Guest guest
Matija and others, Here's a little bit more information from a Begoun on AHAs. She cites a report by Dr. Walter that was published in the Costmetics and Toiletries Ingredient Resource Series. According to this report, the crucial evaluation factors are the percentage, type and pH of the AHA or BHA used. The effectiveness of AHAs/BHAs as exfoliants drops considerably as a product's pH level goes up and the concentration of AHA/BHA goes down. Apparently, there are a number of products on the market that don't contain enough AHA/BHA at the right pH level to exfoliate effectively and smooth the skin. a Begoun is concerned about consumers being misled into buying these products. From our point of view, however, this means there may be products out there that contain AHA/BHA but that wouldn't necessarily harm rosacean skin. Avon Anew, the product that burned Matija's skin, is DESIGNED to be an exfoliant, and it evidently contains enough AHA/BHA to do the job. The 5% threshold for AHAs I mentioned in my earlier email was just a's guideline for judging whether an AHA product is likely to be an effective exfoliant. BHAs, on the other hand, can exfoliate and irritate the skin in a 1% concentration--they aren't gentler than AHAs! BHAs do work differently, however, and may be useful for rosaceans who break out. In addition, many rosaceans find that their epidermal barrier is already compromised by the constant flushing and inflammation that accompany this disease. They may therefore react to all kinds of substances--including small amounts of AHA/BHA. My point is just that not all products that contain AHAs/BHAs are harmful. In fact, the water-binding properties of the lactic acid in the ZZ night cream appear to be very soothing to Angie and others. Jill
Guest guest
Hi Jill: Interesting to know that 5% AHA's can cause exfoliating and burn skin and I used 30%!!!!! My doctor seemed to feel this was ok. And when I told him I had all these side effects after the peel he said and I quote " that can't be from the peel " . I had welts the size of quarters and burning, itching, peeling for weeks and months. Strong AHA's can definitely burn! Yet I started using Oil of Olay daily renewal cream with BHA's and have not had any reaction. This has me stumped????? But that's ok can I do break out and I have found something I can use.
