these illnesses that are now called syndromes, they will

no longer be called syndromes but diseases or illnesses.

Yes I do have a DSM-IV-TR and it lists symtoms for any illness or syndrome

that has a mental basis. Although Autism and it's cousins are developmental

conditions and not mental diseases, they are listed there too along with any

developmental disability. I have used this book countless times over the years.

It is " an " aide, but not the " only " aide. There are still observation, spending

time with and many other things that go into an evaluation.

I don't want to go any longer with this, but I want to reassure you that so

many things can be done to help any child with this dx. I also want to ask you

to e-mail me personally at martibowenboguski@... if you want to discuss

any of the many questions a parent usually has when confronted with this dx. I

do care and want to help in any way I can. If you e-mail me I can give you my

phone number and we can chat about it or anything else. My website is not

functioning right now so we would have to communicate this way for now.

Take care of yourself and know if you haven't run into a caring person to work

with yet, there are others who want to help and will. My son has Asperger's

Syndrome and in the beginning we didn't know how much he would be able to do or

if he would learn to drive or live by himself one day. He now lives in Boston

(I live in CT) and is a special ed teacher and is finishing his thesis for his

masters in special ed. So there are wondrous things that can be done.

I hope some of this helps relieve any stress you are feeling and gives you

hope for a good outcome.

Take care of yourself and let me know if I can help in any way.

If you get the chance go to one of Dr Attwood's conferences he tours the world

educating teachers and parents about autism his talks are very funny, very

cheap, he is a saint, he has a few books out, and I'm one of the the lucky one's

h'e's my kids personal Dr, he only takes a handful of kids per lifetime and well

if you need someone in your corner he;s your man.
