Guest guest
When this caused such an uproar on the 14th I also sent a reply Lori, and am hoping that many more people suffering from fibromyalgia do the same. Sad thing is, upon doing some research, it was not the only article this month talking in that same tone about fibromyalgia. And even worse, his article from the NY Times was picked up and ran in hundreds of newspapers across the country, not just in New York. I would suggest that in addition to writing the NY Times and Mr. Bereson there that you send him an email on his website. The NY Times website states that emails to the authors may be delayed when sent through the NY Times but I bet emails through his website he would receive immediately. Just a suggestion in case you wanted to send a message to the author and the editor of the paper. N.

Guest guest
Here is a copy of what I am working on to send to them. I am responding to the article published in the January 14, 2008 on page 1 of the New York Times about Fibromyalgia. I suffer from this disease and I was extremely dishearten by this article in the way that it tries to state that Fibromyalgia is not a real disease and that the drug companies are just looking to get rich from the sales of drugs for a non-existent disease. We are not just " chronic complainers " as was stated in the article. Many of us have white knuckled this disease for years trying to understand where the pain was coming from and trying to fix things in our lives to get better all the while getting worse and being ostracized from our family, friends and yes, sometimes even the medical community. I fought the increasing pain in my body for over 10 years. I worked and worked hard. The pain became increasingly worse. I took Ibuprofen like it was candy. I got to the point that I could no longer wear a normal pair of shoes. At home I can only wear soft memory foam slippers and when I am out I can only stand to wear Crocs on my feet. Anything else hurts as though someone was pounding my feet with a sledge hammer and that's on a good day!! I lose my balance, fall for unknown reasons, forget how to do simple tasks that I have done all of my life and all of this happened BEFORE taking Lyrica or other medications. I am in 100% agreement that drug companies are out to get rich, I don't like them any more than the next person but I can assure you that when there was a medication available to help me possibly go back to work and support my four children I was ecstatic and then found out that my insurance wouldn't cover it initially. They are now covering it for me and I have only begun taking the medication. I pray that I get some pain relief from a monstrous disease. Perhaps you and your writers should have done a little more investigating before announcing that Fibromyalgia is not a real disease. I suggest that you and your writers print an article about real fibromyalgia patients and their daily struggles. Learn about us before you also hide us in the closet and forget we exist because you don't understand what we go through. We are real people just like all of you. ~~~~~ _____ From: Fibromyalgia_Support_Group [mailto:Fibromyalgia_Support_Group ] On Behalf Of a Sent: Tuesday, January 29, 2008 11:03 PM To: Fibromyalgia_Support_Group Subject: Re: Fwd: Important Announcement This is fantastic! To ensure receipt of our e-mails, please add us (kthorson@...) to your address book.Dear Lori Hammer,New York Times writer Berenson bashes pharmaceutical companies on a regular basis. But on January 14, 2008 the Times took his distrust of the drug industry too far with an insane article titled: “Drug Approved. Is Disease Real?” It’s a tale about how Pfizer, Eli Lilly, and Forest Laboratories fabricated fibromyalgia so that they could make a fortune selling their drugs to patients who do not really have a disease at all—just problems adapting to the aches and pains of living! The article trampled the reputation of fibromyalgia patients, their doctors and scientists in the field. Berenson dredged up antiquated beliefs held by three die-hard doctors who truly believe millions of Americans are faking fibromyalgia. The stale theory that pain was not real unless it could be documented with a blood test or X-ray permeated the article. In response to Berenson’s front-page feature in the NY Times, Fibromyalgia Network solicited statements from researchers and physicians across the country. Visit our website to read what the experts have to say about fibromyalgia and share their comments with anyone who doubts that your symptoms are real. As for the editors at the NY Times, do not hesitate to voice your opinion and let them know that they flubbed up by attacking people with fibromyalgia, a real disease. Guest guest
Whats his website ? Re: Fwd: Important Announcement When this caused such an uproar on the 14th I also sent a reply Lori, and am hoping that many more people suffering from fibromyalgia do the same. N. 1. While it is wonderful to share our experiences with everyone on the list as to what treatments do and don't work for us, pls always check with your dr. Some treatments are dangerous when given along with other meds as well as to certain health conditions or just dangerous in general. 2. If you are in a difficult situation (doesn't matter what it is) pls don't be afraid to ask for help. It is the first step to trying to make that situation better. 3. To unsubscribe the e-mail is: Fibromyalgia_Support_Group-unsubscribe 4. Also, it is not uncommon for more than one member to be feeling bad at the same time when it comes to flares and b/c of that potentially take something another member says the wrong way. And that includes the things that one member may find funny (even if it's laughing at fibro itself) even though we who deal with illness whether one such as fibro or multiple illnesses try to keep a sense of humor. 5. Pls let's be gentle with each other, and if you are having a bad day pls let us know so that we can do our best to offer our support. Have a nice day everyone.
